Draw Interpret

Brainstorm - Students will brainstorm how they could create a comic strip of the novel. They will also brainstorm different types of Onomatopoeia they could use in their comic strips. Draw up a sample cartoon layout that weaker students can

Formative - Assess if the students are able to pluck out the main events from the story.

writing technique of Onomatopoeia in their comics.

use as a guide. Draw - Students will draw the main events from Iron Man into a comic strip format in their English workbooks. They will colour these in with pencil.

Assess students correct use of literary technique and their recognition of how it is used in the novel.

What are the main character traits of Iron Man? What are the main character traits of the dragon? What do they have in common? Students who finish early can write a contribution to their board Venn Diagram. They can also draw the characters to show the physical differences.

Summative Assess if students are able to identify the different characteristics of the characters.

Students will watch the movie version of the book and compare it to the novel.

Viewing Compare

Compare Discuss with the students what differences there are in the video. Is the video more exciting? How do you feel about the seagulls not being included in the video? What parts are the same as the book? What do you prefer, the book or the video? Why?

Formative Assess if students can identify the different features in the video.

Students will complete a plot graph for Iron Man.

Graph Summarize

Class Graph Draw a plot graph for the novel Iron Man on the board. As a class complete the plot graph. Discuss with the students what they can summarize from the graph. What does this tell us? Do you all agree with this? What would you change? Students then draw their own plot graph and plot according to their own opinions. Students who complete this task early can plot their graph on top of the class result. Summarizing - Students will discuss their graph compared to the class graph. As a class come up with some conclusions. Have students write one or two conclusions they found onto their page.

Formative Assess if students are able to make a conclusion based on the graph.

Students will review their original prediction and write an alternative ending for the novel.

Review Prediction Have students re-read their earlier predictions and write what they now think of these predictions. Students who finish early can write an alternative ending to the novel

Summative Assess students ability to reflect on their prediction.

Differentiation Students will have the option to stay on the mat to read the chapters instead of going back to their chairs. This will provide more question time and enable me to check for understanding before progressing. Examples will be placed on the board as a guide for those who need it. Extension Students can come onto the mat once they have completed the lesson objectives. There will be extension activities ready for them that relate to the lesson objectives. Culminating Activity/ Assessment: Plot Graph Reviewing Prediction
