Part 1 will be an extended response on The Skull Beneath the Skin and how this text relates and fits into the Crime Genre as a whole. You will be expected to refer to at least 2 other texts in your response. Marked out of 25 Part 2 will a creative writing task in response to a specific stimulus. The task will require to you use and extend upon the clue-puzzle sub genre. Marked out of 25

Outcomes to be assessed - the student should be able to: H1 - A student distinguishes and evaluates the values expressed through texts. H2 - A student explains different ways of valuing texts

EXTENSION ENGLISH HSC 2014 ASSESSMENT 1. The Skull Beneath the Skin Weighting: 15 total marks 50 Due Date: Friday, Week 2, Term 1 2014 Part I. 25 marks. In this question you will be marked on your ability to: apply the conventions of crime fiction to a text and evaluate the degree to which it conforms to these conventions. Identify the key values embodied in the set text including literary and social values. Demonstrate ability to engage in complex, mature discussion. a) Essay task: In the Crime Writing genre, it is more important to follow the conventions of a crime fiction sub-genre than to consciously create a piece of literature. Discuss. In your answer refer to The Skull Beneath the Skin and at least two texts of your own to support your thesis. 25 marks. Part 2; 25 Marks. In this question you will be marked on your ability to: Use stylistic devices suitable for audience and purpose and context. Demonstrate your knowledge of detectives in crime fiction. Write in two styles, journalistic and narrative

a) Imagine you are a journalist for a writers magazine called Crime Pays. This months issue focusses on the nature of the detective in crime fiction. Write a feature article on this topic. In your answer refer to at least three detectives in the crime fiction you have studied including Cordelia Grey in The Skull beneath the Skin. 10 marks. b) Write an original short story (2-3 pages in length) suitable for an adult audience, in which you introduce your own original detective, use the PD James technique of literary allusions, and present and solve a crime. You may choose to adapt a clue puzzle pattern or police procedural. 15 marks.
