Conic Sections Project: Third 6 Weeks Take Home TestPAP Precalculus Due Date for B Day classes is Wednesday,

December 11 There are 4 different types of conic sections: Parabolas v Circles Hyperbolas Ellipses I. PART ONE (50 points): Write a letter to your parents or guardian explaining the four different types of conic sections. The letter should include: A specific equation given in general form for each type of conic (see your notes or take home test from last year, search internet, last years PAP Algebra II book, Demana PAP Pre-Calculus book, etc. for ideas) NOTE: Each conic equation given must be for a conic which is NOT centered at the origin. How to recognize the conic from a general equation Show how to transform your specific general form equations to standard form List the characteristics for each conic (pertinent informationsee below) Demonstrate how to graph it (must use graph paper and show pertinent information) Pertinent Information required for your different conic sections: A. Circle: derive equation, identify center and radius, and eccentricity B. Ellipse: derive equation, identify center, foci, vertices, co-vertices, and eccentricity C. Hyperbola: derive equation, identify center, vertices, conjugate points, asymptotes, foci, and eccentricity D. Parabola: derive equation, identify vertex, focus, directrix line, and eccentricity Give a visual for each type of conic in a real life situation (must be a visual, photo from internet, etc.) Any other pertinent information regarding each type of conic you may wish to include Example: Dear Mom and Dad, There are 4 different types of conic sections. The 4 different types of conic sections are parabolas, circles, hyperbolas, and ellipses. The parabola looks like a U and has the general form_________, and the standard form____________ Your letter will be graded based on mathematical accuracy, completeness in describing the four conic sections, use of visuals to enhance your descriptions, and grammar/punctuation. II. PART TWO (50 points): Create a poster, sculpture, scrapbook, video, diorama, or another type of visual describing the 4 types of conic sections. BE CREATIVE! Research internet, etc. for ideas and/or information. The creative part of this project will be graded based on mathematical accuracy, completeness in describing the four conic sections, visual representation of the conic sections, creativity, and neatness/organization. This project counts as a Test grade for the third 6 weeks.
