LETTER
from the team

Change is in the air

It was the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus who first said
that change is the only thing that stays constant in life. On the
surface, that statement seems easy enough to understand. Think
of the seasons: Fall gives way to winter; winter gives way to spring.
School lets out for summer; school starts up in fall. Things are
always changing, but we have our rituals and traditions associated
with different times of the year. Those things stay the same.
Or do they? Now that the holidays are over and the quiet of
winter has set in, we have time to reflect on the flurry of activ-
ity behind us. Against the backdrop of our yearly traditions, it’s
easy to see how this year has been different from those past. Loved
ones have gotten older. Some are no longer with us. Children have
grown. Friends have moved on. Some relationships have soured.
Others have strengthened. In so many ways, this year has been
unique. And next year, many of these things will have changed.
As much as we often want things to stay the same, nothing ever
does. While this thought might be bittersweet, it also lends a very
great importance to the present moment. What you have now you
won’t have forever. So if it’s good, we urge you to take the time to
appreciate it. Don’t put off the little things. If you have an old friend
you’ve been meaning to contact, do it now. If you have a relative in all of us can achieve it. Sam Kim shares tips on how we can stay

A little preventative care goes a long way for humans and turf, and
reduces need for medications or chemical interventions.
Remember, chemicals used outside the home inevitably end up
inside. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, research
your care program and products for nutrition and chemical
content. Consider what will benefit your type of turf, including
soil factors, moisture and sunlight.

perfection. A healthy lawn is often richer in color and density, but
an occasional weed or insect pest might occur. It will also have
beneficial insects and other organisms that help keep pests under
control. It can often take an entire season to see the desired, long-
lasting results.
Environmentally sensible lawn care can have a bigger impact
than you might think. Your lawn is only a small piece of land, but
lawns across the country cover a lot of ground. Your lawn care
activities, along with everyone else’s, make a huge impact on the
environment and all who live in it. Healthy lawns and a healthy
environment begin in our own backyards.

Couples in counseling are taught that there are always three people
in every relationship: two separate, independent individuals plus
the relationship itself. In order for the relationship to be healthy,
each partner has to be healthy.
But so often when we get involved in love relationships, the
opposite occurs. We are not healthy; we’ve accumulated a lot of
emotional baggage. We are human, and in being human, we are
sometimes tempted to look to others for happiness and joy before
we learn how to heal any past hurts or anything blocking us from
being emotionally healthy ourselves.

SELF-CONFIDENCE continued from page 35

Recognize authenticity.
While you might say you don’t care what others think, living
authentically is another matter. You can hide the truth from others,
but you can’t hide it from yourself. Learn to listen to your emotions.
Do you live for the occasional pat on the back from others or do
you live on your own self-approval? Do you need a relationship to
feel complete or do you walk your own path and let others come
along for the ride if they choose to?
No matter what you do, you will not please everyone, so you
might as well be yourself. Authenticity is a skill that can be learned
by practicing being honest with yourself.
