Model PIRECL Combustible Gas Detector

PIRECL Accessories Accessories for the model PIRECL including duct-mount and sample extraction system configurations are scheduled for release by mid-year, 2002. Please contact the gas detection product marketing department for additional information.

Frequently Asked Questions 1. How is the PIRECL (Eclipse) different from the model PIR9400 Pointwatch gas detector? The PIRECL utilizes an entirely new mechanical and electrical design. All standard units will offer 420ma output with HART, as well as RS-485 Modbus output. In addition, a special Eagle Quantum Premier-compatible version PIRECL will be available by early 2002. This unit will be operate only with the Eagle Quantum Premier (EQP) System. The table below summarizes key product differences.

2.

Will the PIR9400 Pointwatch continue to be available?

There are no plans to discontinue the PIR9400A aluminum model. However, a phase-out plan will be implemented by mid-2002 to place the PIR9400S (stainless steel) version only on Retired Product Status (RPS). This plan will coincide with the release of the Russian-approved PIRECL, and also the release of new accessories for the PIRECL such as the duct-mount and sample extraction assemblies. The PIR9400S will continue to be available for the foreseeable future. 3. Are the U9500H Infiniti transmitter and R8471H controller devices compatible with PIRECL?

Yes, these devices are compatible. During the PIRECL setup routine, simply select the PIR9400 mode of communication to ensure the PIRECL diagnostic information and fault signal output levels mimic the PIR9400 detector. This device setup is completed using either a 275 handheld communicator or a HART system interface or Modbus system interface. 4. The PIRECL provides 4 different methods of initiating calibration. calibrate? How often should I

As this device has no undisclosed failure modes, routine calibration is not required. Device calibration is required whenever the gas signal-processing program is changed from the factory default methane setting. Calibration can be performed on a regular basis if desired, but should normally not be necessary. Calibration initiation options include via the on-board, non-intrusive magnetic switch, the 275 handheld communicator, an externally located, hardwired switch, or via the RS-485 Modbus command option.

5. How will a customer use HART communication capability of the PIRECL?

Model PIRECL Combustible Gas Detector

There are a number of ways to utilize the HART communication. The primary master system is generally a distributed control system (DCS), programmable logic controller (PLC), or asset management system (AMS). The secondary master can be a handheld communicator or another PC. The PIRECL and most HART field devices will respond to commands from the primary or secondary master. This capability ensures global HART compatibility and provides customers with the confidence and security that the PIRECL will communicate reliably with their HART instrument network or plant-wide asset management system. 6. What are the differences between the FM/CSA certified PIRECL and the CENELEC/CE certified PIRECL models?

The FM/CSA-approved units provide (2) 3/4" NPT conduit openings, and the CENELEC/CE units offer (2) 25MM conduit openings. In addition, due to variation in testing criteria, the FM/CSAapproved units offer an explosion-proof HART communication port, while the CENELEC/CE-certified PIRECL provides an intrinsically-safe HART communication port. Even though the electronic circuitry for both versions includes an on-board i.s. zener barrier, and is identical, the net result of the testing differences is that our FM/CSA-approved product users should always de-classify the surrounding area before removing the threaded cover to the on-board HART port. Users of the CENELEC/CE units may use the HART connection without area de-classification. 7. Is the PIRECL position-sensitive, and is there a recommended mounting orientation?

The PIRECL will operate normally regardless of mounting orientation. However, we recommend that the device be installed with the long axis of the device parallel to the ground for maximum effectiveness of the weather baffle. The self-draining characteristics of the weather baffle will be optimized with the detector installed in this manner. 8. When will the PIRECL optional relay output model be available, and how will this option be installed?

The PIRECL with the optional relay output is planned for release by March, 2002. This PIRECL model will include the relay board pre-installed into the internal wiring compartment. It will be compatible with standard 4-20ma output version PIRECL only. Note the relay output board is a factory-fitted option only as a different cover is required and our approval agencies require a separate product label on the relay-output models. All relay output models are explosion-proof certified only. 9 What is the difference between the weatherbaffle assemblies with the standard inlet nozzle th and the 1/8 NPT inlet nozzle?

The standard inlet nozzle comes with a tethered plastic protective cap, and is used with a standard th calibration gas kit tube. The weatherbaffle with the 1/8 NPT inlet nozzle is provided to enable the installation of a compression fitting for use with permanently installed cal gas tubing.

10. Will our existing model 275 HART communicator work with the PIRECL?

Model PIRECL Combustible Gas Detector

Yes, existing 275 communicators will talk with the PIRECL. However, unless the 275 includes the HART device descriptors (DD's) for Eclipse, the communication will be in a generic version only. Numerous global HART suppliers are capable of programming new DD's into the HART Communicator. Please visit the Hart Foundation website at www.hartcomm.org for a complete listing of suppliers and additional information regarding HART communication. The DD release to request for your model 275 is: RELEASE/00008f/007f/0101.AOT 11. What is the dual safety rating mentioned, and what advantage does this provide?

The CENELEC-certified PIRECL wiring terminal compartment uses an approved design that allows either an increased safety "Ex e" termination, or a flameproof "Ex d" termination of the field cabling. A CENELEC certified cable entry device or gland of either type is acceptable. The FM/CSA-certified PIRECL models provide an explosion-proof and nonincendive design only.
