The basic details


This course is delivered over a six month period and is available through either distance or flexible learning modes of study.

Who is this qualification for?


This qualification is ideal for people who work for local authorities dealing with homelessness; those who work for housing associations or voluntary sector organisations that work with homelessness people; housing advisors; those who provide or manage support services for homeless people. This course is also an ideal grounding for those whose future career paths may be taking them towards working with homeless people or those with aspirations to do so.

Flexible or distance learning?


Distance learning
If you choose the distance learning route, you can start the course when it suits you and you will work through on-line learning materials with regular email and telephone contact with a personal tutor to support and monitor your progress through the course.

This qualification has four mandatory units


Unit 1: Homelessness Services and Prevention (3 QCF Credits)
Understand the statutory framework for the provision of services to people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness Know about accommodation and services for people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness Understand how homelessness may be prevented

Flexible learning
If you choose the flexible learning route, you will be allocated to a regional course when one becomes available in your area. The flexible course will be delivered via four study days.

Unit 2: Involving housing Service Users (3 QCF Credits)


Understand why service user involvement is important in housing in a range of settings Know a range of opportunities for service user involvement in housing Understand how to plan for service user involvement

If there are several people in your organisation who would like to complete the Certificate, we can work with you to set up a flexible learning course in-house

What help and support is there?


If you have not studied recently and lack confidence or study skills, let us know so we can give you the support you need. Similarly, if you have a disability or if English is not your first language, we will work with you and provide you with the help you need to ensure you are not disadvantaged in working towards this qualification. During your studies you will be supported by your personal tutor, the dedicated student support team at the Centre for Housing and Support and on-line via the CHS Moodle site.

Unit 3: The role of the support worker for independent living (3 QCF Credits)
Understand the values and principles that underpin support services for independent living. Understand the role of the support worker in supporting identified needs, goals and aspirations of individuals Understand the role of the support workers in safeguarding individuals

What are QCF Credits?


The QCF is the Governments framework for recognising vocational achievement through the award of credit for units and qualifications across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Standardised titles have been introduced which will make vocational qualifications easier to understand and a centralised database will help to track credit and provide learners with an online record of their achievements. Under this framework single Units are awarded credits. This course earns you 13 QCF Credits.

What does it cost?


Distance Learning
The Centre for Housing & Support course fee includes all your tuition for the year plus your dedicated personal Tutor support via telephone, email or on-line. The Fee is 521 + the CIH Registration fee applicable at the time of booking.*

Flexible Learning
For the flexible learning route your fee also covers the cost of the attended study days. The Fee is 787 plus the CIH Registration fee applicable at the time of booking.*
* The Chartered Institute of Housing Student Registration Fee for the Certificate is 117 at time of publication. This includes Student Membership of the CIH and a subscription to Inside Housing, the CIH weekly magazine.

Can I progress beyond this qualification?


This Level 3 qualification places you firmly on the ladder to vocational progression. You can, for example, complete further units to gain the Level 3 Certificate in Housing Practice.

What else do I get?


Students will receive free membership to CHS for the period of their study. This entitles them to receive the weekly news update Thursday@Three, the centres weekly email update bringing news of further training opportunities, special offers and useful free information. Students also receive the Quarterly Good Practice e-zine.
