Notes of Usage

(1) There are operating higher voltage in the EVB. Please take care electrification. (2) This EVB does not have a heat protection circuit. When load is heavy, heat sink will be hot. So, be careful to burn. If the fan on the EVB is not enough, please prepare other cooling fan or other. (3) The circuit and parts on the EVB are selected for evaluation of R2A20111. So, please execute enough evaluation in your side when you design and mass-produce it. (4) If you use outside DC power supply, please never apply AC voltage without applying outside DC power supply. Because it is possible that inrush protection resistor blows out in case of heavy load.

Output capacitor (Cout) is calculated based on the hold up time of output voltage (tkeep) and the minimum output voltage (Vout (min)). (formula (3))
Cout = 2 Pout tkeep Vout2 Vout (min)2 ......... (3)

Cout will be 811 F based on the following conditions. Hold up time (tkeep) is the half of minimum AC frequency (12.5 ms). Allowance of output voltage change is 20 V. Ripple current (ICripple) is shown below (formula (4)).

PFC-ON Terminal Voltage

PFC-ON inputs voltage smoothed by capacitor and divided by resistors from the full rectified AC input voltage waveform in order to detect input AC level. It is calculated based on formula (5).
VPFC-ON = 2 2 Rpfc2 Rpfc1 + Rpfc2 Vac (rms) ......... (5)

It should be larger than 0.82 V and not exceed PFC-ON terminal absolute maximum rating. On the EVB, it will be 1.37 V at AC 80 V and 4.55 V at AC 265 V with 720 and 14 k voltage dividing resistor. Value of Cpfc is calculated with formula (6) based on that cutoff frequency is around 10 Hz.
Cpfc = 2 fc

1
Rpfc1 Rpfc2 Rpfc1 + Rpfc2 ......... (6)

Cpfc will be 1.16 F according to the above formula. On the EVB, it is 1 F. PFC-ON terminal is for monitoring AC voltage. Time constant of Rpfc2 and Cpfc are as small as possible because it will be a delay of AC voltage monitoring when time constant is large. The signal of PFC-ON terminal and IAC terminal dont monitor the output from main bridge diode because of remained voltage of capacitor.

Voltage and current amplifier are transconductance (gm) amplifier. It does not need to feedback for input side. Therefore, it is possible to minimize influence on input circuit by feedback circuit. Gain of gm amplifier is calculated by product of transconductance and output impedance. For example of voltage amplifier, its shown with formula (27). Gm-v is transconductance of voltage amplifier. Rvo is output resistor of voltage amplifier itself. Outline is shown figure 6 when each parameter change. Frequency characteristics of amplifier is shown figure 7.

R2A20111 EVB PFC Control IC R2A20111 Evaluation Board 9.12 Phase Compensation Circuit of Voltage Amplifier
Output voltage load regulation is in inverse proportion to voltage amplifier open loop gain. Amount of voltage variation (dVout) of output voltage until power limit is shown formula (28).
dVout = Veo Rfb1 + Rfb2 Gm-v Ro Rfb2 ........ (28)

Veo will be around 4.7 V. Gm-v is transconductance of voltage amplifier. Ro is total output resistance of voltage amplifier and shown formula (29). Rvo is output resistance of voltage amplifier itself.
Ro = Rvo Reo1 Rvo + Reo1 ........ (29)

Gm-v is 200 A/V and Rvo is around 4 M. Reo1 will be 885 k when dVout is 5 V. On the EVB, it is 820 k. GF-V, this is the gain of boost stage, is shown with formula (30).
GF-V = Rfb2 Pout 2f Cout Veo Vout Rfb1 + Rfb2 ........ (30)

Frequency characteristics of voltage loop is shown product of frequency characteristics of boost stage and voltage amplifier. Compensation is necessary enough to decrease ripple voltage (twice of AC frequency). As a recommendation, voltage loop gain will be around 30 dB on ripple frequency and cut off frequency will be close to zero cross point of voltage loop. GF-V is 0.00359 times (48.9 dB) at twice of minimum AC frequency (80 Hz). Therefore, voltage amplifier gain should be + 18.9 dB (8.81 times) in order to be voltage loop gain is 30 dB at 80 Hz. Cut off frequency is set 5.18 Hz (80 Hz 8.81 / 136.1) because of open loop gain of voltage amplifier is 42.7 dB (136.1 times). Therefore, Ceo1 is 0.045 F (1 / (2 5.18 Hz 680.5 k)). On the EVB, Ceo1 is selected 0.033 F in order to have enough phase margin. The theoretical characteristics is shown figure 8.

Loop compensation of current amplifier is fixed by gain to Vrcs from Vcao (gain of PWM: GF-C). It is shown with formula (31).

Vct is around 2.95 V that is amplitude of CT terminal. Product of gain of PWM and current amplifier will be gain of current loop. Current loop frequency characteristics should have set below conditions. It has enough gain at twice of AC input frequency. It has enough lower gain at switching frequency. As a recommendation, Over 50 dB at twice of AC input frequency Set zero cross frequency of current loop around 1/10 of switching frequency. Around 30 dB at switching frequency On the EVB, Rcao1 is 82 k, Rcao2 is 2.2 k, Ccao1 is 470 pF, Ccao2 is 6800 pF. The theoretical characteristics is shown figure 9.

R2A20111 EVB PFC Control IC R2A20111 Evaluation Board 9.14 Pattern Layout
In designing the pattern layout, pay as much attention as is possible to the following points. (1) Place the IC pins (particularly, CGND, CAI, PFC-ON, IAC, FB) and their wiring as far from high-voltage switching lines (particularly the drain voltage for the power MOSFET) as possible and in general design the wiring to minimize switching noise. (2) Wiring between CGND and Rcs via Rmo and wiring between CAI and RCS via Rmo connect nearly and separately to Rcs. (3) It is probable that stability operation is achieved by inputting signals via low pass filter to CLIMIT, PFC-ON, IAC, FB terminal. (4) Place a resistors and capacitors connect VREF , RT, CAO, CT, VCC as close to the IC as possible, and keep the wiring short. (5) Pattern layout priority (for reference) 1. Place the IC as far from high voltage switching lines as possible. 2. Place the stabilizing capacitor for VREF as close to the IC as possible. 3. Place the stabilizing capacitor for VCC as close to the IC s possible. 4. Place the resistors and capacitors (Rcao1, Rcao2, Ccao1, Ccao2) for CAO as close to the IC as possible. 5. Wiring between CGND and Rcs via Rmo and Wiring between CAI and Rcs via Rmo connect nearly and separately to Rcs. 6. Place the timing resistor for RT as close to the IC as possible. 7. Place the timing capacitor for CT as close to the IC as possible. 8. Place the resistors and capacitors (Reo1, Reo2, Ceo1, Ceo2) for EO as close to the IC as possible. 9. Place the resistors and capacitors (Rpfc1, Rpfc2, Cpfc) for PFC-ON as close to the IC as possible. 10. Place the resistors (Rfb1, Rfb2) for FB as close to the IC as possible. 11. Place the resistors (Rac) for IAC as close to the IC as possible. 12. Place the resistors (Rclimit1, Rclimit2) for CLIMIT as close to the IC as possible. 13. Place the capacitor (Cdelay) for DELAY as close to the IC as possible. 14. Place the capacitor (Css) for SS as close to the IC as possible. (6) There is a potential that placing the heat sink between ICs and power MOSFET will be a some kind of shield and reduce the radiation noise (figure 10).
