The electron beam passes through a pa ir of parallel plates separated by ov 2.5cm across which there is a potential difference of 75 Vas shown oppposite . b Copy and complete the diagram to show i the electric field and ii the path of the electron beam. c Ca lculate the strength of the electric field between the plates. d A magnetic field is applied in the region between the plates so t hat there is no deflection of the electrons as they pass through the plates. Give the direction in which must the magnetic field be applied, and justify your answer e Calculate the strength of the magnetic field required to give no deflection of the beam. 7 A 2.2,uF capacitor is charged to a potentia l difference of 15V, and a 3.3,uF capacitor is charged to a potential difference of 30v. .. a Calculate i the charge on each capacitor, [2] ii the energy stored by each capacitor. [2] b The capacitors are then joined together as in the circuit shown. When the switch S is closed, charge re-dist ributes between the capacitors . Explain why the final voltage across each capacitor is the same. [1]

c Show mal, once Ctlarge nas re-dJ srributed, the ratio of charge on each capacitor is equal to m e ratIO of the two capacitances. Hence calculate the [4) charge on each capacitor and the final potent ial difference. d Calculate the tota l energy stored by the capacitors and suggest w hy this is less than the total energy th at w ou ld be stored by t he capacitors individually. [3) 8 A student is designing an alarm circuit. She wants a time interval between closing a switch and the circuit becoming active. She decides to charge a 2200"F capacitor throu gh a resistor from a 5 V supply. The potential difference across the capacitor must rise to 4 .3V for the alarm ci rcuit to become active . Calculate the size of the resistor that she shou ld connect in the circuit to achieve a 1 minute delay. [3) 9 A teacher demonstrates electromagnetic induction by dropping a bar magnet from rest through the centre of a coil of w ire. A data logger records the emf in the coil. a i Why is a data logger necessary for thi s demonstration) [2) ii State the magnetic polarity on the upper side of the coil due to the induced cu rrent as the magnet approaches it. b Explain why the maximum negative ind uced volta ge induced is greater th an the [2) maximum positive induced voltag e. c A student comments that the areas between the graph above and below t he time axis look similar. Suggest why you wou ld expect these areas to be identical. [2)
10 An aluminium disc is rota ted about an axis passing through its centre by a motor. A strong magnet is broug ht close to the disc so that the disc passes through the pole pieces as shown .

When the magnet is introduced, the rate of rotation of the disc decreases. Use the laws of Faraday and Lenz to explain why this happens. [5)

A student is investigati ng the tran sformer effect. He makes a primary coil by w ind ing 20 turns of insulated w ire onto an empty cotton reel. He then w inds 50 turn s of insulated w ire on top of the primary to make a secondary coil. He connects the secondary to a cathode ray osci lloscope, and a low voltage AC supply to the primary. He expect s to record a larger voltage in the secondary than he applies to the primary, but finds that t he secondary voltage is qu ite small. He repeats the procedure, this time wi nding the coils on a soft iron rod. a Explain why you would expect the secondary voltage to be larger than t he primary voltage th is time. [2) b The AC supply is replaced by a steady DC supply w ith the same output voltage as the AC supply. Explain why there is no voltage produced in the second ary. [2) ii The student notices that the primary coil quickly gets very warm with the DC supply. Suggest w hy this w as not so noticeable with the AC supply. [3)
