DTC P0087 Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) Too Low


Description Thecommonrailfuelsystemiscomprisedoftwofuelpressuresections:asuctionsidebetweenthefueltankandthefuel supplypumpandahigh-pressuresidebetweenthefuelsupplypumpandthefuelinjectors.Fuelisdrawnfromthefueltank viaafeedpumpandthenpumpedintothefuelrailbytwoplungers,allofwhichareinternaltothefuelsupplypump.Thishigh pressureisregulatedbytheECMusingthefuelrailpressure(FRP)regulatordependantuponvaluesfromtheFRPsensor attachedtothefuelrail.Incaseoffuelrailoverpressure,apressurelimitervalvethreadedintothefuelrailwillopentorelease overpressureandreturnfuelbacktothefueltank.IftheECMdetectsthatthefuelrailpressurewentexcessivelyhigh,then sharplydecreased,thisDTCwillsetindicatinghighfuelpressure,whichactivatedthepressurelimitervalve. Condition for Running the DTC DTCsP0091,P0092,P0192,P0193,P0642andP0643arenotset. TheignitionswitchisON. Condition for Setting the DTC TheECMdetectsthatthepressurelimitervalveisactivatedwithoverpressure(morethan30,500psi[210 MPa])inthefuelrail. Action Taken When the DTC Sets TheECMilluminatestheMILwhenthediagnosticrunsandfails.RefertoDTCTypeDefinitionsforAction TakenWhentheDTCSets-TypeA. TheECMlimitsfuelinjectionquantity. TheECMinhibitsEGRcontrol. TheECMinhibitsDPFregenerationcontrol. TheECMinhibitscruisecontrol. TheECMinhibitsPTOcontrol. Condition for Clearing the DTC RefertoDTCTypeDefinitionsforConditionforClearingtheMIL/DTC-TypeA. Diagnostic Aids AnintermittentlystickingFRPregulatormayhaveallowedthefuelpressuretobecomehighenoughtoopen thepressurelimitervalve. AskewedFRPsensorvaluecansetthisDTC.TheFRPSensoronthescantoolshouldread0.9to1.0volt aftertheenginehasstoppedrunningforaminimumof30seconds. Important: If the fuel tank is empty or near empty, air might be allowed to go into the fuel system. With air in the fuel system, smooth flow of fuel into the supply pump is interrupted and this DTC may set. Perform bleeding of fuel system after refilling. Test Description

Isthereaninjectorthatdoesnotchangeengine speedwhencommandedOFF? 1.Inspectthefuelsystemlineconnections betweenthefueltankandthefuelsupplypump fortightnessandallfuelhosesforcuts,cracks andfortheuseofproperclamps. Notice: The fuel system from the fuel tank(s) to the fuel supply pump is under a slight vacuum with the engine running. As a result, air can enter the fuel system if these connections are not tight. Air in the fuel system will cause fuel rail pressure fluctuations especially at high engine speed and load, which may set this DTC. 2.Pumptheprimingpumpuntilitbecomesfirm.If thereisaleakonthesuctionsideofthefuel systembetweentheprimingpumpandthefuel supplypump,theprimingpumpwillnotbuildup sufficientfirmnessandfuelleakagemayoccur. 3.Starttheengineandcheckforhighsidefuel systemleaksatthefuelsupplypumpandfuel rail. Notice: Fuel may leak under the cylinder head cover from the inlet high pressure line. In such case, the engine oil level will rise. Inspect for fuel leakage into the engine oil. 4.Repairanyfuelsystemleaksasnecessary. Didyoufindandcorrectthecondition? 1.TurnOFFtheignition. 2.Removetherubberfuelhosefromthefuelfilter housing(fuelsupplypumpside).Useapanto catchthefuelfromtheremovedfuelline. Notice: The fuel pressure/ vacuum gauge connector and the adapter hose must be cleaned before connecting to the fuel line. Otherwise, foreign material internal to the tools line may damage the fuel supply pump. 7 3.ConnectthegaugeadapterEN-47667withfuel pressure/vacuumgaugeassemblyJ-44638in serieswiththefilterhousingandthe disconnectedfuelhose.Ensuretheservicetool andfuellineconnectionsaretight. 4.Bleedthefuelsystembyprimingthepriming pumpuntilitbecomesfirm,thencrankoverthe engineforamaximumof5seconds.Repeatas necessaryuntiltheenginestarts. 5.Lettheenginerunatidleforatleast1minute. 6.Monitorthefuelpressure/vacuumgaugewhile holdingtheenginespeedhigherthan2500RPM 5inHg GotoStep9 GotoStep8

Doesthefuelpressure/vacuumgaugeever indicatealargervacuumthanthespecified amountduringthetest? 1.Fullyclampoffafuelhoseasclosetothefuel tankaspossible(thiswilldrawvacuumonthe fuelsystem).Youcanalsodisconnectafuelline andplugit. 2.Starttheengineandturntheidlespeed selectorknobtothehighestposition.(Full clockwisedirection.Theidlespeedisincreased upto1600RPM.) 3.Monitorthefuelpressure/vacuumgauge. Important: Release the clamp or open the plug when the gauge is likely to be more than 8 inHg during the test. Canavacuumofatleastthespecifiedamountbe pulledonthefuelsystem? 1.Inspectthefuellinesbetweenthefuelsupply pumpandfueltankforbeingcrushedorkinked. 2.Inspectforapluggedfueltankventvalve. 3.Inspectinsidethefueltank(ifpossible)forany foreignmaterialthatmaybegettingdrawninto thefuellinepickupcausingablockedcondition. 4.Repairorreplaceasnecessary. Didyoufindandcorrectthecondition? 1.Inspectthefuelsystemlineconnections betweenthefueltankandthefuelsupplypump fortightnessandallfuelhosesforcuts,cracks andfortheuseofproperclamps. 2.Repairorreplaceasnecessary. Didyoufindandcorrectthecondition? 1.TurnOFFtheignition. 2.DisconnecttheFRPregulatorharness connector. 3.Inspectforanintermittent,forpoorconnections andcorrosionattheharnessconnectorofthe FRPregulator(pins1and2ofE-17). 4.DisconnecttheECMharnessconnector. 5.Inspectforanintermittent,forpoorconnections andcorrosionattheharnessconnectorofthe ECM(pins20,21,33and34ofE-73). 6.Testforhighresistanceoneachcircuit. 7.Repairtheconnection(s)orcircuit(s)as necessary.

Didyoufindandcorrectthecondition? Replacethefuelfiltercartridge.RefertoFuel FilterCartridgeReplacement. Didyoucompletethereplacement? ReplacetheFRPsensor.RefertoFRPSensor Replacement. Didyoucompletethereplacement? Important: Replacement fuel injector must be programmed. Replacetheappropriatefuelinjectorthatdoes notchangeenginespeedwhencommanded OFF.RefertoFuelInjectorReplacement/Fuel InjectorFlowRateProgramming. Didyoucompletethereplacement? Important: The fuel supply pump adjustment value must be learned to the ECM. Important: Always replace the fuel filter cartridge when a FPR regulator is replaced. 16 ReplacetheFPRregulatorandfuelfilter cartridge.RefertoFuelSupplyPump ReplacementandFuelFilterCartridge Replacment.
