4. OpenSolaris vs Linux
Sun advertises its operating system as a fullblown distribution, including the Gnome desktop. But
is OpenSolaris interesting enough for a Linux user? If you're happy with your favourite Linux
distribution, why would you try OpenSolaris? In some aspects it's much like a regular Linux
distribution, but in other aspects it's completely different. Do the exciting features of this operating
system outweigh the trouble of learning another Unix environment with other tools?
Here is a review on OpenSolaris vs Linux.

Yet another major Ubuntu release is on the anvil. It is called Ubuntu 9.10 codenamed Karmic Koala.

a look at the list of changes with this new Karmic release.

9. IBM Throws Out Microsoft Office
360,000 IBM workers have been told to stop using Microsoft Office and switch to the Open Office
based software Symphony.
Quoting an inside source, the German economic newspaper, “Handelsblatt” reports that staff at IBM
have been given ten days to change to Symphony, IBM's inhouse Lotus software. The use of
Microsoft Office will in future require managerial approval. With immediate affect, the Open
Document Format (ODF) will rule at IBM with the file ending .doc soon belonging to the past.
Lotus Symphony is an office software that incorporates huge chunks of customized Open Office
without a databank module. The free software download provided by IBM is an attempt at luring
customers away from Microsoft. IBM's cooperation with Linux distributors like Red Hat, Canonical
and Novell was designed to strengthen the software's market chances.
IBM's management have obviously decided to practice what they preach. 330,000 IBM workers
already use Symphony, reports the newspaper. The motive for the migration appears not to be the
saving of license fees, and according to an IBM press officer, the move is a clear statement in
appreciation of open source standards

10. Saving a Billion Using Open Source
A leading bank in India saved Rs 100 crore by moving from MS Office to Open Office. It is simple
mathematics—if MS Office costs Rs 11,000 per user, and the organization has 1,00,000 desktops,
the company would save a cool Rs 110 crore on licensing costs if it moved to Open Office. Even if
we budget Rs 10 crore for training and support costs, the company would end up saving Rs 100
crore.
The table compares the licensing costs of commonly used applications. You can do the mathematics
on your own to see how much you can save.
