Fleischmanns Forum
Utilizing Local Resources as an Alternative Energy Source
On February 1 at 10am , following the Fleischmanns First monthly meeting, Jim Waters, Executive Director of the Catskill Forest Association, will present the outcomes of the feasibility study conducted by a consultant firm, BERC (Biomass Energy Resource Center), and funded by DEP and US Department of Energy. The study regarding a woody biomass heating system for our community was begun in 2012 and completed in 2013. The issues are compelling from an environmental point of view as well as fiscally. In Governor Cuomos State of the State Address earlier this month, he highlighted the need for cleaner communities and announced his Renewable Heat NY program. Jim will discuss how the proposed biomass project for Fleischmanns would target the Governors goals and he will explore all of the relevant criteria of the project in a 30 minute presentation and then take questions from the audience. Join us for this enlightening presentation!

Fleischmanns First Announces Assistance Application

Over the last few years, Fleischmanns First has held several fundraising events; the annual adults Howl ween Party, House Tours, the annual Maple Bake off Caf and Maple Pancake Breakfast and this years Pumpkin Festival. The funds raised have been used to support other Fleischmanns First sponsored activities such as the Childrens Howlween party, the Memorial Day event and, in addition, Fleischmanns First has supported other initiatives, events and other Fleischmanns organizations programs such as The Food Pantry, the Village Historic Marker, Fleischmanns Community Garden, Skene Memorial Library programs and the Childrens Holiday Party. To improve planning and to further our reach for the year 2014, we are inviting Fleischmanns organizations to apply for support through an assistance program for financial and human resources. The Leadership Committee will review all applications with regard to feasibility and in keeping with our Mission. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and are available at www.fleischmannsny.com. We are hoping to support programs that will enhance the 12430 community and bring more visitors to the Village. Please contact Michelle Sidrane for any questions or for further information.

In 2014 the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories will present a display of Fleischmanns Then & Now images; readers of the Fleischmanns Flyer will get a sneak peek each month. In 1907, the stream coming down from Halcott was dammed, and Lake Switzerland was created. It quickly became the focus of recreation for residents, and guests of the many hotels. This post card image dates from around 1910. In 2003, the state had the dam taken down, over supposed safety concerns. Today, there is just a meadow (with trees growing already) where the lake stood for 96 years.

Notes from Skene Memorial Library For a number of years now, Skene Library has been hosting an active book discussion group, which meets monthly on the third Thursday of the month, at 11 AM at Skene. (There is NO January meeting.) The selected book for February 20 is Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. For March 20, the work to be discussed will be The Road by Cormac McCarthy. A New Tradition...

Fleischmanns Christmas Caroling 12/21/13 Six hardy souls caroled in the rain. Eight, including the horses! It was fun, we got wet, but we had a lovely time and enjoyed cookies and hot chocolate afterwards. Big thanks to Seth and Alisha Finch for donating the horse drawn wagon. Next year, it will be bigger and better! And drier. Happy Holidays!

Santa and his elves made for a happy time at the 2013 Fleischmanns Holiday party!

Save the Date..2014 Maple Festival

March 21, 22, 23 will mark Fleischmanns Firsts third annual Maple Festival. The weekend begins with the crowning of the Maple royalty. Last year, we were pleased to have a prince as well as a flock of princesses. We are hoping for more princes and princesses to be crowned on Friday afternoon on the steps of the Skene Library, weather permitting! Saturday, from 4-6pm the Maple Bake Off Caf returns to Main Street. Folks are already clamoring to be judges, and bakers are testing away their new maple infused recipes. Ate O Ate will return and also offer maple inspired goodies. The Pine Hill/Fleischmanns Rotary will be dishing out that fabulous maple walnut ice cream! Coffee, tea and punch will be served. The Maple Pancake Breakfast, a joint effort with the Fleischmanns Community Church, will begin at 8am and last until 11am. New to the menu this year will be muffins laced with, you guessed it, maple flavor. So put the dates on your calendar and we hope to see you then!

Letter from Mayor Pascarella..

Dear Fleischmanns Community, Brrrrrrrrrrr! We have been experiencing some of the coldest weather we have seen in a long time, but life goes on in the mountains. As we cope with the cold, we are also constantly reminded that our local economy is in large part based on skiing which depends on it being cold in the winter so the frigid temps are something of a blessing in disguise. We must also remember that extreme cold can be very dangerous especially for the elderly so please check in with your neighbors periodically to make sure they are staying safe. Speaking of keeping warm, some folks have been asking about the biomass heating system that is being studied for feasibility in the Village. There are of course many questions when it comes to any proposal like this so we are preparing to do informational presentations on the subject and get feedback from the public. Stay tuned as we will announce these when the time has come. I want to take this opportunity to wish all happiness and prosperity in this New Year! Sincerely, Todd Pascarella, Mayor
