Page 1 Guidance notes on writing and formatting your YRC synopsis

GENERAL The guidance given on this page is accompanied by a synopsis template on page 2. Please use the formatting sho n on page 2 e!actly" e.g. bold sentence case for headings and titles. Applicants must submit a pro#ect synopsis of a research pro#ect they are actively involved in for the $nstitution of %tructural Engineers& 'oung Researchers& (onference 2)*+. The abstract" including tables" references and space for images" should have a minimum length of half a page and must not e!ceed t o pages. Page 2 Frequency domain fatigue damage estimation of offshore wind turbine support structures
Lszl rany 3niversity of 0ristol !ro"ect ob"ecti#es and goals The pro#ect aims at developing a fast fatigue estimation method for the support structures of offshore ind turbines to assist integrated design of the rotor-nacelle assembly" the to er" the substructure and the foundation. $n the field of ind energy converter systems the preferred choice of detailed fatigue design is time domain analysis. The operational states of the ind turbine are simulated in the time domain and the moments at the substructure level are calculated from this analysis. The time history of loads on the support structure is then analysed by some cycle counting method <e.g. Rainflo counting" reservoir method" range pairs method=" and 2iner&s rule is applied assuming linear damage accumulation. This analysis" ho ever" re6uires detailed information about the ind turbine" including geometry" characteristics" blade profile" aerofoil characteristics" control system parameters" etc. The goals of the pro#ect are - to develop fre6uency domain fatigue damage estimation methods" - to provide a tool for 6uic1 assessment of the fatigue life of the structural components of the to er" the substructure and the foundation for design optimiDation" - and to allo the designer of the support structure to incorporate fatigue life estimation into the design ithout detailed 1no ledge about the ind turbines.
