PUBLIC SPEAKING 30/4/2013 SMK TELUK SENTANG RECYCLING BEGINS FROM HOME Master of ceremony, the honourable judges,

, fellow participants , ladies and gentlemen. A very good morning, I bid to all of you. My name is Hasmira and my topic for today is R !"!#I$% & %I$' (R)M H)M * &efore I proceed, allow me to e+plain the meaning of recycling. According to the #ongman ,ictionary of !ontemporary nglish, it is where used objects or materials go through a special process so that they can be reused . -e can simply pass on old clothes, newspapers, plastics and aluminium cans to recycling centres to ma.e good use of these items. #adies and gentlemen, In line with /H AR/H ,A"* 0celebration on 11 April, I pledge to ma.e the world a better place to live in 2 by starting to recycle at home. #et us see how we can do to ease the burden of Mother arth. -e all .now that the temperature is rising by the day and global warming is the main factor behind all une+pected and e+treme weather changes occurring world wide. (or e+ample hurricanes, tornados, flood and heat waves to name a few. /hus it is our duty to help save the environment for future generations. (or a start, we should create and maintain a green environment that would survive for ages without threatening life on the planet. 'o, how do we do this, ladies and gentlemen3 /o begin with, let*s start at home. Household recycling or recycling in and around the house can be easy if we .now what to do. -e should find ways of recycling different materials. %ive it a thought when we go shopping at the supermar.ets 0 how are we going to recycle the products that we buy 333 Are we just going to thrash it all down the dustbins or are we going to reproduce things from the recycled materials3 $e+t, plan well whenever we go shopping. ,o you .now that in 1451, at 6eninsular Malaysia alone generated 17,444 metric tons of municipal solid waste daily. /he bul. of this is food 89:;<, paper 857;<, plastic 859;< followed by glass, metals and other wastes. MA#A"'IA$'* desire for electronic gadgets, especially handphones, is contributing to rising electronic waste, or e=waste. )n average, Malaysia generated about >44,444 tons of e=waste from household, business entities and institutions sector. In the long run, the e= waste may cause health= ha?ard. If dumped in landfills, these substances will leach out from the devices and seep into the ground.

Hence, this would lead to an increased amount of heavy metals in the soil, which would eventually be e+posed to humans resulting in learning disabilities in children and damage the lungs, .idneys and liver. -e have to thin. of the huge amount of household wastes we are throwing everyday and polluting the environment. /hus, we should , (I$I/ #" buy products that can be recycled easily such as glass, jars and aluminium cans. Infact, we should be more aware of products that are made from recycled materials. (or instance, tissue papers, recycled cardboard and sustainably harvested wood just to name a few. Another way to recycle is by selling waste paper and aluminium cans to recycling centres. /his is a good way to earn some cash, especially for students li.e us. /here are people who buy used materials such as tins, batteries, iron steel, plastics and faulty electrical products which they sell at the recycling centres. &ac. at home, we can also recycle in the garden. -e can help improve the environment outside the house by recycling garden products and planting trees. !omposting is a process where waste degrades into compost, which then be used as fertili?ers in the garden to help trees and plants grow. It is an e+cellent way of recycling garden and .itchen wastes, such as plant trimmings and leftover foods. In grass recycling, simply leave the cutting on the ground instead of throwing them away after mowing the lawn. /hey will decompose and turn into nutrients and act as fertili?ers in the soil. #adies and gentlemen, (inally recycling is an important factor in conserving natural resources and greatly contributes towards improving the environment. It will reduce the pollution of water and land where tons of household wastes disposed everyday causing the clogging of drains, rivers and unhealthy conditions around rubbish dumps. -hen the environment becomes cleaner and greener, global warming will also be reduced. 'o, once again I appeal to A## of you out there to do our part and begin the process of recycling in our homes. LOVE HY !ORL" NO!# O $RESERVE FOR HE F% %RE -ith that, I end my speech. /han. you very much for your attention. PUBLIC SPEAKING 30/4/2013 SMK TELUK SENTANG
