Experimental Methods in Bioengineering Winter 2014

SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY BIOENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Winter 2014
COURSE: Experimental Methods in Bioengineering/ BioE120 -4 units DATES: January 6 to March 14, 2014 LECTURE TIMES: MWF 9:15 AM-10:20 AM LECTURE ROOM: EC 305 INSTRUCTOR: Maryam Mobed-Miremadi EMAIL: mmobedmiremadi@scu.edu OFFICE: Bannan 324F OFFICE HOURS: Monday 15:30-17:30; Friday 13:15-14:15 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will cover the principles of data representation, analysis, and experimental designs in bioreactors, biomaterials, and medical devices. Topics include error analyses, modeling, Normality testing, hypothesis testing, and design of experiments. Special emphases will be placed on the interpretation of data from high-throughput assays used in "omics"/ tissue engineering, and formulation designs used for optimal drug delivery. Prerequisite: MATH 14 OBJECTIVES: The learning objectives for the course include the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Identify the sources of error in experimentation. Demonstrate the ability to model and interpret data using linear regression Demonstrate an understanding of how probability distributions can be used in statistical analysis. Associate types of mathematical data representation with the appropriate bioengineering phenomena represented. Use elementary design of experiments techniques to optimize the experimental range in biodevice, bioreactor and pharmaceutical formulations Demonstrate an understanding of statistical parameters and basic techniques used in quantitative analysis of high throughput assays. Demonstrate the ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the course to analyze data. Demonstrate the ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the course to design experiments.

GRADING APPROACH Each Midterm Final Examination Homework, Quizzes, Attendance & Class Participation

25% 40% 10%

All Course announcements will be posted on the Canvas (Camino) website make sure to forward your email appropriately. Homework will be handed out from time to time, and must be submitted on the due date. There will be "surprise quizzes" which will be given only at the beginning of class. No late assignments will be accepted.

EXAMINATION POLICY:
Failure to appear for an examination will result in a score of zero unless verifiable documentation of illness or extreme distress is provided, in which case an alternate examination will be given as soon as possible. No electronic devices including iPods and cell phones are permitted to be used during the examination with the sole exception of a calculator. DISABILITY ACCOMODATION POLICY: To request academic accommodations for a disability, students must contact Disability Resources located in the Drahmann Center in Benson, Room 214, (408) 5544111; TTY (408) 5545445. Students must provide documentation of a disability to Disability Resources prior to receiving accommodations. ENGINEERING HONOR CODE: All students taking courses in the School of Engineering agree individually and collectively that they will not give or receive unpermitted aid in examinations or other coursework that is to be used by the instructor as the basis of grading. Violations of the Honor Code will result in a failing grade. You may discuss your homework assignments with your classmates, but all written work that you submit must be your own. Evidence of copying another students homework assignment will result in a failing grade for the assignment. Two honor code violations in this course will result in a failing grade for the course.
