1. SERVICE IN SCHOOLS INITIATIVE Action required by November 6: schools

Last spring, the Chancellor announced that all schools are expected to participate in at least
one service or service-learning project in SY 09-10. As part of the new Service Initiative
section of the Consolidated Plan, which is due on November 6, schools will provide
information about their plans for service or service learning projects.

Your Network team is prepared to help your school plan their service projects.
Click here to learn more about the Service in Schools Initiative as well as organizations
interested in partnering with New York City schools on their service projects.

2. CAMPUS AUDIT TEMPLATE – Deadline extended to October 5: all schools
Network Leaders should work with their campus councils to ensure that each council
submits one Campus Audit Template by e-mailing it to their designated campus folder
address by October 5. D75 sites should collaborate on the template’s completion and agree
to as many council meetings as possible (no fewer than two per year).

When working with your Network Leaders on campus management issues, please emphasize
that they should be working to find the best solutions for ALL students on campus when
they are asked to participate in the second step of the arbitration process.

Direct questions to campus@schools.nyc.gov.

3. 09-10 GIFTED AND TALENTED TESTING Action required: elementary schools

G&T Handbooks will be delivered to all schools by October 13. Next week’s Principals’
Weekly will ask schools print and backpack a letter (posted to the Principals’ Portal)
notifying parents of the handbook’s availability and the 09-10 Request for Testing process.

Please review this detailed, updated information about 09-10 G&T testing, which will also be
included in next week’s Principals’ Weekly. E-mail the Accountability Service Desk with
questions.

4. COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATIONAL PLAN (CEP) Action required by October 15: schools

School Leadership Teams (SLT) should be updating their preliminary 09-10 CEP for
submission by October 15. Click here for the complete 09-10 CEP timeline. Additional
information and submission guidelines will be provided in the September 29 Principals’
Weekly. Schools should contact their School/District Improvement Liaison (SDIL) or the
Office of School Improvement directly at OSI@schools.nyc.gov.

CEP WRITING PREPARATION:

I wanted to share these exceptional offerings with you and your school communities. The
workshop offerings for Saturday, September 26th and Saturday, October 10th from 9 to
11 AM will give one to one support and assistance to teams that need help with preparing
their CEPs. These are school specific and will enable your team to think their work out with
exceptional assistance and guidance. Please see attached.
The mini conferences to be held on Wednesday, October 21, Thursday, November 19,
Thursday, December 17 and Wednesday, February 24, 2010 will give you support in
planning, data use and team development. This is a great lead and tie in to the new Quality
Review expectations.

5. ASSIGN DATA SPECIALIST Action required by October 2: schools

Over 150 schools have not yet assigned a data specialist. The deadline to do so is October
2. More information is available in this chart of assessment and accountability roles.

6. SPECIAL EDUCATION INTEGRATION SURVEY

Action required by October 30: schools with self-contained Special Education classes
The Special Education Integration Survey will be available on schools' ATS printers on

Building a Collaborative Community of Leaders 2

October 1. This survey collects information that enables us to track and report to SED on
the number of periods students in self-contained Special Education classes spend in general
education. Special Education teachers should complete the survey and a school-based staff
member should enter the data into ATS by October 30.

We will include completion reports in SSO Weekly beginning in mid-October. For more
information, please review these instructions for teachers or ATS data entry instructions.
Schools should contact Quin Werthauer if they have problems printing the report. Schools
should direct all other questions to their ISC/CFN Special Education liaison.

7. PRE-K DIAGNOSTIC SCREENING

Action required: elementary schools with UPK
All schools with a Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program (UPK) must screen all PreK students
using the Early Screening Inventory – Revised (ESI-R) Screening tool. Early Childhood
Borough Offices will host training sessions (register here) for PreK teachers on October 5,
2009. For additional information, please contact Nana Ofosu-Amaah or read these
Frequently Asked Questions.

8. REGENTS POLICY
Action required: schools
As schools appeal accountability decisions made last year, SED asks that all schools and
staff review the regents scoring policy and the finality of that process included on pages 13
-15 of the most recent Regents administration manual. We will include this request in the
next Principals’ Weekly.

9. PROPOSED ACCOUNTABILITY POLICY CHANGES TO by SED and USDOE

FYI
SED and the USDOE are expected to evaluate a number of proposed policy changes for the
09-10 SY. Schools will be informed through Principals’ Weekly as details become available.
Please encourage your schools stay updated by visiting the State and Federal Evaluation
intranet page for the latest news from SED and review the monthly meeting notes from the
Board of Regents. For further information, please contact the Accountability Service Desk.

delights of humor, even compassion, and creates a rich and wry reductio ad
absurdum."
