size 8 (6.5mm) double pointed needles
optional: 18" size 8 (6.5mm) circular needle
bulky yarn, about 600 yards/14 oz
1 soft foam ball about 3.5-4" in diameter, cut in half

Crochet hook, size K

Gauge:
4 sts, 6 rows/inch

Sizes:
Small/Youth: head 18-20 inches
Medium: head 20-22 inches, instructions in [].
Large: head 22+ inches, instructions in {}.

Cap:
Make a slip knot, KF,B&F in knot. Slide stitches to other
end of needle and KF&B in each stitch (6 sts). Divide
stitches onto three needles, join and work in rounds.
Round 1: KF&B in each stitch (12 sts)
Round 2 and all even rounds: Knit.
Round 3: *KF&B, K1 repeat from * across (18 sts)
Round 5: *KF&B, K2 repeat from * across (24 sts)

Rounds 2-72: Knit, stuffing tentacle as you go along.
Round 73: SSK, Knit across.
Round 74: Knit.
Repeat rounds 73 and 74 until 3 sts remain.
SSK, K, SSK. Cut yarn and thread through last loop.
Thread yarn end onto tapestry needle. Draw yarn up
through several inches of the tentacle, pulling gently
so the end of the tentacle curves. Secure end.
Repeat tentacle section 7 more times, using all cap
stitches.

Long tentacles:

From the inside of the hat behind the eye, pick up
9 [10] {11} stitches along a row, turn, pick up the
same number of stitches in the opposite direction.
Rounds 1-107: Knit, stuffing as you go.
Round 108: Knit to beginning of where you origi-
nally picked up stitches, PM, K9 [10] {11}, PM,
knit across
Round 109: Knit to first marker, slip marker,
K2tog, knit to next marker, slip marker, K2tog
Rounds 110-112: Knit.
Round 113:Knit to 2 sts before first marker, SSK,

insert ball halves and stuffing, thread a string through the hem and tighten to keep ball in place.
position eye between and just above two tentacles. With crochet hook On reverse, pull one loop through
the fabric of the hat. pull another loop through hat about 1/4" away, pull through first loop. Sew the
eyeball to the hat in this way, making a chain stitch on the inside.

Make another eye and attach to the other side.

Put 20 sts from one stitch holder on one dpn and the remaining 21 sts on another holder. Weave to-
gether, starting at outside corner. With the same piece of yarn sew the fin closed along the line of in-
creases. Repeat for other fin. Put hat portion on a headstand, if available. Stuff squid body and position
over cap with the point towards the front, equidistant from the eyes. The sides of the body should over-
lap the eyes a little. Sew in place, through inside layer of hem only to hide stitches.
