Bermans Bits
by Dave Berman
Incessantly scouring the uni-
verse (and my back yard) for
the weird, the wacky, and the
stupid so you dont have to.
Greetings, and Happy New
Day! (You have to be a more-
than-one-time reader to know
what that is.) Whats todays
resolution?
We are all born ignorant, but
one must work hard to remain
stupid. Ben Franklin. I just
heard on the news that there
may be a new trend showing
up in elementary and middle
schools snorting crushed
Smarties candy through a
Twizzler or straw. Does anyone
else see the irony there?
Smarties, get it?
In the same vein (sort of):
theres another new game out
there in which people ran-
domly try to knock down
unsuspecting passersby with
one punch. What does it say
about the character of the par-
ticipants who think such behav-
ior is okay? Or thieves? If peo-
ple really know the difference
between right and wrong, why
is there so much wrong? I
grieve for our future.
Theres a musical group called
Blind Lemon Cucumber. Its an
old-school follow-the-formula
name if I were to name a
group following the formula, it
might be Syphilitic Grapefruit
Zucchini. That concept is noth-
ing new, though. The following
have a formulaic theme in com-
mon: Fats Domino, Chubby
Checker, and Tubby Chess.
Think I could make it with a
name like Portly Pictionary? I
didnt think so....
So. when we elect someone,
does that person represent each
of us individually or the broad-
er views of the party?
Depending on the issue, yes.
Then theres the meme on
Facebook about being a woman
who needs a real man to handle
her.... Handle her? Someone
needs to be handled? Red flag
there.
Random Thought: If trees could
scream would we still cut them
down? We might, if they did it
all the time for no good reason.
You know how some boys
give girls babies and then dis-
appear to leave the girl (and her
family) to raise the child. Could
there be a comparison made to
the government which disap-
pears after our soldiers become
veterans?
Serendipity: I have figured out
whats wrong with some people
who are described as having
strong personalities or an
attitude (bullies): You get
rejected enough, it makes you
bitter. Some people, they get
bitter, they take it out by being
cruel. Nothing but the Truth
John Lescroart (whose last
name is pronounced Less-
kwah should you wonder [I
d i d ] ) .
Random Thought: Rice is really
great if you want to eat 1,000 of
something.
Dont know about you, but I am
sick and tired of the periodic
battles between cable channels
and providers. Why cant con-
sumer pick and choose exactly
what cable channels they want
and pay appropriately... like
that will ever happen. We pay
for what they give us. (I am also
sick of the cold!)
Speaking of which, on TV as I
write this are shows like Farm
Kings, Duck Dynasty, Dukes of
Hazard, Worlds Dumbest
Thrillseekers, Keeping Up with
the Kardashians, Ax Men,
Gator Boys, Sister Wives, The
Real Housewives of Atlanta,
Prospectors, and Cook Your
Ass Off. If someone were to
judge our society based only on
those offerings, what conclu-
sion might they reach? (In all
fairness there were also shows
like Blood, Sweat, and Heels;
Couples Therapy; and Party
Down South. Yee-haw! No
wonder I watch repeats of
Criminal Minds and Law and
Order over and over.
Money! One young man came
up with an idea. According to
the Detroit Free Press, a
University of Michigan-Flint
student said he is hoping to
make some money toward pay-
ing off his student loans by sell-
ing ad space on his graduation
cap. Alex Benda said he split
the top of his 10-inch by 10-
inch graduation cap into 100
tiny squares, and he is hoping to
sell each square for $300 to
completely pay off his $30,000
student loan debt. You know,
maybe I could promote you and
your business here... in my col-
umn... for a fee. You know, I am
the second most-read column in
NH. (Whos first? Everyone
else.)
Finally, a quick question for
you, dear reader. Do you like
the cut and paste Bits (like the
last one) or the more personal
touch? Let me know. Thanks.
Later.

The Adventures
of Tom & Atticus
You can always follow and
keep tabs on Tom and Atticus
by visiting their blog regularly
at:
tomandatticus.blogspot.com.
Romance is about putting
things aright after some
tragedy has put them asunder. It
is about restoration of the right
relations among things and
going home is where that
restoration occurs because that
is where it matters most.
- A. Bartlett Giamatti
On a comfortable Monday,
under blue skies and a warming
sun, Atticus and I returned to
hiking for the first time in two
months. More importantly,
now that his chemotherapy
treatments are over, the after
effects are a distant memory,
and he has long-recovered from
the amputation of his cancerous
toe, our hike signaled a return
to our regular routine for the
first time in eight months. Yes,
we have hiked on occasion dur-
ing that span, but those treks
were rare. We did what we
could under the circumstances,
and the number of hikes dwin-
dled as treatments wore on.
The chemicals injected into
Atticuss arteries every four
weeks slowed him to the point
that we even ceased going on
our daily walks.
The last treatment took place on
December 13. At the start of
January Atticus had returned to
wanting not only to go for
walks, but he is back to going
on three walks a day. You
would never know anything
was different now, unless you
took the time to look at his paw
prints in the snow and noted the
missing toe. But well take life
without a toe, instead of life
without Atticus.
It felt right to hit the trails again
knowing we werent just
squeezing one in and hoping for
the best. We were starting over
again, hiking a simple loop trail
of 3.5 miles with 900 feet of
elevation gain, no longer
because I chose a hike Atticus
could hopefully tolerate while
going through chemotherapy.
This was more than that. It was
the beginning to a new chapter.
We have started out as any
beginner would, choosing the
right trail that would help with
our conditioning and lead to the
next step a more difficult trail.
I had a few trips in mind, and
we drove around finding one
where there were no cars at the
trailhead and settled on the
Boulder Loop Trail, just across
the closed covered bridge on
the eastern end of the
Kancamagus Highway.
Those 900 feet of elevation gain
are nothing compared to what
weve done in the past and
nothing compared to what well
soon be doing, but they were
just right for us on our return
hike. The elevation gain was
enough to tax us in a workout as
we climbed up the back and
forth trail and could feel our
heart and lungs exerting them-
selves more than theyve done
for quite some time.
After that first twisting uphills,
the weaving through large rocks
and dark pines, when we
stepped through a couple of
trees leading to a ledge and
were at our first viewpoint. We
stood on a sun-laden balcony of
rock and snow, took a deep
breath, and suddenly all felt
right with the world.
As any hiker and they will tell
you, the first view after a tough
climb gives you a reason to go
on. It reaffirms the journey and
feeds the hikers soul. Memory
is a potent thing. Your wrong-
doings, sorrows, and losses can
haunt you forever, but pleasant
memories are there to elevate
us. Over the past eight months,
I know that I have been using
our mountaintop memories as a
crutch to get through the diffi-
culties of a battle with cancer.
However, when we took in our
first view the other day, the
memory was nothing compared
to the real thing.
There was the winding
Kancamagus below us, while
above us and off in the distant
to the south stretched most of
the Sandwich Range. There
were many old friends:
Hedgehog and Potash, beyond
and above them were the
Tripyramids, Sleepers,
Whiteface, and Passaconaway.
Over to the southeast stood
Chocorua. Standing and taking
it all in after missing it for all
those months was like having a
family reunion. Up there is
where we are happiest; in lofty
places with views that have
always given us a kinship with
the great peaks of the White
Mountains, no matter how tall
they are.
After that first view, we hurried
from viewpoint to viewpoint
like two children running
through Disneyland on a day
when we had the park all to our-
selves. It was a moveable feast
(apologies to Hemingway) for
the eyes each time we turned a
corner, walked through a gate-
way of trees, and then moved
onto the next tier of open ledge.
The snow was in perfect condi-
tion. Others had been on the
trail and left a solid track, so
Atticus walked on top of the
crust, and my MicroSpikes
were the correct choice for trac-
tion on the ups and the downs.
As for those downs the reason
going clockwise on the Boulder
Loop Trail is nice is because it
makes for a gentle descent,
which was appreciated since we
hadnt been on any trail for so
long. Still, I could feel that
familiar tightness in my quadri-
ceps but it wasnt anything I
didnt expect, and even that
slight discomfort was washed
away when we glided through
the glades of beech trees.
Against the blue sky and white
snow, the sharp beech leaves
that hold on through the winter
greeted us. They shimmered in
breezes so faint I could not feel
them, and the bronze age of
color had left them and they
were turning soft gold. In
another few weeks, they will
become a ghostly, papery white
before letting go when spring
finally arrives.
I lay in bed that night and read.
Eventually though, I lay my
book down, stretched out with
the back of my head cradled by
my hands, and I smiled. I
closed my eyes, visited the loop
trail again, stopping at each of
the viewpoints, and even the
final meandering through the
boulder field, which is some-
thing right out of Tolkiens
Middle Earth and I turned to
Atticus who raised one expec-
tant eyebrow to me, and said,
Its good to be back home
again.

Crossroads Academy In Lyme, NH Receives $1 Million Grant For Endowment_______________________
On January 17, 2014, Jean
Behnke, Head of School,
announced that a longtime sup-
porter has made a $1 million
gift to Crossroads Academy.
The gift will support the
schools endowment for finan-
cial aid.
The announcement was made at
the schools annual assembly in
honor of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Through this gener-
ous gift and the ongoing sup-
port of this wonderful commu-
nity, said Behnke, we are on
our way to realizing one of our
dreams: providing financial aid
to all deserving students.
In his remarks, Board President
Sean Gorman reminded the
audience of the aspirations of
the founder of the school. At
Crossroads, students immerse
themselves not just in history,
literature, and science, but do so
through kindness, courage, and
generosity. The gift and its
contributor, he said, exemplify
these values.
About Crossroads Academy:
Crossroads Academy is com-
mitted to academic excellence
and moral integrity. It inspires
its students to love learning, act
honorably, and contribute
actively to intellectual, cultural,
and civic life.
Founded in 1991 by Mary Beth
Klee, Crossroads Academy is
an independent, coeducational
day school for students in
kindergarten through grade
eight. Crossroads Crossroads

philosophy as developed by

education program created by
its founder. According to Head
of School Jean Behnke, Our
practices and our campus sup-
port our engaging and experi-
enced faculty in delivering
these two programs to our stu-
dent body. Upon graduation,
our students attend the finest
public and private high schools
in New England.
In 2004, Crossroads was
accredited by the New England
Association of Schools and
Colleges (NEASC), whose vis-
iting committee noted,
Students at Crossroads

CHOPPER OVERHEAD
SIGNALS MOOSE STUDY
UNDERWAY IN
NORTHERN N.H.
Northern New Hampshire resi-
dents may see a helicopter over-
head as the New Hampshire
Fish and Game Department's
latest study of moose mortality
and productivity gets underway.
Fish and Game has contracted
with Aero Tech Inc. to collar
moose for the study. Activity
will be weather-dependent, but
could occur any time up to
about February 2, 2014.
During this time, residents may
notice a low-flying helicopter.
The collaring will take place in
Wildlife Management Unit C2
and the eastern side of WMUs
B and C1. The Aero Tech
wildlife crew will use net-guns
and tranquilizer darts to capture
the moose and collar them.
Residents with questions can
call Fish and Game's Wildlife
Division at 603-271-2461.
"We hope to find out if natural
mortality has increased since a
similar study was done about
ten years ago," explained
Kristine Rines, N.H. Fish and
Game's moose biologist. The
earlier New Hampshire moose
study took place from 2001-
2006. The current study will
span three years. Over a two-
year period, radio collars will
be placed on about 80 moose
cows and calves. A graduate
student from the University of
New Hampshire (UNH), which
is partnering with Fish and
Game in the study, will track
the moose.
The collared animals will be
tracked for four years and mon-
itored for as long as the collars
keep transmitting, said Rines.
"We'll look at how long the
individuals live; and when they
die, we'll try to get there as soon
as possible to determine cause
of death."
This current research effort is a
more directed study focused
primarily on mortality, accord-
ing to Rines. "It's clear that we
need to learn more about the
causes of moose mortality and
how our changing weather pat-
terns may be affecting both the
causes and rates of mortality in
our moose herd," she said.
Researchers will be looking
closely at whether the increase
in moose mortality and reduc-
tion in reproductive success in
New Hampshire is because of
winter tick, or if additional dis-
ease and parasite problems or
other causes of mortality are in
evidence.

The Warren School Board & Board or Selectmen
Well, it seem the Postal Service
is up to it once again. Both
nationally and locally!
As you may have noticed, as of
January 26th, your postage
went up yet again! This time, to
.49 for a first class stamp, and
from what we understand, other
items went up as well, including
PO Boxes located within the
post offices.
Here in Glencliff and Warren,
they are once again at it.
Starting around February 22nd,
Glencliff post office hours will
only be between 12-2pm. Thats
it! You got it. If you work and
need to mail something, good
luck!
To top it off, they will not do
rural delivery in Glencliff. They
are putting up cluster boxes at
the end of the driveway where
the post office is now located.
They are also charging people a
$6 deposit for a set of keys in
order to have the luxury of hav-
ing to travel to the PO, unlock
their boxes and get their mail!
My questions - when will the
mail get sorted and placed out
at the end of the driveway, and
if the person is out putting mail
in boxes at the end of the drive-
way and you need to mail a
package or purchase stamps,
does this person then have to
run back in to the office to do
that, then run back to the end of
the driveway to put mail in the
locked boxes? Now theres
something the Postal Service
has thought through!
Ialso wonder how the person
working at the Glencliff office
will enjoy being out there put-
ting mail in cluster boxes in
wind swept snow at 10 below.
Mind you, the Postal Service is
still paying for rent and heat in
the buildings they have,
whether there is someone in
them or not! So all they are
truly cutting, are a few hours of
the poor blue collar postal
worker.
Several of us in Glencliff and
Warren also use the Click and
Ship online USPS service to
ship out packages, yet, theres
no place to actually leave the
packages within the post offices
if there is no one working at the
time. So we can pay for the
service online, yet theres no
place to place the already paid
for packages, and unfortunate-
ly, if you are in Glencliff, you
dont have the option of having
them picked up by a rural deliv-
ery person, even through they
state you can call for a pick
up!!
Well, sounds to me that the
Postal Service is going back-
wards, both in time, and in the
services they actually provide.
It also sounds to me that they
should be cutting the fat off the
top instead of continually cut-
ting the poor working persons
hours. Yes, the ones that actual-
ly do the work.
But, my guess is, they will con-
tinue to cut services, go up on
their prices and eventually put
themselves out of business.
Then maybe some entity like
Fedex or UPS will take it over
and get it out of the control of
the government. Maybe then, it
will prove to be a lucrative
business with services that
arent continually being cut, yet
always going up in price.
Yes, some will say that today, it
is better than the Pony Express
and they are probably right,
however, back in the day of the
pony express, services got
added and got better with time,
certainly, not what it going on
with services today!
Nobody Asked,
Just My Opinion -BEF
Today I received a letter from
the U.S. Post Office telling me I
have to pay them a $3 per key
(for 2 keys) as a deposit to get
into my po box. If I dont, they
will return my mail to sender.
Thats called extortion.
Its not the price of $6, that isnt
much. The point is, I dont feel
that I should have to pay to get
my mail out of my post office
box, when they leave me no
other choice but to have a po
box, because they will not pro-
vide home delivery in our area.
This was the Post Office deci-
sion to provide cluster boxes
and not home delivery, also
their decision to change from
combination locks to keyed
locks and we have to pay for
that? Doesnt sound right to me.
At the meeting we had in town
with the post office personnel
about the possible closing of the
Glencliff Post Office, I asked
the question about home deliv-
ery. The post office people told
me that as long as there was a
house within a half mile of each
other and a place to turn
around at the end of the road
they would deliver the mail to
my home. All I would have to do
is put up a box. Well, I would
gladly put up a box in front of
my house, that I own and did
not have to drive to.
People who get home delivery
dont pay, nor do they have to
drive to the Post Office to get
their mail, so why are we being
singled out to pay for keys?
I told the post master of the
Rumney Post Office (whom
oversees the areas small
offices) that they should give us
the first set and if we lose them
we have to pay for replacement
keys, which I completely under-
stand. He told me that is the
way it was in Iowa? Im not
sure if he knows that this is NH.
If you live in Glencliff and dont
feel paying for the first set of
keys is right or fair, please con-
tact the Rumney Post Master,
Michael Renkert at 603-786-
9571.
As mentioned in the USPS let-
ter to Glencliff residents .
Maybe if enough of us do this
they will have no choice but to
provide the first keys free. If we
lose this battle maybe, Ill pay
six dollars in pennies to show
my frustration.
Thank you

Inspiring Words for You!
Dear Friends, God is our Hope! There are
scriptures to help you to understand that.
To read and remind ourselves, that our hope IS in
Him. Ps.62:5, Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my
hope comes from him. Ps.27:14, Let your hope be
in the Lord: take heart and be strong; yes, let your
hope be in the Lord. Ps.43:5, Why are you cast
down, O my soul? and why are you disturbed
within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him,
who is the health of my countenance, and my
God. Ps.130:7, O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with
the LORD there is unfailing love. His redemption
overflows. Ps.31:24, So be strong and courageous,
all you who put your hope in the LORD! And there
are so many more! You don't need to live without
hope! God is our hope. God bless you.

"Inspiring Healthy Choices For Life"
The Front
We have a natural desire I
believe to get to the front in
many aspects of our lives. The
front row, the front seat in the
car, the front of the class, so it is
with both skiing and riding we
should desire and aspire to get
to the front of our skis or board.
Not only will we be in the front
seat we will be in the drivers
seat!
Often in that world of Ski
Instructor Speak where the
more technical terms we can
blurt out the better, we talk
about a Functional Athletic
Stance and it is true that we do
have success in comparing the
optimal stance we have on our
skis to that same stance we
would take in other athletic
endeavors such as waiting for a
serve in tennis or defending a
goal in soccer. That stance is
one that has the ankles flexed
forward and puts us on the balls
of our feet , ready to move. The
issue is that for the most part,
we engage in these activities on
a fairly level surface that is free
of snow and we do not have
these long attachments on out
feet!
In order to duplicate this stance
on the incline of a ski hill we
have to over come our natural
reaction to revert to the prover-
bial Back Seat. I find most
often beginner skiers and many
novice and intermediate skiers
and riders tend to spend most of
their time over the back of their
skis and predominantly on the
heel of their foot. In this posi-
tion that may seem natural at
first carries our weight over the
tail of the ski. In simple terms,
we are too far back. Moving
our body mass forward does
take some doing, and at first it
does require a huge leap of
faith, it is similar to that same
leap of faith we made as young-
sters when we first learned to
balance on a bicycle. But once
we feel what control we get
from the front it will become
not only more desirable but also
much more comfortable. But
how to get there?
First lets keep reciting this sim-
ple phrase in our heads over and
over Front of the foot, Front of
the boot, Front of the ski. We
will know that we are closer to
the front of our foot when we
fell more pressure building up
near the ball of the foot. We can
realize the sensation of the front
of the boot when we are flexing
our ankles and feel constant
contact between our shins and
the tongue of the boot and the
payback will be we will start to
feel the front of our ski! There
are other ways of fine tuning
this stance as well. Moving
your hips forward enough so
that the strain is relieved from
your quads is a good indicator
we are in the front and keeping
our head up and eyes down the
hill will help enormously. So if
we want more control and want
to feel more comfortable. Lets
get to the front!
Saturday, February 8, Pot Luck,
Popcorn, and a Free Flick-
Open to the Public.
The Pot Luck Dinner will be
from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, then
there will be a Silent Movie at
6:15 PM. Classic Buster Keaton
comedies, Steamboat Bill Jr.
(1928) and Sherlock Jr.
(1924), rated G and Presented
by Campton Historical Society
and Campton Town Library
Taking his place to play the
score for two Buster Keaton
features, there's a reason
accompanist Jeff Rapsis will
have no sheet music on his key-
board. It's because he'll be mak-
ing up the music right there on
the spot. And it won't be rinky-
tink piano accompaniment.
Rapsis, a New Hampshire-
based musician and compos-
er,will use a digital synthesizer
to recreate the texture of the full
orchestra, complete with
pounding drums and clashing
cymbals, all produced in real
time by a traditional keyboard
with 88 keys. Read more at

Corporations vs. Health
Obamacare seems to be a varia-
tion on the general theme of cor-
porations mobilizing to control
our lives at the expense of our
health. How many examples do
we need to experience before we
wake up? Stress brought about
by corporate greed can lead to or
exacerbate just about any health
problem we have.
Despite the fact that single payer
health care has been found to be
more economical and reliable
elsewhere, it seems incredulous
that the US cant wise up and get
with the program instead of feed-
ing ever more corporate excess.
Locally, we can see corporate
power at work in the attempts to
make big bucks off an above
ground energy transmission line
that would claim destruction of
forest lands, the threat of which
has already created a hornets
nest of family conflicts over
property values. All this for cor-
porate coffers when an economi-
cal underground line down exist-
ing state rights of way would
make the state the recipient for
the rent money and save the envi-
ronment. Australia reduced its
line maintenance by 80 percent
by undergrounding. That is
something to keep in mind when
we have power outages due to
downed lines during wind and
snow storms and hurricanes.
Corporations are also attacking
water. The presence of bottled
water at common meetings lets
us know corporations have mas-
saged people into buying what
they dont need through their
advertising. Coca Colas latest
scam is to discourage restaurants
from providing free water so that
people will spend more money to
have ANY liquids with a meal.
The change has nothing to do
with safety or digestion.
Contaminated water from chemi-
cal and oil spills is daily reported
in the US. Citizens are being
advised to accept changes in taste
and odor, which in turn ratchets
up the sale of bottled water by
corporations.
Everything is connected. More
trees mean more holding tanks
that purify natural water, more
places for people to relax and
coexist with other life forms,
more chances to see the stars at
night, and breathe in fresh oxy-
gen. Less overhead wire means
fewer accidents and ailments.
Corporations are blocking food
labeling that gives us the right to
know what we are eating. These
same corporations have already
polluted our land with toxic pes-
ticides and contaminated our
heirloom seeds with GMO cross
pollination. Big Ag corporations
want to deny us the ability to
choose what we eat. The White
House sports an organic garden
but supports Big Ag GMO foods
for the rest of us.
Significantly, Carl Gibson of
Reader Supported News (1-4-14)
reported that Monsanto, grower
of GM crops, and Pfizer, one of
the worlds largest pharmaceuti-
cal companies, have an insidious
relationship invested in growing
food that makes people sick
when they eat it, and selling sick
people the drugs to treat those
conditions.
Even more damaging is the
potential of the Trans Pacific
Partnership (TPP) to affect our
health. Weve seen the destruc-
tion NAFTA (North Atlantic Free
Trade Agreement) has wrought
on vanishing jobs outsourced to
foreign countries now housing
US companies. The TPP is even
more powerful, takes precedence
over our government and threat-
ens to send us spiraling down
further.
People are using less electricity,
conserving more, and tapping
into renewable energy, in spite of
corporate massages. These are
positive steps. However, we also
need to take it to the next level
and stop the
TransPacificPartnership (TPP),
which gives corporations even
more power worldwide. We
need to contact our US
R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s
(www.house.gov) and Senators
(www.senate.gov) and ask them
to vote NO on presidential fast
tracking and the TPP.

Transformation
Shake-shake-shake-shake-shake.
Switch hands. Shake-shake-
shake. Shake-shake-shake-
shake. For ten, fifteen, some-
times twenty minutes or more I
slowly pace about our tiny cabin
floor with an unusual sort of
maraca in my hand: a pint-sized
ball jar filled with cream. I am
making butter.
Once a week we pick-up raw
cows milk from a neighbor in
Plymouth. Shes local, with just
a few cows and goats in her barn.
With access to pasture, and plen-
ty of personal care, these animals
and their milk feel like a great
choice. And drinking the milk
raw, with neither pasteurization
nor homogenization, leaves the
milk healthy and full of natural
enzymes. Not to mention the
good taste. And, our quart of
milk is topped off with an inch or
two of thick cream.
Now, Im not much of a dairy
lover, but Ryan enjoys milk in his
coffee, and Ill often create
casseroles, mashed potatoes, or
sauces making use of the extra
milk. We use butter only occa-
sionally, but it suddenly dawned
on me a few months ago: we use
so little, surely I could make our
own from the cream!
So since then, when we bring
home our fresh milk for the
week, I scoop the cream off the
top and into another ball jar.
From there, its a simple matter
of shaking the liquid into a solid.
Interestingly, the more cream
you have in your jar, the easier it
is to do this. Shake-shake-shake.
Shake-shake-shake. The cream
thickens first into whipped
cream, at which point it becomes
very hard to shake. Keep going,
though, and the milk solids begin
to settle out and clump together.
Lumpy milk becomes a nugget
of butter in whey. I store the but-
ter for us, and give the whey to
Mica as a treat. Hes certainly a
fan of this process.
In the beginning, I lightly salted
the butter, thinking that this was
what I should be doing to pre-
serve it. But Ive since ceased,
finding that the cool winter tem-
peratures lurking behind our
kitchen shelves offer more than
sufficient preservation for a few
weeks time.
So, thanks to Clare and her cows,
heres to a few buttery meals and
the satisfaction of creating anoth-
er detail of our lives by hand, at
home, ourselves.

Dear EarthTalk: Will I really be
able to save money and energy in
the long run by shelling out hun-
dreds of dollars now for a so-
called smart thermostat?
-- Bill Cone, Aptos, CA
Spending $200 or more to
replace that older, still function-
ing thermostat with a new whiz-
bang smart variety might seem
like a waste of money, but it can
be one of the best small invest-
ments a homeowner can make,
given the potential for energy and
cost savings down the line.
The coolest of the bunch of new
smart thermostats, the Nest, was
created by former Apple employ-
ees who had been instrumental in
designing the original iPod and
iPhone years earlier. This simple
looking round thermostat is rem-
iniscent of old-school thermo-
stats that one would manually
adjust by turning the temperature
dial. But the auto-awake feature
that turns on the bright blue digi-
tal display when someone walks
nearby gives the Nest away as an
ultra-modern piece of high tech
gadgetry.
The Nests software learns the
habits in a given space by log-
ging when inhabitants tend to be
home and awake and noting
when they tend to turn up or
down the heatand then sets a
heating/cooling schedule accord-
ingly. Owners can also program
the Nest, which connects to the
Internet via Wi-Fi, to heat up or
cool down the house at a set
schedule or go into away mode
from any web browser or smart
phone.
While the Nest is likely the best
known smart thermostat avail-
ableespecially since Google
acquired the company behind it
in early 2014several other
manufacturers (including
Honeywell, ecobee, Hunter,
Radio Thermostat, Trane and
Lux) have Wi-Fi-enabled smart
thermostats available now as
well.
While only some of them have
the auto-sensing and learning
capabilities of the Nest, those
without that feature also cost
less. And merely programming in
a weekly schedule to any smart
thermostat will be the main
source of cost and energy sav-
ings. People who were diligent
about turning their old thermo-
stats up and down throughout the
day might not see any substantial
savings with a smart thermostat,
but most of us arent so dili-
gentespecially when it comes
to turning the heat down at night
when we are sleeping.
Many smart thermostat owners
report savings of between $10
and $30 per month on their heat-
ing/cooling billsand research
has shown that such an upgrade
can save upwards of 10 percent
of the total energy consumed by a
given household. Smart thermo-
stats range in price from $50 to
$250, so upgrading could pay for
itself within a year or two at
most, with long-term savings
racking up month-by-month after
that.
Many utilities now offer free or
discounted smart thermostats to
customers. Getting in on such a
program is a great way to reduce
energy costs without the up-front
expense of installing a smart
thermostat independently.
According to the Database of
State Incentives for Renewables
and Efficiency (DSIRE), incen-
tives to install smart thermostats
are available through utilities in
45 states. New Yorks Con
Edison, Californias PG&E and
Texas CPS Energy are just a few
of the larger utilities offering
such incentives.
Those that do upgrade certainly
wont be alone. Navigant
Research reports that the number
of smart thermostats in operation
around the world will jump from
1.4 million currently installed to
some 32 million by 2020. These
kinds of numbers will help utili-
ties meet or exceed energy effi-
ciency goals regardless of other
upgrades on the power plant side
of their businesses. Likewise, the
efficiency boost also can play a
key role in reducing our reliance
on fossil fuels and our emissions
of greenhouse gases.

This is part 2 of a two part
series of what you can do when
support rnds for Windows XP
this coming April.
For email and Internet, go with
a modern device
The non-Microsoft devices have
their own limitations. For exam-
ple, a Chromebook works nicely
for heavy Google Apps and/or
Gmail use, but it cant directly
access your shared Windows
files; it can access only Web-
based content (such as Google
Apps).
The Kindle Fire is an inexpensive
device from Amazon. The less-
expensive models are subsidized
by advertising, but I dont find it
all that annoying. With the right
applications, you can access
shared files on your network and
complete most computing needs.
(The same is true for iPads and
Android tablets.)
Going Ubuntu could be the most
mind-boggling option. Although
Tek Talk...With Eli Heath
Of Paige Computer Services
Tech Tips, Talk & Advice For Your Computer
its graphics-based interface is
relatively intuitive, it doesnt
completely hide its Linux foun-
dations. So your learning curve
will be a bit more intimidating
than with the other devices from
Google, Amazon, Apple, and
Microsoft.
Bottom line: Keep XP only for
those tasks than wont run on a
more modern platform.
Give your aging Windows XP
system some new life
Hardware upgrades can extend
the life of older systems. For
example, install a solid-state
drive (SSD). On older machines,
the trick is finding the right type
of drive connector. Most SSD
drives use SATA, not the older
IDE. But with a bit of searching,
I found an IDE SSD for an aging
laptop.
Make a backup image of your
existing drive and install the
image on the new SSD that
could give a sluggish XP system
renewed vigor. (This also works
nicely on older Windows 7
machines.) If the system is run-
ning out of space and a new SSD
drive wont fly, consider upgrad-
ing to a larger traditional drive,
one last time. (I find upgrading to
a larger hard drive easier and
safer than attempting to clean out
old system files.)
Over the years, applications
havent gotten any smaller or
more efficient. Upgrading RAM
is another relatively inexpensive
and painless improvement for XP
systems. Crucials website has a
tool that scans a PCs memory
and hard drive, then suggests
upgrades.
(While youre at it, check
whether your XP system has an
svchost overrun, as reported in
the Dec. 12 Patch Watch column
[paid content]. Some XP users
have solved the problem by man-
ually installing the latest IE secu-
rity updates.)
At this stage in XPs life, I dont
recommend video upgrades
because its hard to find cards
compatible with older bus slots.
On the other hand, feel free to
buy a larger monitor itll be
one less item to purchase when
you eventually move to a newer
PC.
It all comes down to embracing
change
As I said at the top, all good
things must come to an end.
Those of us who grew comfort-
able with Windows 98 were
reluctant to move to Windows
XP. Many XP users were or
still are reluctant to upgrade to
Windows 7 (Vista users: not so
much). Windows 7 has quickly
become the workhorse operating
system for many PC users, who
see no compelling reason to
move over to Windows 8. (You
can still purchase a new Win7
system, but probably for not
much longer.) The simple rule:
When Microsoft ends support for
a product, its probably past time
to give it up. And thats where we
stand today with XP.
