La casa del bailarn is a beach house
desgined for Joaqun Corts, a renowned
Spanish dancer. Corts is a clasically trained
ballet and flamenco dancer known for his
sweeping arm movements and rhythmic feet
stomping.
The house is buried in the ground where
stairs lead users from the street to a board-
walk down at the beach. The stairs divide the
house in the two areas: private area
(bathroom, kitchen, bedroom) and public
area (dance studio). The roof undergoes an
undulating effect imitating Corts`s hand
movements in flamenco dance. Above the
studio, a "catwalk" balcony hangs overlook-
ing the beach's spectacular view.

The housing unit is spaced in a way that
adequate ventilation, sanitation and
comfort is allowed, and contact between
households is prevented as well due to
tuberculosis epidemic. The proposal is
based on Le Corbusier`s five points of
the new architecture. The fundamental
single family- unit is proposed as an L
shaped layout, combining six fundamen-
tal parts: main linving area incuding the
hall and dining area; a kitchen volume set
next to an outdoor deck to allow for
cooking on the outside; a corner unit to
house a master bedroom; the main
dormitories module, organized as a
sequential repetition of similar rooms;
and a service/circulation component for
the bathrooms and stairs onto the upper
deck. The L shape will yield a main
courtyard essential to promote the
benefits of integration between interior
and exterior.

Understanding the house composition as made out of a kit of parts, allows for the flexibility
combination needed to accommodate different family compositions. The resulting units will
have a compound profile and volume; so that when combined/grouped with other units (by
means of rotating and mirroring the basic unit), the resulting spaces will be formal and
defined in order to establish a sense of place and community.

The boutique hotel is located
in the high-end, tourist area of
Condado. The actual site is a
vacant, rectangular lot that
takes part in the urban fabric of
the exclusive beach sector. An
existing ten-story building that is
currently abandoned is restored
to be used as hotel rooms for
guests. The new program is an
add-on that compliments the
hotel service and ammenities. It
includes a gift shop, a
lounge/bar, administration area,
a restaurant, and three multi-
use activity salons. The project
corresponds to a design parti of
an open concept layout made
up of a two combining volumes:
a U-shaped volume overlapped
by an L-bar .

Design Year 2 & Structures 4
The project was further developed in
Structures 4 where we had to make a critical
analysis of its structure made up of concrete.
The idea was to first establish a firm under-
standing of the behavior of structural
concrete, then to develop proficiency in the
methods used in current design practice.
Computations of the basic mechanics of
structural concrete such as shear and torsion
were done and provided detailed drawings of
various types of structural systems, including
slabs , footings, foundations , and others.

Guido Moretti works with the transformation of geometrical
figures through the use of optical illusion. As the object
rotates in different angles, its perspective changes creating
the illusion of more figures and forms than they appear.
Mampara is a conceptual study of light and shadows with
an exploration of surface and form. The model is composed
by three independent figures that form one single object. As
light hits, Mampara creates an exquisite interplay of lights
and shadows that vary at every angle. Repetition is a key
element to the composition of this surface.

The Light Chapel
Design Year 2
of convergence of different types of
building: cultural, commercial and
residential. The city calls for a secular
space capable of emancipating
individuals from the quotidian hectic
urban realm and providing an
introspective place where inner self is
enhanced.
My intervention is a courtyard
building that hangs over a plaza. The
urban light chapel provides an
area where people of any religion,
belief, or idea may gather for physical
and emotional manifestations
allowing a syncretism of rituals.
This syncretic experience
is enhanced through the use of
natural light. Illumination is crucial
for meditation, peace for the mind,
spiritual tranquility and joy. Every
intention of defining spaces in the
celestial diamond is merged into
one that holds the key to freedom of
mind and spirit. The project is
intended to re-define spatially
the dichotomy between
profane,mundane and
the sacred.
The Light Chapel
Design Year 2
The triangular site provides a base for a floating diamond which contains the
sacred program of the building. Users ascend to a higher spiritual level as they
traverse through the building. The building program is distributed from the
most profane to the most sacred functions. This program consists of four
levels: administrative, educational, meditational and the spiritual, that relate to
a main urban plaza. The atrium defines the circulation inside the diamond and
allows visibility from the chapel down to the plaza. Each floor contains a
program that supports the function of the chapel, working as a vertical
transition.

The diamond shaped grid covering the main sacred space,
is used as a structural space frame that filters direct natural
light, creating a celestial experience in the chapel and other
levels. Five steel columns are located inside the atrium to
provide rigidity to this floating diamond. The diamond is
supported by two solid arms of concrete containing a cross
bracing steel system. The concrete arms are the most
important structural elements in the project for it is the
structural system from where the diamond supports itself
and presents the connection of both space frames.
The Light Chapel
Design Year 2
The space frame is made out of 3 inch steel pipes with bolted connections that
make a module measuring 3`x3`x1` repeated along the facades of the project. The
horizontal elements in the space frame are 1`x1/2" steel tubes that serve as connec-
tions with the floor systems. The floor systems are 3` wide on every level and are
composed of W24 I-beams every 25` with open web steel joist every 2`apart from
beam to beam along with its metal decks, air ducts, electrical and plumbing
systems, and a 4 inch concrete slab. The administrative and educational levels
including floor systems have a height of 12`, the physical level including floor
systems has a height of 15`, and the chapel has a maximum height of 35`.

SESC (Servio Social do Comrcio) is a non-profit institution in Brazil that
promotes culture and good-living to citizens. The idea is to target all age groups
in one space where they can enjoy sports, recreation, culture and educa-
tional activities. Families and friends have a variety of activities to choose from
such as exhibitions, concerts, seminars, debates and workshops. They as well
provide other services such as sports facilities, cafeteria and healthcare
treatment to its visitors.
SESC Repblica is one of many social services of commerce (SESC) located
in the heart of the city of Sao Paulo across Placa da Republica, a historical
revoltionary square. We proposed a subterranean connection between the nearest
metro station to the sport facilities level providing easy acces to subway commut-
ers. The building is a pure cube that contains a theater,restaurant/cafeteria, gym/
gymnastics, dental offices, library/bookstore, spa and many other areas open for
temporary uses.
The atrium acts as the protagonist of the project. It opens up , shifting
as you descend to upper levels looking up to a reflective pool located at the roof.

The water quality of the Cuyahoga River will improve
through the use of biopools. Therefore, the river is
extended along the sides of the bridge to make room
for the treatment areas. Biopools are artificial basins
filled with aquatic plants located near the edges of the
river or on the lower-level bridge as a landscape
element. The system is a low maintenance biological
treatment free from any chemicals. Phytodepuration
occurs when aquatic plants or macrophytes remove
pollutants from water through an oxidation depurative
system. This design intervention is proposing treated
water to return to the Cuyahoga River falling from the
edge of the bridge to the body of water as a waterfall
during warmer seasons and as fog during colder
seasons, creating a sublime experience for the
viewer.

Delavida Restobar is located between
Condado`s and Santurce`s border limit,
also known as Conturce. It is situated
in one of the most cultural and artsy hot
spots in town, la Placita de Santurce at
Calle Canals. The project is an interior
renovation of an existing two-story
Spanish colonial hacienda. The
challenge was to create a concept that
respected the property`s identity with a
modern twist. The design intent is to
provide a rustic atmosphere where
wood is given various treatments such
as a weathered look, walnut stained
color and a monochrome palette.
Delavida Restobar
Santurce, Puerto Rico
The first floor is divided in two main areas:
a restaurant in the interior and a
lounge/bar in the terrace. Both areas are
divided by transparent "wall" where
people are able to see inside/outside. The
restaurant sits 26 people with vinyl black
and white banquettes, off white walls
decorated with black and white photogra-
phy, and an orange cantaloupe acts as an
accent color in pillows and other details. A
monochrome "woodwall" pattern covers
almost an entire wall becoming an iconic
piece in the design. The space is dim lit
with vintage carnival lights that are hung
from side to side. . The bar design is a set
of floating lit boxes that serve as a display
for the bottles. The interior and exterior
bars are a mirror of each other making a
"floating effect". The terrace's layout is to
create an open space plan that allows for
flexibilty and provide different experiences
for its clients.
