Nursing Implications: Assess mental status prior to and periodically during therapy. Monitor BP and pulse prior to and frequently during the period of dosage adjustment. Observe patient carefully when administering medication, to ensure that medication is actually taken and not hoarded. Monitor I &O ratios and daily eight. Assess patient for signs and symptoms of dehydration. Monitor for development of neuroleptic malignant syndrome

Haloperidol Route Oral

Haldol

Haldol (haloperidol) is indicated for use in the treatment of schizophrenia.

0.5-5 mgs 2 or 3 times a day. In severe cases upto 100 mgs/day can be used. Parenteral

Clozapine is indicated for use in the treatment of schizophrenia. Action Binds to dopamine receptors in the CNS. Also has anticholinergic and alpha-adrenergic blocking activity . Produces fewer extrapyramidal reactions and less tardive dyskinesia than standard antipsychotics but carries high risk of hematologic abnormalities.

CNS: NEUROLEPTIC MALIGNANT SYNDROME, SEIZURES, dizziness, sedation. EENT: visual disturbances. CV: MYOCARDITIS, hypotension, tachycardia, ECG changes, hypertension. GI: constipation, abdominal discomfort, dry mouth, increased salivation, nausea, vomiting, weight gain. Derm: rash, sweating

CLOZARIL (clozapine) is contraindicated in patients with a previous hypersensitivity to clozapine or any other component of this drug, in patients with myeloproliferative disorders, uncontrolled epilepsy, paralytic ileus, or a history of As with more typical antipsychotic drugs, CLOZARIL is contraindicated in severe central nervous system depression or comatose.

Monitor patients mental status (orientation, mood, behavior) before and periodically during therapy. Monitor blood pressure (sitting, standing, lying) and pulse rate before and frequently during initial dose titration.
