WORLD FOOD GARDEN
uring the early part of last century, 40% of all produce consumed in the UK, the USA and Canada was grown in gardens at home. WorldFoodGarden.org is dedicated to bringing back that forty percent mark and more, to the whole entire world. WorldFoodGarden.org is a mapbased website whose mission is to connect all of the food gardens in the world onto one map to show the world for what it has the potential to beone giant cross-pollinating ecosystem filled up with food gardens! In addition we provide location specific gardening information, networks and get started tutorials. Given todays inter-relationships between food transport, carbon emissions, and oil dependence, we believe that much of the worlds environmental, economic, and political issues could be alleviated if everyone in the world tended their own small food garden.

Gardening is a resource we all have the right to use to keep our minds, bodies and planet healthy. One window-box tomato plant may not change the world alone, but collectively, a world full of small food gardens could make a huge differance. WorldFoodGarden.org was begun as a self funded project and is now being maintained and enhanced by a few volunteers working together remotely from across the globe. That said, the volunteer's time is sparse and there are costs involved. If you wish to help the WorldFoodGarden project grow stronger, please consider volunteering or making a tax deductible donation. There are enough resources for everyone on Earth, so long as we show each other how to use them. The more gardeners and gardening orgs that add gardens to the map, the more potential cross-pollination will happen, of ideas

and gardening knowledge, to help each other grow healthy sustainable food. Please consider adding your garden to the Worlds First Map of Small Food Gardens.. Let the Garden Age Begin!!! WorldFoodGarden.org

Electrical Device Plugs Directly Into Tr ees For Po w er

n todays world of high-tech portable gadgets, iPods and cell phones, we've become dependent upon readily accessible electric outlets to power our devices and charge our batteries. But now researchers at the University of Washington have discovered nature's alternative to the power outlet: living trees. Thats right, living trees. UW engineers Babak Parviz and Brian Otis have invented an electrical device that can be plugged directly into any tree for power. As far as we know this is the first peer-reviewed paper of someone powering something entirely by stick-

ing electrodes into a tree, said Parviz. The research was based upon a breakthrough study last year out of MIT, when scientists found that plants generate a voltage of up to 200 millivolts when one electrode is placed in a plant and the other in the surrounding soil. Those researchers are already designing devices which act as forest sensors powered entirely by this new method. But until now, no one has applied these findings to the development of tree power. It all began last summer with UW undergraduate student Carlton Himes (also the studys co-author). He spent his summer wandering around the woods surrounding campus, hooking nails to bigleaf maple trees and connecting them to his voltmeter. Sure enough, the trees registered a steady volt-

age of up to a few hundred millivolts. The next step for the UW team was to build a circuit to run on the available tree power. Because the voltage generated by the trees can be so small, the resulting devicea boost converter was specialized to take input voltages of as little as 20 millivolts to be stored to produce greater output. The devices produced output voltage ended up being 1.1 volts, which is enough to run low-power sensors. Of course, the researchers were quick to point out that the technology is still a long way off from being able to power normal electronics. Normal electronics are not going to run on the types of voltages and currents that we get out of a tree, Parviz said. At the very least, these findings open the door for new generations of electronics which might eventually be efficient enough to take advantage of tree power. It certainly excites the imagination. Maybe in time well be witness to weekend picnickers lounging in local parks with their iPods and cell phones plugged into the surrounding foliage. MNN

V itamin B6 and B2 Reduce Colon Cancer Risk By 20 Percent
ncreased intakes of vitamin B6 and riboflavin (B2) are associated with a 20% reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer, says a new study. However, data from 88,045 postmenopausal women indicated that folate intakes during the initial folic acid fortification period in the US were linked to an increase in risk, according to findings published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Mandatory fortification of grain products with folic acidthe synthetic, bioavailable form of folatewas introduced in the US in 1998 in order to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects (NTD) in infants. The Womens Health Initiative Observational Study (WHI-OS) straddled the initiation of the fortification program, and indicated that there may have been an increase in the risk of colorectal cancer among women exposed to this initial period. One explanation for the observed transient increased risk is that in the early post-fortification period, total folate content of several fortified foods were reported to initially exceed the amount specified by federal regulations, said the researchers, led by TingYuan David Cheng from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, and Stefanie Zschabitz from the National Center for Tumor Diseases in Germany. Although there was no systematic analysis of enriched cereal-grain products, mean folate content was reported to have been reduced during 20002003.

A study in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology CJPP) found that rats given regular multivitamin B supplements showed a significantly lower risk of developing colon cancer when they were exposed to carcinogens. These B vitamins play a role in lowering homocysteine levels in the blood and thus may help reduce the risk of heart disease and also help prevent cervical and colon cancer. On the flip side, increased intakes of riboflavin and vitamin B6 were associated with significant reductions in the risk of colorectal cancer with stronger associations for tumors in specific regions, and among infrequent alcohol drinkers, said the researchers. Vitamin B-6 and riboflavin are interrelated because flavin mononucleotide serves as a cofactor in the synthesis of pyridoxal-5_phosphate,explained the researchers. Vitamin B-6 is a water-soluble nutrient found in foods such as meat, whole grain products, vegetables, bananas and nuts. Suboptimal status of vitamin B-6 or riboflavin leads to the accumulation of homocysteine, a metabolite strongly linked with colorectal cancer. The studys findings were based on data from over 88,000 post-menopausal women. Over the course of the study 1,003 incident colorectal cancer cases were diagnosed. Results showed that the highest average intakes of riboflavin (over 3.97 milligrams per day) had a 20% lower risk of colorectal cancer, compared to

women with the lowest average intakes (less than 1.8 mg). In addition, the highest average intakes of vitamin B6 (over 3.88 mg per day) also had a 20% lower risk of colorectal cancer, compared to women with the lowest average intakes (less than 1.52 mg). No association between vitamin B12 intake and colorectal cancer risk was observed, while dietary folate intake was associated with an increase in cancer risk among women who had experienced the initiation of folic acid fortification for between three and nine years. Our observation that dietary, supplemental, and total folate intake were not associated with overall CRC risk is consistent with most of the literature, wrote the researchers. However, in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study with 525,488 individuals recruited in a similar time frame and age range as the WHI-OS cohort, inverse associations of total, dietary, and supplemental folate intake with CRC were observed for men and women when post-fortification dietary folate values were applied. The study confirmed that both sources of folate have protective effects but potentially may exist in men only. "The mechanism of this sex discrepancy may involve factors such as sexual hormone and folate demand and warrants further research. Health Freedom Alliance

Everything Petroleum Does, Hemp Does Better
f you look at history about 100 years ago, when the big oil boom started, that is when the economy surged and the population started seeing an increase. And, when you think about it, almost everything you have is the result of oil. Clothing, food, homes, vehicles, transportation, electronics, household goodsall are/were dependent on oil, either in the manufacturing of those goods or the transportation used in getting those goods to you. The United States uses 25% of the worlds daily oil supply, and imports 70% of that. (forestecologynetwork.org) Oil is not a renewable resource, and it is a DECLINING resource. Easy, cheap oil is on the decline. Countries are seeing a decline in oil extraction, and there is a rush to find either new oil fields or alternate sources of energy. Again, at this point, it is the easy cheap oil that is on the decline. Global oil production is declining at 8-10% per year. And what does this mean? Higher prices. For EVERYTHING. Now, this is not the end of the world as we know it. There IS a solution, and that solution is HEMP. Hemp does everything that petroleum does, AND BETTER! Extracting fossil fuels are harmful to the environment and to human health. Petroleum extracting and processing is a chemical-intensive, expensive process. Hemp oil for fuel is simply a matter of growing, harvesting, and processing. Petroleum-based plastics are not biodegradable. Hemp-based plastics are recyclable and biodegradable. Fuel for transportation can be replaced with hemp-based biofuels. Hemp fuel is clean, efficient, andif it spills it does not harm the environment, it is more like a fertilizer. Everything, EVERYTHING, that petroleum does, hemp does. So, why are we feeling this pain from fossil fuels? Why are we not allowing our farmers to grow hemp? Well, we know the reasonsbig oil, pharma, timber, and chemical companies do not want to lose their investment dollars; the military using OUR dollars to fund wars, some

of which have to do withyes, you guessed itOIL. What would happen if in the next few years we, in the U.S., farmed hemp on a large scale? We would have no more independence on foreign oil, we certainly wouldnt need so much money spent on the military, we would have a clean, safe alternative, and every single factor in our lives when it comes to food, clothing, health, transportation, housing, etc.it would all be thanks to HEMP. Our economy would start to heal. The government wouldnt need to

print new money, causing more debt (which, by the way, is NOT the answer to reviving a sick economy). So, what do we do now? We keep speaking, we keep educating, we work toward legalizing industrial hemp farming in the U.S. We put our energy into doing everything we can to rid ourselves of dependence on foreign and domestic fossil fuels. Will this happen overnight? No. Of course not. But we can begin taking steps NOW to take us in that direction. Waking Times

Goo g le Starts Watching What You Do Off The Internet Too
he most powerful company on the Internet just got a whole lot creepier: a new service from Google merges offline consumer info with online intelligence, allowing advertisers to target users based on what they do at the keyboard and at the mall. Without much fanfare, Google announced news this week of a new advertising project, Conversions API, that will let businesses build all-encompassing user profiles based off of not just what users search for on the Web, but what they purchase outside of the home. In a recent blog post on Googles DoubleClick Search site, the Silicon Valley giant says that targeting consumers based off online information only allows advertisers to learn so much. Conversions, tech-speak for the digital metric made by every action a user makes online, are incomplete until coupled with real life data, Google says. We understand that online advertising also fuels offline conversions, the blog post reads. Thus, Google says, To capture these lost conversions and bring offline into your online world, were announcing the open beta of our Conversions API for uploading offline conversion automatically. The blog goes on to explain that in-

store transactions, call-tracking and other online activities can be inputted into Google to be combined with other information to optimize your campaigns based on even more of your business data. Google is all but certain to ensure that all user data collected off- and online will be cloaked through safeguards that will allow for complete and total anonymity for customers. When onthe-Web interactions start mirroring real life activity, though, even a certain degree of privacy doesnt make Conversions API any less creepy. As Jim Edwards writes for Business Insider, If you bought a T shirt at The Gap in the mall with your credit card, you could start seeing a lot more Gap ads online later, suggesting jeans that go with that shirt. Of course, there is always the possibility that all of this information can be unencrypted and, in some cases, obtained by third-parties that you might not want prying into your personal business. Edwards notes in his report that Google does not explicitly note that intelligence used in Conversions API will be

anonymized, but the blowback from not doing as much would sure be enough to start a colossal uproar. Meanwhile, however, all of the information being collected by Googleestimated to be on millions of servers around the globeis being handed over to more than just advertising companies. Last month Google reported that the US government requested personal information from roughly 8,000 individual users during just the first few months of 2012. This is the sixth time weve released this data, and one trend has become clear: Government surveillance is on the rise, Google admitted with their report. RT.com

The Cr ee p y Mannequin That Spies On You

annequins in fashion boutiques are now being fitted with secret cameras to 'spy' on shoppers' buying habits. Benetton is among the High Street fashion chains to have deployed the dummies equipped with technology adapted from security systems used to identify criminals at airports. From the outside, the $3,200 (2,009) EyeSee dummy looks like

any other mannequin, but behind its blank gaze it hides a camera feeding images into facial recognition software that logs the age, gender and race of shoppers. Creepy: The EyeSee mannequin, which has a camera hidden behind its eye to track shoppers behaviour as they browse fashion boutiques to allow retailers to collect information on their customers This information is fed into a computer and is aggregated to offer retailers using the system statistical and contextual information they can use to develop their marketing strategies. Its makers boast: From now on you can know how many people enter the store, record what time there is a greater influx of customers (and which type) and see if some areas risk to be

overcrowded. However, privacy campaigners have denounced the system as 'creepy' and said that such surveillance is an instance of profit trumping privacy. The device is marketed by Italian mannequin maker Almax and has already spurred shops into adjusting window displays, floor layours and promotions, Bloomberg reported. With growth slowing in the luxury goods industry, the technology taps into retailers desperation to personalise their offers to reach increasingly picky customers. Coming Eventually: Print Your Own Or g ans
hris Anderson left his sweet job as editor in chief of Wired because he believes 3-D printing is going to be bigger than the Web. So far the technology, which enables desktop-size machines to print objects out of materials as diverse as recycled plastics and chocolate, is mainly the domain of professional designers, who have used it for years, and a growing band of early adopters. The machines tend to be slow and while prices have dropped, theres still not a killer app that has compelled mass interest in a $2,000-plus machine. The filamentthat is to say, inkisnt cheap either. But the still small industry is betting that the ability to manufacture whatever you want whenever you want it is too compelling not to catch on. Just start to imagine the possibilities. And the implications. And now heres something you probably didnt get to: printing bodily organs. Fast Company Co.Exist reports that the design firm Autodesk has partnered with a company called Organovo to develop the software necessary to instruct printers to create human tissue and organs. Its kind of like software to create a 3-D PDF except it would create living (maybe even breathing) tissue. The manufactured product would first be used for research but could eventually be transplanted into humans: Organovo is known for creating the first commercial 3-D

bioprinters back in 2010; as of September 2012, the company had produced 10 bioprinters, each of which reportedly costs hundreds of thousands of dollarsOrganovos NovoGen MMX Bioprinter shapes cellsoften stem cells from a donorinto 3-D tissue thats theoretically as good as anything created by the human body. Stealth Wear: ear New Counter-Surveillance Clothing Makes You Invisible to Drones
aking its debut on January 17th, the Stealth Wear line will include hoodies, scarves, hats, and t-shirts that will make the wearer invisible to thermal imaging cameras widely used throughout the unmanned aerial vehicle community. The idea is that the material blocks heat signatures, captured using

infrared sensors, which give people away to surveillance helicopters or drones from the skies above. [link] The flagship Stealth Wear line will include: The anti-drone hoodie and antidrone scarf: Garments designed to thwart thermal imaging, a technology used widely by UAVs. The XX-shirt: A x-ray shielding print in the shape of a heart, that protects your heart from x-ray radiation And the Off Pocket: An anti-phone accessory that allows you to instantly zero out your phones signal Harvey and his project team arent just limiting the scope of their work to antidrone technology either. Theyve introduced new techniques to counter computer vision (CV), also known as facial recognition. CV Dazzle is camouflage from computer vision (CV). It is a form of expres-

sive interference that combines makeup and hair styling (or other modifications) with face-detection thwarting designs. The name is derived from a type of camouflage used during WWI, called Dazzle, which was used to break apart the gestalt-image of warships, making it hard to discern their directionality, size, and orientation. Likewise, the goal of CV Dazzle is to break apart the gestalt of a face, or object, and make it undetectable to computer vision algorithms, in particular face detection. Because face detection is the first step in automated facial recognition, CV Dazzle can be used in any environment where automated face recognition systems are in use, such as Googles Picasa, Flickr, or Facebook CV Dazzle

Gr avitylight: L i g h t i n g For Developing Countries
here are currently over 1.5 billion people in the World who have no reliable access to mains electricity These people rely, instead, on biomass fuels (mostly kerosene) for lighting once the sun goes down. The World Bank estimates that, as a result, 780 million women and children inhale smoke which is equivalent to smoking two packets of cigarettes every day. The fumes also cause eye infections and cataracts, but burning kerosene is also more immediately dangerous: 2.5 million people a year, in India alone, suffer severe burns from overturned kerosene lamps. Burning Kerosene also comes with a financial burden: kerosene for lighting ALONE can consume ten to twenty percent of a households income. This burden traps people in a permanent state of subsistence living, buying cupfuls of fuel for their daily needs, as and when they can. The burning of Kerosene for lighting also produces 244 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide annually. A commonly held view is that solar powered lighting is the answer to these problems in the developing world. However a number of conflicting factors combine to complicate matters. Solar panels produce electricity only when the

sun shines, so the energy needs to be stored in a battery to produce the light when it becomes dark. The amount of energy stored is dependant on the size of the panel, the size of the battery, and how much (if any) sun has shone. However batteries, panels and lights are expensive, and beyond the reach of people with no savings. Solar lighting projects continue to provide lighting for thousands of people in the developing world, but the spread is slow because the cost is too high for individuals, so they need to be bought and installed by communities instead. Lower cost self-contained lamps are becoming more widely available, but batteries are the weak link, because they are expensive and deteriorate through use and over time. Very often, when buying a low cost solar lamp with an inbuilt rechargeable battery, a full third of what youre paying for is the battery, and you will need to replace it every few years. Assuming you can get a new battery. The capacity is often reduced to save money which limits the use time,

after which there is no light. With GravityLight, however, it only takes a few seconds to lift the weight, which creates enough energy for half an hour of light, whenever it is needed. It has no batteries to run out, replace or dispose of. It is completely clean and green. Because there are no running costs after the initial low cost purchase, it has the potential to lift people out of poverty, allowing them to use the money they have saved to buy more powerful solar lighting systems in the future. Company Unveils Small Personal-Sized Hydroelectricity Generator

apanese company Ibasei has unveiled a new idea in hydroelectricity generation; a turbine that can be placed in virtually any fast moving stream or river to generate small amounts of electricity for immediate use or as a charging station. Called the Cappa, it resembles an engine on a jet aircraft and can be easily placed into a location in just minutes. The idea behind the Cappa is that

not all hydroelectric systems need to be huge, and they dont have to plug a river or be situated at an optimal location either. Instead, any spot where the river narrows causing swift movement of the water can be used. The Cappa is put in place by fashioning a couple of spans of some sort across the river or stream to form bridges. The turbine is then lowered into the water and held in place by the frame resting on the span. Once in the water, the Cappa goes to work without any further ado. For water running at 2 m/s the turbine will generate about 250 W of electricity. Placing five of them in a stream could conceivably produce up to a 1 kW (allowing for control losses). To increase the efficiency of the turbine, engineers have tailored a diffuser that causes water flowing over the blades to move faster.

Spokespeople for the Cappa say the generator has been developed for a variety of purposes, from use as inplace generators at outdoor parks to emergency backup systems, particularly in the event of a flood. They also see it as an alternative to gas powered generators that people use when the electricity goes out. A single Cappa isnt capable of running a whole house of course, but it would be good enough to keep the lights on; and if it were used in conjunction with a battery storage system, perhaps in tandem with other renewable resources, a homeowner who happens to have a stream running through their yard might find it helps reduce utility bills. They expect to be ready to begin selling the generators sometime next year. Phys.org News

When the god of war and the lord of the underworld get together, highly unstable and volatile conditions can typically exist for a few days, and explosive events are possible. However, as this is a generally harmonious link up, much potential exists to implement positive changes in ones life. Nonetheless, issues concerning power or willpower are likely to arise, so avoid locking horns with anyone who will surely defend their beliefs as fiercely as you would your own. Improve efficiency wherever possible. Mars then trines Saturn on the 16th, when ambition is stimulated, and hard work and purposeful action win the day. Act on business or career options now. Do work requiring physical stamina. The sun slips quietly into Pisces late on the 18th (till March 19), heightening our intuition and psychic faculties. Intuitive insights are possible. Mercury stations Retrograde on February 23rd (till March 17), in 20 Pisces, so plans or arrangements of any importance should be implemented prior to this period. When the sun sextiles Pluto on March 1st, corporate enterprise and joint financial concerns are emphasized and, in general, supported. Find creative ways to recycle or reuse discarded items or resources. Constructive progress can be made towards career or educational goals as the sun trines Saturn later on the 1st. Advice from an elder, a mentor, or authority figure could prove helpful. Being both practical and creative achieves best results now. Energize your dreams and cherished objectives as the sun conjuncts Mercury on the 4th, in 15 Pisces. Communicate your bright ideas to those in a position to help you make them a reality. Trust your intuition now, but dont rely on facts or logic. Review or renegotiate business agreements when Mercury conjuncts Venus on the 6th, in 12 Pisces, Redecorate your work place to freshen things up. Get some intellectual or cultural stimulation. The ringed planet, Saturn, precisely sextiles distant Pluto on March 8th, reprising the same alignment from December 26th, only Saturn is now in retrograde. Nonetheless, this is a clear celestial augury that transformative forces are at work, and ones ambitions could in some way receive a significant boost, while self-improvement disciplines can be more effective under this momentous transit. Worldly progress and spiritual growth can dovetail beautifully together now. Profound events or revelations around this period could have a great impact on us all. This aspect will recur once more, on September 21st. Daylight Savings Time Begins at 2:00am on March 10th so remember to turn your clocks forward 1-hour. coming weeks, the quest for emotional and spiritual harmony and understanding could receive a higher priority, while creative artists find fresh inspiration. This is a good time to begin a dream diary. Mars entry into Aries later on March 11th provides a powerful stimulus to begin new projects during the next six weeks. The red planet in its fiery home sign engenders forceful self-expression, heightened competitiveness, and a driving urge to accomplish something...anything! After Mercury stations Direct on March 17th, in 06 Pisces, mental processes emerge from the fog and begin to accelerate. Any sudden bursts of inspired thought should be recorded for later reference. Move ahead with plans and projects now, but refrain from making snap decisions, as there's a tendency towards impatience and impulsive behavior. Nonetheless, communications are now getting back on track. Spring arrives with the vernal equinox on March 20th, as the sun makes its grand entrance into tropical Aries, where it will remain for the next thirty days, invigorating humankind, animal, and plant alike, prompting mother nature to spring into life, causing the sap to rise and new growth to begin in earnest. Spring is the season of initiation, pulsating with the vibrant energy and vigor of Marsthe ruler of Ariesand filled with the impetus for new beginnings. Venus leaves the water world of Pisces and joins the sun and Mars in fiery Aries on the 21st (till April 15th), when creative artistic pursuits are favored. Emotions are more aggressively expressed with Venus in this ardent sign, and new romantic ties may be impulsively entered into. Expect the unexpected when Mars conjuncts Uranus on March 22nd, as shocking revelations or events are possible around this period. Seize the initiative in business or career matters, though avoid acting rashly or rushing into new ventures or alliances without fully assessing all the ramifications. An easy-going sextile aspect involving Mars and expansive Jupiter sends positive and uplifting vibrations through the ethers on the 26th that may be harnessed for prac-

tical and constructive purposes. However, Mars also squares Pluto on the 26th, when a hair-trigger or short fuse tendency exists. Under this volatile alignment, potential exists for angry outbursts and accidents, so remain calm and in control of your actions. Ambition is aroused, and power struggles or intimidation may prevail. Sexual desires can also increase. However, with positive use, the intense energies of this transit may, in some creative way, enable you to completely transform an aspect of your world. March's full moon culminates on the 27th, in 07 Libra, with the sun closely conjunct Venus, Mars and Uranus. The need for selfexpression and space within relationships may seem of paramount importance, Anticipate emotional fireworks, as well as joyful exuberance, around this juncture. Show appreciation for those you love on the 28th when the sun conjuncts Venus, in 06 Aries. Social activities, the fine arts, and public relations are now well starred. Venus then conjuncts Uranus on the 28th, in 09 Aries, when business or social connections may be made, or severed, quite unexpectedly. The urge to socialize is strong now, so be sure to get out and network. With the sun making its annual conjunction with Uranus, planet of innovation, also on the 28th, investigate new technology or computer software, particularly to increase work efficiency. Revolutionize business or career strategies to incorporate new and improved methodologies. The sun makes a jarring square to Pluto on the 31st which, through events that may occur around this time, could provide an opportunity to transcend a behavior pattern that youve outgrown. Much inner strength and determination will be called for to properly channel these powerful, transformative energies. Be bold and go for it!

Aries

(March 20April 19)

With your ruling planet, Mars, in Pisces and your solar twelfth house throughout February you are encouraged to make some personal dreams and goals a reality before too long. Indeed, making plans for the future is a major theme at this time, so take the initiative and connect with friends or organizations that may be in a position to hasten your progress. Pay attention to your dreams, meditations, and intuition, as helpful hints and guidance can be gleaned from them. During March the pace of events in your life begins to quicken, particularly following Mars entry into Aries and your solar first house on the 11th. With the advent of spring on March 20th you will once again be in your element, and have all the energy and drive you will need to advance your ambitions. Youre keen to advance your career prospects in February, and not at all shy about blowing your own trumpet in order to get the attention of those in a position to help you to make a dream come true. The Aquarius new moon on the 9th lights up your solar tenth house of worldly ambition, attracting attention, opportunity, and perhaps plaudits to you in the weeks ahead. You will want to set new goals and raise the bar on your achievements as spring approaches, and to do so it may be necessary to reach out to friends and associations that can get you connected, and with whom you may possibly collaborate. Indeed, a new professional alliance is a distinct possibility in the near future and would certainly be to your advantage, particularly if it offers you access to resources or promotion that you could not obtain by your own efforts.

Taurus

(April 19May 20)

Significant others in your life may have something valuable to say in regard to setting new goals and planning for the future during February, so be open to their suggestions and feedback, as they only have your best interests at heart. While one major goal may be ensuring the security of both yourself and your family, and stabilizing your domestic situation, another key objective may be balancing your checkbook, to ensure that you have adequate resources to pursue your professional aspirations. Mutual business assets or jointly held funds could take center stage during March, when it may be necessary to reprioritize certain financial interests. Taking care of such matters when and should they arise will subsequently give you greater flexibility and the peace of mind with which to pursue your expansive plans for the future. Its fortunate that you enjoy being busy because you will likely have as much work as you can handle during February, when your services may be much in demand. Its nice to be wanted, but its even nicer when your talents and skills garner appreciation and plaudits from your peers and contemporaries, which might be the case this month. There could be a new partnership offer on the table for your consideration during March, one that may be a good fit for your skill-set and experience. You will be looking to expand your professional activities in any case throughout the spring, in search of new opportunities to advance your ambitions, and a wellconnected and capable partner or collaborator could only hasten your success! outgoing. Youve worked through a lot of personal issues these past couple of years, and now youre ready to embrace life to the fullest. Your enthusiasm and novel notions may attract admirers, and offers of work could come your way, so that without even trying, you also solve a cash flow problem, and now life is beginning to look a whole lot rosier. And all because youve opened up and said to the world, Im here! self-serving; rather, that youre seeking to be of service to your family, while advancing your personal ambitions in the process.

Aquarius

(January 19February 18)

Scorpio

(October 23November 22)

An increase in activities around your home are very likely the result of the winds of change that now begin to breathe new life into this important area. Your creative energies are flowing more freely and youre keen to find new avenues of selfexpression. Indeed, such activities can be very healing, after a period in which your creative muse felt stifled. You may have grown impatient with the lack of opportunity to further personal goals and ambitions. Now new doors almost magically open to you, in part, because of a subtle shift in your perceptions, which have allowed you to see yourself and your potential in a new light. Nurture your inner child through play and laughter, and watch your spirits soar!

You are primed and ready to pursue some personal ambitions that may have been elusive until now, when your drive and enthusiasm to improve your career prospects aligns nicely with opportunities that could open up for you quite by chance. Youre keen, too, to add to your income and this you may accomplish as well. Indeed, by the time spring arrives your financial status and prospects for the future may be looking a whole lot rosier! There may have been some underlying fears about your abilities or expectations that hitherto had been holding you back. Sagittarius

(November 21December 21)

Your cup runneth over with bright new ideas to improve your lot in life, fuelled in part by a subconscious desire for greater security, and awareness that you need a plan for the future. Friends and associates can provide you with valuable feedback and encouragement, so reach out to them whenever possible. There could be increased activity in and around your home, as you seek to make your nest more comfortable and perhaps more energy efficient. When it comes to savings and keeping to a budget your instincts and intuition could be right on the money! Likewise, you could also come up with a plan to significantly increase your revenue stream, or to get more mileage from your existing assets and resources.

If your dreams and meditations have been more vivid of late, it's because your subconscious is trying to guide you to new levels of personal achievement, and to encourage you to have more faith in your ability to be successful at whatever you set your mind to. You will have noticed, too, an increase in your energy levels and drive, so make good use of it by setting some new goals, then pursuing them with renewed enthusiasm and determination. The time is nigh to broaden your horizons, and to seek out new avenues of personal endeavor, with the knowledge that you already have the ability to be a winner, providing you remain focused on your goals. Trust your instincts to point you in the right direction, and in yourself to make them a reality.

Capricorn

The Four Elements

in your Dreams

By Kaya

he fundamental aspects of dream interpretation are based on the four elements: Fire, Air, Water and Earth. They are the structure of symbolic language and it is very important to understand them, to have them in mind when you interpret your dreams.

or a person who either sets things on fire or puts things into a fire negatively; such a person becomes aggressive or cultivates very powerful negative energy within himself, in his inner self. It is so extraordinary to learn about ourselves through dreams. We discover our deep intention, root and essence of who we are and how we manifest ourselves concretely or intentionally. Air is the element that refers to the world of thoughts. So if we see a plane, a bird, the wind, a mosquito, etc., we visit the situation related to the way we think, to the manifestation of our thoughts. It is important to understand that if we see a bird, the bird does not represent the intelligence of the thought but rather the force, the manifestation of it. Intelligence itself will be manifested in dreams by human behavior, books, etc. depending on what the message of the dream is. Or the bird in the dream can start talking, of course and this will increase the level of awareness of the thoughts of the dreamer.

F ir e is related to energy so any symbols or situations we see in dreams involving the notion of fire, or energy, or charisma also will be connected to how our energy behaves, manifests itself. For example, this archetype represented by fire can be connected in dreams to an animal that will run fast or too slow and not only the fact of seeing a fire in action. Anything in connection with energy will reveal how our vital energy is doing and this can show in many forms and situations to identify the energy level we have within ourselves, in our deep intentions. In its positive aspect, fire is also related to a warm presence, just as when this element is in its negative aspect, it can also be a person that has extremism in his energy,

EARTH STAR

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2013

Wa ter is a very common aspect of our dreams. I analyze a lot of dreams from all around the world and the subject of water is very often shown. Symbolically, water is in connection with our emotions. So any forms of symbols like fish, a boat, swimming, etc. will talk about how our emotions behave. When we see a tsunami, it is because we have accumulated within our soul, in our inner computer, a lot of memories with destructive emotions. A tsunami happens after tectonic activities have been set off; and these sorts of earth disturbances have been prepared over a hundred years or more. Symbolically then, they represent repressed forces, unhappiness, etc. deep within ourselves that have been accumulated in our inner depths for a very long time until CRACK! ...all of a sudden they can rise to the surface and create emotional destruction or destabilization. We can receive bad news or a phone call that reveals something we didnt know and then suddenly the unconsciousness triggers powerful negative emotions. I witnessed a tsunami in a Starbucks coffee shop yesterday. A real metaphysical tsunami! There was a couple that started to argue with each other. I could feel the woman was flooded and overwhelmed by emotions and she started to talk louder and louder and she was floating in the place with her negative emotions. This was a metaphysical tsunami, an emergence of ancient emotions coming from her unconscious. Most of the time when something like that happens, the person starts to say things from way back, worries, unhappiness, anger that is very old and has accumulated within for a very long time and remained unspoken. And now, all of a sudden, she brings everything to the surface. It is so interesting to understand the depth and the functioning of our unconscious, of our reservoir of memories inscribed in our inner computer. Ear th is the last of the four elements. It is an archetype that is connected to the world of actions. Anything we see on earth: a car, an animal that manifests on earth, a tree, etc., is in connection with how we interact and behave in our actions. In our dreams, when we go deep in the earth, like in archeology,

we discover in our dreams our ancient civilizations, our ancient way of being, of behaving, of manifesting. Knowing the four elements gives us the core, the basic, fundamental structure of dream interpretation because we always interact with these elements in our dreams. Indeed, most of the time we have a combination of elements in our dreams and nightmares. For instance, we can see a calm sea but simultaneously an aggressive eagle. Just the fact that the sea is calm while the eagle is aggressive will tell a lot about the personality of the dreamer. He will be a person that can become very controlling and dominating in his thoughts while simultaneously remaining emotionally stable. This sort of dream could reveal that the person has very strong, even extreme beliefs, and is so sure he is right, his emotions remain stable while he communicates his order, his way of seeing things. The eagle is the king of birds and is a symbol of power linked to the world of thoughts, to the air element. Of course, sometimes, when it behaves well, an eagle can be a very beautiful symbol in dreams. All symbols, like all the four elements can be positive or negative in a dream depending on how they act and behave. It is very important to remember this.

How To Interpret Dreams & Signs

By KAYA Kaya lived like a hermit for years, sometimes sleeping more than twenty hours a day to dream having as many as fifty dreams per night. Everyone thought he had gone crazy. Then one day, he started to share and write about his dream experiences. For years, in solitude, Kaya studied the dream symbols from every angle, like a mathematician trying to decode an enigma, only to realize that I was the real enigma. I had to understand my fears, my joys, and weaknesses that were appearing in the form of symbols, both in my dreams and in my daily life. I found one of the first keys the day I told myself, If everything I see and know can appear in my dreams, then physical and metaphysical worlds involve the same symbols. There was a code. o experience a Greater Community of life in the universe, and to enter into this great arena of life, we must first reconsider God. This is the Creator of all lifenot a God of the ancients; not a God of the great testaments from the past, but a God for all times and all races; not a human God; not a God that expresses our temperament and our judgments; not a God that requires worship; not a God of the tribe or the hill or the mountain or the sun or the stars, but a God beyond it alla God of a billion, billion races and more, so great beyond our comprehension. Yet how do we relate to a God like this, who is so vast and impersonal? As the New Revelation tells us, God speaks to the most sacred part of us, the permanent part of us,

through Knowledge within us. Therefore our relationship with God is of the greatest intimacy and relevancewithout intermediaries, speaking to us and to all races in the universe, who are so very different from us. The universe that we will now emerge into, our local region of space, is an environment that we know nothing about, for which we cannot prepare ourselves, which endangers us, but also encourages us to finally establish unity in the face of adversity. This has required a New Message from God, for none of Gods previous Revelations can prepare us for a reality on this scale, a non-human universe that is not governed by human values or ethics or human preoccupations. Now we stand at the threshold of this vast arena of life, on a world that is valued by others, a world that

we are destroying at a precipitous pace. Now we must grow up, end our ceaseless conflicts and our adolescent indulgences and prepare for this much more mature environment in order to secure human freedom and sovereignty in our world. For we are now the natives of the new world facing intervention, and as history has taught us, intervention is an extreme hazard to the native peoples. And yet we are unprepared. Therefore, God has spoken again to prepare us for life in the universe, to prepare us for our first encounters, to elevate us, one person at a time, one relationship at a time, everywhere in the world where people have access to the Revelation. This is the challenge of Revelation, for this is not merely a comfort and a consolation. It is not merely to remedy us from our daily stresses and difficulties, but to pull us out of the past by giving us something greater to do. God has given us the eyes to see, but we do not see. God has given us the ears to hear, but we do not hear preoccupied we are with our dilemmas, our preferences and our pursuit of happiness. But we still have the eyes to see and the ears to hear. And I pray that we will know and see. God does not care which religion we belong to, for there are billions of religions in the universe. God cares if we resonate to the power of Knowledge that has been

put within us, You can see that all religions are pathways to this Knowledge, and they can be rich avenues for us. But they know not of the Greater Community, which is the missing piece in the picture of our lives and in the future of our world and in the outcome for every one of us and our children and their children. The universe we will face will be a great challenge, the universe where freedom is rare and must be cultivated carefully and preserved against all the forces of intervention, seduction and persuasion. The wise know this, but we are not yet wise. Yet the Creator has put wisdom within us so that part of us is wise, and in this way we can respond to what is true, what is different and what is challenging because Knowledge within us has no fear. We are now facing intervention in the world by races here to gain influence and control for their own needs, presenting themselves as benign and speaking to our desire for wealth, power and spiritual fulfillment, having studied us for so long. We now as the natives of the new world must gain the wisdom that God has provided. For I tell you, people of Earth, without this wis-

dom, we would eventually succumbbeing too weak, too fractured, too ignorant, too selfish, too obsessed with our own ideologies, beliefs and national identities. We would succumb. God knows this. May the power and the presence of Knowledge become strong, within us and between us now, for we are living at the greatest time in history, and it is by no accident that we have come here now to be a part of this. Do not deny or disclaim this. Do not diminish yourself any further. You know not of your importance in this, for nothing else matters. God knows what matters for you and for us and for this world. We have the promise of being a free people in the universe, but it is only a promise and not an assurance. If humanity should fail at the doorstep of the universe, everything we have created that is good will be lost. And the possibility to regain our freedom will be remote. Do not look to others in the universe for gifts and technology. Do not fall prey to that seduction. Do not believe the statements offering power and peace and equanimity that those who are here claim, for they are here for much more mundane purposes, driven by the needs that drive us. Now the revelation given in Life in the Universe can inform us. It is not a universe of demons and angels, but of physical beings struggling to survive. God knows what is coming over the horizon and has given us the warning and the preparation. We are blessed

to receive this. Let us receive this gift not with our intellect, which only seeks to refer everything to the past and only to reassure itself that its ideas are true indeed, but to take this into our heart and our soul, where the deeper truth is known and remains beyond the realm and reach of the intellect. This Proclamation must go forth powerfully now. There is no more time. It is very late, and there is much to do.

High-Intensity Interval Training

and Intermittent Fasting

A Winning Combo for Fat Reduction and Optimal Fitness

By Dr. Joseph Mercola

f youre still not doing interval training, youre likely wasting an awful lot of time in the gym. This is one of the most important developments in fitness science that I can think of, as you can reap far greater health benefits in less time. But Ive recently also started talking about the potential health benefits of intermittent fasting and working out in a fasted state (i.e. skipping breakfast before hitting the gym). When you exercise while fasting, it essentially forces your body to shed fat, as your bodys fat burning processes are controlled by your sympathetic nervous system (SNS), and your SNS is activated by exercise and lack of food. The combination of fasting and exercising maximizes the impact of cellular factors and catalysts (cyclic AMP and AMP Kinases), which force the breakdown of fat and glycogen for energy.
www.earthstarmag.com

Evidence is indeed mounting in support of this strategy, and I believe it could be quite beneficial, provided youve already made some fundamental lifestyle changes with regards to diet and exercise. When combined, high-intensity exercise and intermittent fasting could very well be a winning strategy to bring your fitness to the next level. Keep in mind that fasting, or exercising in a fasted state, would be unwise if youre still eating a diet full of processed foods, so addressing your diet is absolutely crucial before you venture into any kind of fasting. Also, when undertaking any kind of calorie restriction, such as intermittent fasting or simply skipping breakfast, its critical to cut the right calories, namely carbohydrates (those from sugars and grains that is, NOT vegetable carbs).

Carb Restriction May Improve Performance in Elite Athletes

A recent study from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences1 shows that restricting carbohydrates can help burn calories more efficiently and increase muscle oxidative potential even in highly trained athletes. Ten elite level cyclists performed one hour of interval training at approximately 64 percent of maximal aerobic capacity with either low or normal muscle glycogen levels, achieved by prior exercise or diet intervention. Muscle biopsies were taken before and three hours after exercise. Results showed that exercising in a glyocogen depleted state increased mitochondrial biogenesis. (Mitochondrial biogenesis is the process by which new mitochondria are formed in your cells.) According to the authors: We conclude that exercise with low glycogen levels amplifies the expression of the major genetic marker for mitochondrial biogenesis in highly trained cyclists. The results suggest that low glycogen exercise may be beneficial for improving muscle oxidative capacity. Part of what makes working out in a fasted state so effective is that your body actually has a preservation mechanism that protects your active muscle from wasting itself. So if you dont have sufficient fuel in your system when you exercise, youre going to break down other tissues but not the active muscle, i.e. the muscle being exercised.

According to fitness expert Ori Hofmekler, author of The Warrior Diet, you can quite literally re-design your physique using a combination of under-eating and exercise. However this really only works well once youve become fat-adapted, meaning your metabolism has become proficient at burning fat. To learn more about this, please see my other recent article on this topic, What Does it Mean to Be Fat-Adapted?

Interval Training Burns More Calories in Less Time

In related news, research presented at the Integrative Biology of Exercise VI meeting2 in Colorado on October 10-13 this year, demonstrated that high-intensity interval training burns more calories in less time a mere 2.5 minutes, divided into five 30-second sprint intervals at maximum exertion, each followed by four minutes of light pedaling to recuperate, can burn as much as 220 calories. All in all, in less than 25 minutes total, you can burn more calories than you would if you were cycling at a moderate pace for half an hour. According to lead researcher, exercise physiology graduate student Kyle Sevits:3 You burn a lot of calories in a very short time... Nearly all the calories are burned in those 2.5 minutes; you burn very few during the rest period. He also points to additional benefits that come from interval training, including increased insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, both of which are important for overall good health. High-intensity interval training, which is part of my total Peak Fitness program, has also been shown to pro-

I use and recommend the program developed by Phil Campbell, which will trigger HGH production as you go all out during the exertion phase. Heres a summary of what a typical interval routine might look like using an elliptical: Warm up for three minutes. Exercise as hard and fast as you can for 30 seconds. You should be gasping for breath and feel like you couldnt possibly go on another few seconds. It is better to use lower resistance and higher repetitions to increase your heart rate. Recover for 90 seconds, still moving, but at slower pace and decreased resistance. Repeat the high-intensity exercise and recovery 7 more times. When youre first starting out, depending on your level of fitness, you may only be able to do two or three repetitions of the high-intensity intervals. As you get fitter, just keep adding repetitions until youre doing eight during your 20-minute session. Once you regularly incorporate these 20-minute exercises about twice a week, most people notice the following benefits: Decrease in body fat Improved muscle tone Improved athletic speed and performance Ability to achieve your fitness goals much faster Increase in energy and sexual desire Firmer skin and reduced wrinkles

duce greater health benefits overall than conventional aerobic training. Back in April, I reported on a study that found doing just three minutes of high-intensity training per week for four weeks, could lead to significant changes in important health indices, including a 24 percent improvement in insulin sensitivity. Another important benefit of high-intensity interval training is its ability to naturally increase your bodys production of human growth hormone (HGH), also known as the fitness hormone. HGH is a synergistic, foundational biochemical underpinning that promotes muscle and effectively burns excessive fat. It also plays an important part in promoting overall health and longevity. This is something you cannot get from conventional, aerobic endurance training.

How to Maximize the Health Benefits of Peak Fitness Training

While its theoretically possible to reap valuable results with as little as three minutes (plus rest periods in between spurts) once a week, it would be more beneficial doing them two or three times a week for a total of four minutes of intense exertion per session, especially if you are not doing strength training. You do not need to do high-intensity exercises more often than that however. In fact, doing it more frequently than two or three times a week can be counterproductive, as your body needs to recover between sessions. Intensity is KEY for reaping all the benefits interval training can offer. To perform it correctly, youll want to raise your heart rate to your anaerobic threshold, and to do that, you have to give it your all for those 20 to 30 second intervals. Different studies will use different intervals of exertion and recuperation. For example, in the featured study on elite athletes, bouts of exertion were separated by four-minute rest intervals. They also didnt max out during the exertion phase.

Exercise is Key for Reducing Body Fat While Preserving Your Muscle
Ive frequently stated that 80 percent of the health benefits you reap from a healthy lifestyle come from your diet, and the remaining 20 percent from exercise.

However, its important to realize that there is a profound synergy between the two, as yet another recent study demonstrates. The researchers examined data from 11 participants in the reality TV show The Biggest Loser. Total body fat, total energy expenditure, and resting metabolic rate were measured three times: at the start of the program, six weeks into the program, and at week 30, which was at least four months after participants returned home. Using a mathematical computer model of human metabolism, the researchers calculated the impact of the diet and exercise changes resulting in weight loss, to evaluate the relative contributions of each. Interestingly, while diet alone was calculated to be responsible for more weight loss overall than exercise, only 65 percent of that weight loss was body fat. The remaining 35 percent reduction in total body weight was a reduction in lean muscle mass. Exercise alone resulted in fat loss only, along with a small increase in lean muscle mass. According to the National Institutes of Health press release:4 The simulations also suggest that the participants could sustain their weight loss and avoid weight regain by adopting more moderate lifestyle changes like 20 minutes of daily vigorous exercise and a 20 percent calorie restriction than those demonstrated on the television program.

doesnt then it is best to reevaluate your strategy. Make sure to keep the following two points in mind: 1. Timing of meals: Intermittent fasting is not extreme calorie restriction. Youre not supposed to starve yourself. Rather its simply a matter of timing your meals properly by abstaining from food during much of the day, and limiting your eating to a small window later in the evening. If you were to limit eating to say 4-7 pm, you are effectively fasting for 21 hours. Ideally, youll want to fast for at least 12-18 hours. 2. If you cant abstain from food entirely during the day, limit it to small servings of light, low-glycemic, mostly raw foods such as fruits, vegetables, whey protein or lightly poached eggs every 4-6 hours. Whatever times you choose, it will be very helpful to avoid having any food or calories for three hours prior to going to bed as this will minimize oxidative damage to your system and give your body a major jumpstart in intermittent fasting.

Break your fast with a recovery meal on workout days:

On the days that you work out while fasting, you need to consume a recovery meal 30 minutes after your workout. Fast-assimilating whey protein is ideal. Then fast again until you eat your main meal at night. Its very important that you eat an appropriate recovery meal after your workout session, as this will prevent brain and muscle damage from occurring, so do NOT skip this meal. If the thought of fasting for 12-18 hours is too much, you can get many of the same benefits of fasting and exercise by simply skipping breakfast and exercising first thing in the morning when your stomach is empty. This is because eating a full meal, particularly carbohydrates, before your workout will inhibit your sympathetic nervous system and reduce the fat burning effect of your exercise. Instead, eating lots of carbs activates your parasympathetic nervous system, (which promotes energy storage the complete opposite of what youre aiming for).

Tips for Fasting and Exercising Safely: A Post-Workout Recovery Meal is Crucial
An effective exercise program that incorporates highintensity interval training combined with intermittent fasting can help counteract muscle aging and wasting, and boost fat-burning. If at any point you dont have enough energy or dont feel good, then it is likely time to shift your experiment and reduce the hours of fasting. Intermittent fasting should make you feel better, and if it

Archetypes

By Carolyn Myss

f I said to you, See that man over there? Hes my Hero, or That woman is the Perfect Mom, I know without a doubt that you would understand exactly what I was communicating to you about two people you had never met. With just three wordsHero and Perfect MomI would have awakened in you two complete archives of myths and symbols that you automatically associate with those terms. In seconds, these two people would cease to be strangers, as your psyche wrapped them in stories, fairy tales, and your own memories. The man would instantly take on the appearance of a super-strong Hero able to face any adversary. Despite knowing nothing else about him, you would instantly trust him. After all, Heroes dont betray the women theyre sent to rescueat least not in the fairy tales we know and love, right? Consider the archetype of the Perfect Mom. You dont need to meet the woman Im speaking about to flesh out an idea of her in your imagination. The words Perfect Mom pack a powerful punch, especially in our society, where we have commercially enhanced this archetype beyond its already deeply rooted sentimental meaning. The instant someone tells you that a woman is

a Perfect Mom, you immediately picture a great cook with a charming, well-ordered home, who helps her kids with their homework, attends all their sporting events, listens to their problems, hosts sleepovers with their friendsand bakes brownies. Even if the words Perfect Mom bring up painful associations with a not-so-perfect upbringing, you still have the projection of the ideal Mother figure firmly planted in your psyche. So how do those wordsHero and Perfect Mom communicate so much visual, emotional, intellectual, and mythic information to us? They carry the power they do because they are archetypes, psychic power patterns in the unconscious mind. Although archetypes are collective symbols that everyone in the culture shares, they can also speak to us individually, as personal archetypal patterns that are the foundation of our beliefs, drives, motivations, and actions, organizing and energizing all our relationships in life. Archetypes are the power images we identify with as children. The Athlete or the Artist or the Actor or the Princess or even, sad to say, the Victim or the Vampire represents a complex of stories and myths that we somehow imagine happening in our own life. We are drawn to movies, books, and video

games with characters that represent our power images. Little girls dress up as Princesses and Wonder Woman, little boys as Batman and Warriors. Archetypal identification begins early. The ten archetypal patterns that reflect the power trends of our times are: the Advocate, the Artist/Creative, the Athlete, the Caregiver, the Fashionista, the Intellectual, the Queen/Executive, the Rebel, the Spiritual Seeker, and the Visionary. They all embody the primary power issues that define women today, including their underlying struggles with personal empowerment. Ten years ago, the list of defining archetypes would have been different, and it may change again ten years from now. But in the world as we know it today, the modern woman is likely to consider herself a Professional, or if not a Professional then someone looking for her place in the world. Todays woman is also likely to see herself as a Caregiver, whether or not she is a mother. Her Caregiver may have a rebellious streak, simply by virtue of adapting to life in a world so vastly different from the one in which previous generations of women lived, or she may be a woman in whom the Rebel is a full-time force. In addition to reflecting contemporary power themes, the ten archetypes embody the more pressing personal challenges facing women today. Women in particular face the challenge of developing an inner sense of power and personal identity. Without that essential core of self-esteem, you will be unable to hear your intuitive guidance. You wont trust the Intellectual in you as it engages with new ideas. You will tune out the Fashionista archetype when it sprinkles your imagination with ideas about creating a new line of clothing or jewelry. You will dismiss the intuitive instructions or suggestions as if they were a bad dream, with a thought like I could never do that. What if I fail? or some other excuse coming from low self-esteem. Few forces in life have the positive authority of genuine self-esteem, or the negative effect of a lack of self-esteem.

Archetypal patterns filter into every aspect of your life. Your archetypes influence your spending habits, how you shop, and what you buy or not. They influence the quality of your relationships, and who you are attracted to and why. And they influence recurring issues: arguments you seem to have over and over, difficulties at work that keep cropping up, and other patterns that repeat themselves. Anything that repeats is a clue to what archetypes are operating in your life. You identify your archetypes in your stories, your patterns, your fears, your talentsall the things that are constant in your nature. What would you say is typical of you? How do other people describe you? (If youre up for it, ask your friends for help with this. You would be surprised by what you can learn about yourself.) The more you know about how archetypes work, the more easily you can observe their influence on your thoughts, your attitudes, your behavior, and your personal myths and symbols. Once you connect with an archetype that you know is genuinely you, it will inspire you to find out about other archetypes that may be influencing your life. Connecting with an archetype is a bridge to your true Self, to who you really are. You are far more than your personality, more than your habits, more than your achievements. You are an infinitely complex human being with stories and myths and dreamsand ambitions of cosmic proportions. Dont waste time underestimating yourself. Dream big. Use your archetypes. If youre an Artist, make art. If youre a Visionary, imagine something the future needs, then join forces with an Entrepreneur to make a venture out of it. Use the energy of your archetype to express the true reason you were born. Life was never meant to be safe. It was meant to be lived right to the end. There are inner riches awaiting you in the archetypal domain. Life is an archetypal magic carpet ride through endless adventures meant to teach us about the hidden truths of life and our place in the cosmic scheme.

1 0 Cancer Fighting Supplements

Your Doctor May Not Tell You About

1. CoQ10

utrition plays an important role in every stage of the fight against cancer: resisting it, suppressing its development and reducing its spread. Many nutrients are involved, and most are available as supplements. Vitamins and minerals are certainly important, but so are all sorts of plant compounds, friendly bacteria and specialized fats, like omega-3 fatty acids. If youre serious about preventing cancer, here are some of the supplements you should consider taking:

This natural energy-producer and powerful antioxidant is proving to be an important cancer fighter. New research has found that CoQ10 is helpful for colon cancer, breast cancer and melanoma. Animals
www.earthstarmag.com

exposed to cancer-causing agents who are pretreated with CoQ10 are less likely to develop cancer because CoQ10 help to neutralize toxins. During cancer treatment, CoQ10 not only preserves immune function, it seems to help cancer drugs work better. And after treatment, CoQ10 helps the immune system attack any remaining cancer cells, reducing the risk for new growth and spread. CoQ10 is used extensively in Japan as an adjuvant for cancer treatment. Its safety record is unparalleled at virtually any dose. What to Take: We recommend 200 600 mg of CoQ10 a day.

2. Probiotics
These friendly bacteria can decrease fecal enzymes associated with formation of cancercausing compounds in the intestines. They can bind to substances that cause genetic

mutations to intestinal cells. They stimulate enzymes that inactivate cancer-causing substances. Probiotics can also help support and stimulate the immune system indirectly and directly throughout the body, which is why theyve been linked to a reduced risk for cancers other than colon cancer, such as bladder cancer. What to Take: We recommend a shelf-stable probiotic with 10 billion CFU (colony-forming units) count per dose.

5. Resveratrol
This powerful anti-aging nutrient helps to preserve normal cell cycle regulation, which is an important function in dealing with DNA damage. If cell cycle regulation is defective, mutations in the cells DNA may result in cancer. Resveratrol has been found to induce cell cycle arrest for a time following DNA damage, in order to allow for DNA repair or activation of processes leading to cell death, should the damage be irreparable. Resveratrol also helps to regulate enzymes. It upregulates certain enzymes that break down toxic substances in the body, so it promotes the excretion of these harmful chemicals. What to Take: We recommend about 400 mg a day of standardized trans-resveratrol.

3. Prebiotics
Think of prebiotics as food and housing for probiotics. These are nutritional substances such as inulin, a soluble fiber, that help probiotics grow and colonize inside your intestines. In one study, volunteers were fed a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics, or placebo, for eight weeks. A wide range of indicators of colon cancer risk were measured. Those taking the probiotics with prebiotics had less DNA damage and a lower rate of cell proliferation in biopsies taken from their colons. They also had lower levels of cancer-causing mutagens in their feces. What to Take: Look for a probiotic supplement that includes prebiotics in addition to beneficial bacteria.

6. Vitamin D
New research suggests that having an optimal blood level of vitamin D could cut your cancer risk by as much as 60%! Vitamin D can help activate certain proteins that suppress tumor growth and development, and help prevent as many as 16 different types of cancer, including lung, pancreas, breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Vitamin D increases the self-destruction of mutated cells, reduces the spread and reproduction of cancer cells, and reduces the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones, an important step in the growth and spread of cancerous tumors. Research shows 40-70% of Americans have suboptimal blood levels of vitamin D. The best way to figure out how much you need is to get a blood test, before and after you have started taking supplements. What to Take: Some people need 2,000 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day, or even more, to stay at a good blood level of to 40 to 60 ng/mL (100 150 nmol/L).

4. Beta Glucan
These chains of sugar molecules have the ability to enhance your immune system and help it to attack cancer cells. Beta glucan is most often derived from the cell walls of bakers yeast, or from mushrooms such a shiitake and maitake. In Japan, extracts containing various types of beta glucan have been used to successfully assist in treating cancer patients for the last 20 years. Beta glucan seems to have the unique ability to stick to cancer cells and tag them to make it easier for the immune system to recognize the cancer cells as foreign invaders that need to be destroyed. Beta glucan does provide some immune system boost on its own, but it seems to work best when used along with other forms of cancer therapy, such as monoclonal antibodies or interferon. What to Take: We recommend about 100 mg a day of Beta 1,3/1,6 D-glucan, a form proven effective at stimulating immunity.

tea, EGCG, slows blood vessel formation in tumors, reducing the rate at which they can grow and spread. Like resveratrol, green tea extract can also regulate cell division and growth, and cause programmed cell death in DNA-damaged cells. Some of the cancers that green tea can face down include prostate, esophageal, bladder, cervical, pancreatic, ovarian, lymphoma and leukemia. Green tea is also active against human papilloma virus (HPV) a sexually transmitted virus associated with cervical and anal cancer and warts. What to Take: We recommend about 450 mg a day of a standardized green tea extract.

cell death and inhibits new blood vessel growth into tumors. It seems to work best against colon cancer, and in some animal studies, was as good as certain chemotherapy drugs at inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. What to Take: Dosages up to 8,000 mg a day for three months have been used with no toxicity.

Greater intake of omega-3s has been associated with a reduced risk for cancer. By helping to stabilize the immune system, fish oil may have multiple anti-cancer effects, including regulating cell proliferation, inducing damaged cells to die, preventing blood vessel growth in tumors and helping to prevent the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body. MRI Could Solve Cellphone Radiation Problems

ears of studies to determine whether cellphones can cause brain tumors have yielded one popular consensus: More studies are needed. One important piece that has

been missing from researchers arsenals is a way to see what happens to cellphone radiation that is absorbed by the human brain. Two scientists have now developed a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that they say could solve that problem. This could be an important tool for researchers who are trying to discover whether extensive cellphone use can cause brain tumors or other health problems.

The technique creates high-resolution 3-D images of the heat created by cellphone radiation absorbed in the brain. In research reported recently in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the scientists demonstrate the method on cow brain matter and a gel that emulates brain tissue. But the procedure could easily be adapted for tests on human brains, says David Gultekin, a medical physicist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, in New York, who led the development of the technique. The

By James D. Stein, Ph.D.

t was later discovered that the Butterfly Effect is pervasiveand applies to gravitational phenomena as well. We mentioned earlier that it is impossible to predict on which side of the Sun Pluto will be thousands of years from now and our solar system is relatively simple, considering that we only have one Sun and the masses of the planets are small in comparison. One can imagine a system with so many stars that it is simply impossible to predict where a planet will be some time later, and without the ability to confirm predictions it would be impossible to substantiate a Theory of Universal Gravitation. That does not mean that scientists living in such a system might not come up with the Theory of Universal Gravitationafter all, they might make a lucky guess. Think about it. One of the reasons that we were able to deduce the Theory of Universal Gravitation is that the Earth follows essentially the same path around the Sun, year after year after year. This doesnt happen on the Nightfall planet (Nightfall is a famous science-fiction short story written by Isaac Asimov, right)but the

planet does follow an orbit sufficiently regular that its scientists were able to deduce the Theory of Universal Gravitation. The scientists on our hypothetical planet, the one with so many stars that the orbit is basically unpredictable, would in all likelihood never be able to work out the underlying simple law that is the Theory of Universal Gravitation. Even if they could, they could never confirm it. But now we come to the crux of the matter. Just

because gravitation appears to be a supernatural phenomenon to scientists living in an environment where the Butterfly Effect would make it impossible to predict how gravity behaves does not mean that gravitation is a supernatural phenomenon. In fact, we here on Earth know it isnt (as do the scientists on the Nightfall planet). And therein lies the problem for usand it is a problem which investigators of the supernatural have recognized for some time. Just because we cannot explain a phenomenon, or even if we can never explain the phenomenon, does not mean we are dealing with the supernatural. There may well be an underlying simpleand perfectly naturalexplanation for the phenomenon, consistent with natural laws that we have not yet discovered, or, in fact, may never discover. One can imagine debates on our imagined planet, the one with so many stars that it is impossible to predict where celestial objects will be. Philosophers, scientists, and religious figures could argue whether sunrises, sunsets, and eclipses are natural or supernatural phenomena. The scientists on our imaginary planet may indeed be able to make an educated guess about the Law of Universal Gravitation. Coulombs Law, which is the law that relates the electric force between two electrically charged objects, turns out to have exactly the same mathematical form as Newtons Law of Universal grav-

itation. The only difference between the two formulas is that Newtons Law uses the letters m1 and m2 to denote the two masses; Coulombs Law has the letters q1 and q2 instead to denote the two electrical charges. Other than that, the two Laws have exactly the same formula! In fact, it is probable that Coulomb knew the form for Newtons Law and used that form to hypothesize the law governing electric charge. It would not be a wild leap for a scientist on our imaginary planet, assuming that they have discovered Coulombs Law, to conjecture that the Law of Gravitation has a similar form. Nonetheless, they may not get around to this approach, and unless they are able to travel to a system where gravitation is a simple phenomenon, they may erroneously classify gravitation as supernatural. How can we be sure that we are not making the same mistake for different types of phenomena? So we now have a natural lawthe Theory of Universal Gravitationwhich was discovered with much effort on Earth, even more effort on the Nightfall

planet, but which is essentially undiscoverable on the planet where the Butterfly Effect renders it undiscoverable. But even though there are (hypothetical) planets where it would be impossible to discover the Theory of Universal Gravitation, that Theory nevertheless exists. Theres a slight linguistic problem here concerning whether the Theory is the way gravity actually is or the way that we describe how gravity actually is. There is gravity, there is Newtons Theory of Universal Gravitation, and there is Einsteins Theory of Relativity. We are obviously producing ever more accurate descriptions of gravitycan we be certain that at the moment we have a description of gravity that tells us exactly how it is? Possibly there is an ultimate Theory of Universal Gravitation to which Newtons Law was an excellent first approximation and Einsteins Theory of Relativity a distinctly superior modificationbut we still havent found it. Nonetheless, both Newtons and Einsteins

theories are classified as scientific laws. A scientific law doesnt have to be a perfect description, but it has to work extremely well and extremely often. Here, however, is the $64,000 questionat least as it pertains to this book. Is there a natural law out there which cannot be discovered? There is a point to phrasing the previous sentence in the passive voice. Had I said, Is there a natural law which we cannot discover? there might be the inference that were just not bright enough to plumb the ultimate secrets of the Universe. But a law which is a law but which cannot be discovered would legitimately be supernatural. It would be a principle governing behavior in the Universe which would be beyond our ability, or the ability of any sentient creature, to discover.

And thats what I will claim in this book. There are hypotheses about the physical Universe which I claim result in lawsgoverning principleswhich cannot be discovered; by us or by any sentient creature. If you look at the strict dictionary meaning of super as it comes from the Latin, it means above or beyond. I would argue that governing principles in the Universe that lie beyond the ability of scienceany scienceto discover are supernatural. In the literal sense, it fits the definition of supernatural; far more so than alien abductions or strange doings in the Bermuda Triangle. I cant see why it wouldnt fit your definition of supernatural as well.

Has Your CoQ10 Become Obsolete ?

By William Faloon

wenty four years ago, the Life Extension Foundation introduced coenzyme Q10 to the United States. Back then, it was sold in Japan as a prescription drug to treat heart disease. Life Extension, however, provided persuasive evidence that CoQ10 could help protect against a host of age-related disorders.Based on a large volume of favorable research, CoQ10 has become one of todays most popular dietary supplements. In recent years, new delivery systems have been developed that transport more CoQ10 into the bloodstream than original versions. Providing greater quantities of CoQ10 to the body is of particular importance, since scientific studies show that higher CoQ10 blood levels produce superior benefits. In what may be the most significant breakthrough in the history of the dietary supplement industry, Japans largest CoQ10 producer has discovered a way to deliver

the highest concentrations of the most biologically active form of coenzyme Q10 to the bloodstream. As you will read in this article, this improved form of CoQ10 not only absorbs up to eight times better, but also has demonstrated unprecedented anti-aging effects compared to placebo and compared to the coenzyme Q10 you are using now. Unlike outrageously priced prescription drugs, this new form of CoQ10 enables consumers to obtain more activated coenzyme Q10 in their bodies at a far lower cost. Based on the findings you are about to read, this novel CoQ10 compound (ubiquinol) could revolutionize how a number of age-related disorders are both prevented and treated. Scientists long ago discovered that orally ingesting the ubiquinone form of coenzyme Q10 produced beneficial effects on the heart, brain, kidneys, and other tissues.

What the lay literature did not discuss was the fact that in order for the ubiquinone form of CoQ10 to be properly utilized, it first must be reduced in the body to its active metabolite known as ubiquinol. While most ubiquinone is naturally reduced to ubiquinol, the optimal way to supplement with CoQ10 would be to ingest it in its ready-to-use ubiquinol form. Since ubiquinol is highly unstable, it has been extremely difficult (until now) to make it available as a dietary supplement. After years of painstaking research, Japans largest producer of coenzyme Q10 has developed a patented method to stabilize ubiquinol so that it can be swallowed in a capsule for utilization by cells throughout the body. The ramifications of widespread use of this novel form of CoQ10 are profound. For the first time, it may be possible to achieve the sustained high blood levels of biologically active ubiquinol CoQ10 needed to delay certain manifestations of aging and its related disorders.

impressive.

What Makes Ubiquinol Different From Ubiquinone?

Coenzyme Q10 exists in both ubiquinol and ubiquinone forms, but they have vastly different roles to play in the body. For instance, ubiquinol is an electron donor, while ubiquinone is an electron acceptor. The electrons that ubiquinol donates neutralize free radicals. This fact alone makes ubiquinol the form of CoQ10 that protects against toxic oxidative reactions in the body. The chemical difference between ubiquinone and ubiquinol is that the ubiquinol compound contains two hydroxyl groups. These two hydroxyl groups enable ubiquinol to be more hydrophilic than ubiquinone, and thus much easier to assimilate. The term hydrophilic means readily absorbable or dissolvable in water. The two hydroxyl groups on the ubiquinol compound result in its stronger bonding with water, which helps explain why it is so much more bioavailable than ubiquinone. Todays commercial CoQ10 supplements contain ubiquinone because it remains stable longer in the capsule. However, it is the reduced form of CoQ10 (ubiquinol) that has the ability to scavenge free radicals in mitochondria and in cell membranes, sites where free radicals inflict significant damage. The ubiquinol form of CoQ10, with its two hydroxyl groups, is what dominates in most human tissues. Called a coenzyme because of its unique ability to participate in chemical reactions but remain at steadystate levels in the cell, coenzyme Q10 plays a central role in energy metabolism. CoQ10s ability to cycle back and forth between ubiquinone and ubiquinol accounts for many of its unique properties. This remarkable ability to cyclically accept and donate electrons, as well as to effect complementary chemical reactions in the mitochondria, accounts for CoQ10s unparalleled value to almost all life forms. Ubiquinol has a much greater bioavailability than the ubiquinone used in commercially available CoQ10 supplements. This is understandable, since ubiquinol has far greater water solubility and much better absorption into the bloodstream

Sharply Higher Absorption Levels

Even with todays enhanced delivery systems, achieving optimal blood levels of CoQ10 can be challenging. Those suffering from disorders that require higher blood levels have had to consume relatively large doses of CoQ10. Ideal blood levels for those afflicted with neurological disorders (such as Parkinsons disease) or congestive heart failure are considered to be greater than 3.5 micrograms per milliliter (mcg/mL). When CoQ10 is ingested in its reduced form as ubiquinol, higher blood CoQ10 levels can be achieved using smaller milligram doses. In assimilation studies on rats, oral feeding of ubiquinol CoQ10 was shown to increase blood levels more than twice as high as conventional CoQ10 (ubiquinone). Human assimilation studies are even more

Ubiquinols Effect On Mitochondrial Function

In healthy human blood, more than 90% of coenzyme Q10 exists in its reduced ubiquinol form. An analysis of published research indicates that ubiquinol is the form of CoQ10 that most effectively suppresses free radicals and increases mitochondrial energy output. hydrophilic (that is, less capable of dissolving in fats), it would theoretically tend to be less retained in cell membranes, while achieving more significant intracellular concentrations. This may offer a plausible mechanism whereby ubiquinol might accumulate more effectively within mitochondria than exogenous ubiquinone, thereby exerting a greater contribution to mitochondrial energy production. Scientists are still seeking to identify the exact mechanisms by which ubiquinol so effectively enhances mitochondrial function. The ability of ubiquinol to remain at constantly higher levels in the bloodstream is one likely reason why it has demonstrated such remarkable anti-aging effects compared to ubiquinone.

Are You Using Knowledge or is Knowledge Using You?

By don Miguel Ruiz Jr.

began my apprenticeship into my familys tradition in San Diego, California, when I was fourteen years old. My seventy-nine-year-old grandmother, Madre Sarita, was my teacher and the spiritual head of our family. She was a curandera, a faith healer who helped people in her small temple in Barrio Logan, a neighborhood in San Diego, with the power of her faith in God and love. Since my father was a medical doctor, the juxtaposition of the two forms of healing allowed me to see our tradition through different points of view. Though she spoke no English, my grandmother gave sermons and lectures across the country. My apprenticeship began with translating my grandmothers lectures from Spanish to English. For many years, I awkwardly stumbled over her words, and my grandmother would just look at me and laugh. One day, she asked me if I knew why I stumbled. I had all sorts of answers: you are speaking too quickly, you dont give me a chance to catch up, some words

dont have a direct translation. . . . She just looked at me silently for a few moments and then asked, Are you using knowledge, or is knowledge using you? I looked at her blankly. She continued, When you translate, you try to express my words through what you already know, what you think is true. You do not hear me; you hear yourself. Imagine doing the same thing every single moment in life. If you are looking through life and translating it as it goes along, you will miss out on living it. But if you learn to listen to life, you will always be able to express the words as they come. Your knowledge has to become a tool that you will use to guide you through life but that can also be put aside,. Do not let knowledge translate everything you experience. I nodded in response, but it didnt dawn on me until many years later what my grandmother was truly talking about. Throughout life, we constantly narrate, or commentate on, everything we do, say, see, touch, smell, taste, and hear. As natural storytellers, we continuously

every single word she said accurately. Seeing beyond our filtersour accumulated knowledge and beliefsdoes not always come naturally. We have spent years growing attached to them in various degrees, and they feel safe. Whatever we become attached to can begin to shape our future experiences and limit our perception of what exists outside our vocabulary. Like blinders on a horse, our attached beliefs limit our vision, and this in turn limits our perceived direction in life. The stronger our level of attachment, the less we can see. Think about your set of attached beliefs as a unique melody repeating itself in your mind. In a way, we are constantly trying to force our melodythe one we have become accustomed to hearingonto other melodies, without realizing that often the melody is not our own, and perhaps its not even the one we want to be playing. If we continue playing only what we know, never opening ourselves to listen to the other songs flowing around us, we are letting our attachment to our particular melody control us. Instead, choose to listen to other melodies playing. Perhaps you will contribute to them, adding a harmony or a bass line and just seeing where the music takes you. By letting go of your attachment to what you think the melody should be, you open yourself to the potential to create a unique and beautiful song of your own composition or a collaboration that can be shared with others.

keep the plot moving forward, sometimes missing millions of subplots that are developing on their own. It is like taking a sip of wine and saying, Its a bit dry; it has definitely aged well, but I can taste the bark. Ive had better. Instead of simply experiencing the joy and flavors of the wine, we are analyzing the flavor, trying to break it down and fit it into a context and language we already know. In doing this, we miss out on much of the actual experience. This is a simple example of how we narrate life explaining it, but, more importantly, justifying and judging it. Instead of taking an experience for what it is, we create a story to make it fit our beliefs. During Madre Saritas talks, I had to completely shut down my thoughts, because if my minds commentary got in the way, I would miss out on her message. With this simple process, my grandmother showed me that if we only see the world through the filters of our preconceptions, we are going to miss out on actually living. After much practice, I eventually learned to close my eyes, shut out the world that existed outside my head, and translate

How to Use

C r ystals and Stones

By Margaret Ann Lembo

s a young girl, I collected all types of rocks alongside my collection of seashells. I also had the good fortune to have a family friend who introduced me to the magic of believing and the power of positive thought when I was very young. I learned that the power of your imagination and visualization can help you achieve great things. These tools I wish to pass on to you. Visualization is when you use your imagination to mentally see something even though it is not in front of you. Visualizing is making a mental picture or creating images in your mind. I call them tools because I look at them like tools in a toolbox. The tools include: Good thoughts Looking at things in a positive way Pretty crystals, rocks, stones and metals A vivid imagination The ability to visualize The magic of believing that anything is possible. The willingness to try, because you wont know if you dont try.

To use the tools from your tool box, start by thinking a positive thought like, I am smart or I can do anything or It is easy for me to make friends or I am safe and happy. Next, pick up a stone, any stone you like. Hold it in your hand, put it in your pocket or keep in nearby to help you remember to think that good thought. The stone magnifies the thought, making it stronger. Every time you see or touch the stone it will help you maintain your focus on what you do want. It will keep you from thinking about what you dont want, or things that you might be afraid of. Keep your attention on the good thought so it replaces any thoughts that are the opposite of what you want. Visualize and make believe that whatever you want already exists. And take the action to make it your intention. It is important to have an intention and to focus on the positive so that life reflects your highest potential. Everything that is created is created through intention. We create our lives with our thoughts, actions, words and deeds. Our intentions vibrate out into the world and return to us in the form of our personal reality. When a gemstone is paired with a daily affirmation, the stone amplifies that intention. It is a tool that helps you maintain your focus on what you do want. What is your plan? What do you want?

bookstores and rock shops. The words crystals, minerals, and stones are often used as synonyms throughout the book. When you go to a store or out into nature to get your stones, start by thinking about what you want to use the stone for (your intention). Do you want the stone to help you with your studies and to get better grades? Or perhaps you want to feel better about yourself? Perhaps you want to feel better about making friends or how your friends and family treat you? You can use a stone to help you with any part of your life. You can use it to help you with your thoughts (mental), feelings (emotional), body (physical) or your connection with the angels, nature spirits and Spirit (spiritual). Keep focused on your intention, then start looking at the various choices of stones. You can look at the pictures within this book (without reading about the stone first) to see which stone attracts you. You can also go to your local rock shop or metaphysical store to browse through the choices of crystals and stones available. You will be naturally drawn to what you need. Its best to wait until you have chosen the stones before you look up what the stone is good for. Use the positive thought affirmations in this book with the stone you choose. You can also make up your own affirmations to help you through your day.

So, how do I use the stones?

Establish your intention. Now, stop and list three thingsthree intentionsyou would like to have happen! It is simple to change your mind and change your thoughts. For example, just as you decide you want a glass of water, you start to think about and imagine, visualize, and then take the action to get that glass of water. Anything you want to achieve in your life is no different or more complicated than getting yourself a glass of water. Simply think of the steps you need to take to achieve your goal, then take the action to make it so and you will find it easily happens it is as simple as getting a glass of water for yourself. Using the stones is easy. Simply hold them in your hand and remember your intention. That way you link that intention to the stone(s). Then carry them in your pocket, place them under your pillow at night, place them on your bed stand, use them any way you like, just so that whenever you touch or see that stone you will be reminded of your intention. Use your imagination, visualize the end result as if your challenge is already better, and remember to stay focused on what you do want rather than what you dont want!

So, how do I pick a stone?

Go to the store or outside in your backyard and just pick one! Dont read about them first, just pick a stone, any stone. You dont need a lot of money to use the tools and techniques offered in this book. The stones within this book are easily found at rock shops or metaphysical stores. If you arent able to get the stones listed, simply look around in nature to find a stone of a similar color. The crystals, minerals, and stones listed in this book are those that you can commonly find in metaphysical

you can use the stone to help you in your life. You are also made up of many colors. Everyone has a rainbow body. We are all beings of light composed of seven main chakras, or energy centers, and each has a color. The energy centers of the body (the chakras) are bands of energy holding the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional bodies of your awareness. The four bodies, both visible and invisible, create the aura or energy which surrounds your body. The mental body is the part of you that thinks. The emotional body is the part of you that feels, the spiritual body is the part of you connected with the Universal Life Force or God, and the physical body is the place where your soul and spirit live here on Earth. It is good to understand that there are four levels of awareness within every aspect of your life. It helps you know why you feel, think, act or react in certain ways in various situations. Each of these energy centers has a color associated with it, and together these colors make up the rainbow body. The many colorful crystals and stones can help us to understand and deal with challenging situations as they relate to each of these energy centers. Each of these energy centers has a lot of information stored inside that can help you understand yourself, and your friends and family. Life doesnt happen to us; we create it with our thoughts, actions, words and deeds. A simple desire to be happy and loved forms an intention. With a little bit of know-how, any of us can change an intention or thought into reality. We all make choices and develop beliefs through the stories we tell ourselves.

Crystals and the Rainbow Body

Crystals and stones are minerals, meaning they are neither plant nor animal. In other words, they are made up of non-living material. They come in various shapes and sizes. Crystals and stones are also sometimes called gemstones. There are families of crystals in which the stones look similar to each other but appear in various colors and slightly different shapes and sizes. Crystals come in a rainbow of colors. The New Flower Essences

Combining Ancient Technology with Future Science

lower essences are a profound form of energy medicine and have long been part of the tradition of Earth-based and Shamanic healing. For millennia, healers of all descriptions have accessed and utilized the intelligence inherent in Nature for a variety of purposes, particularly personal transformation. From Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome to the Aborigines of Australia, civilizations around the world have revered the power of flowers and used flower remedies for emotional, physical and spiritual healing. Paracelsus, the 15th century botanist and physician, wrote specifically about collecting dew from flowering plants, diluting it and using the liquid to treat imbalances in his patients. In recent times, this ancient technology has experienced a significant evolution, becoming one of the most potent forms of natural healing available for assisting us to meet the unique challenges of our times. As the speed of change escalates and our individual and collective

challenges intensify, it is time to allow Nature to guide us to solutions to our most perplexing problems. There are flower essence practitioners doing pioneering work in the fields of health and spirituality. They are at the leading edge of new thought and are laying the foundation for future science. The traditional remedies are still effective for their intended purposes; however, flower essences holding new patterns of consciousness provide solutions at a level that has not previously existed, assisting us to address challenges we have never before faced. They support our development into more evolved, spiritually mature and vital human beings.

How Flower Essences Are Made

Every flower holds a pattern of consciousness or energy signature. The flower essence practitioner chooses blossoms that have reached their peak potency and immerses the petals in water. The practitioner invokes

Choosing the Correct Flower Essences

There are many flower essences on the market with a variety of purposes. Here are some examples of the new flower essences: Rose Angel Face produces a flower essence which assists us to transcend the Piscean dynamics of codependent giving and conditional love and anchor the Aquarian dynamic of Extension of Self through Unconditional Love. The result is the experience of authentic intimacy and Oneness-essential aspects of evolved consciousness. It is especially useful for exposing what we require to heal in order to overcome patterns of codependent giving and/or withholding. If we are experiencing any form of lack in our lives, it assists us in transforming the perceptions that are keeping us from the miracle of receiving.

Natures intelligence to extract the essence of the flower, specifically its healing properties. After sitting in the sun for several hours, the solution is preserved, usually with brandy or vinegar. The resulting stock solution, called Mother Tincture, is used to create dosage bottles.

How Flower Essences Work

Each flower essence has a specific purpose. When you take a flower essence (on or under the tongue), the energy signature it holds enters your subtle energy system and is translated into the physical, emotional, mental and/or spiritual levels, creating shifts over time. The effects of flower essences are subtle and profound, immediate and long-term. Your level of sensitivity determines how quickly a flower essence has an effect on your subtle energy system and your ability to notice the effect. To increase your sensitivity, adopt higher nutritional practices (e.g., cleansing, fasting, juicing, raw cuisine, etc.). Also consider increasing the time you spend in spiritual practices (e.g., empowered prayer, meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga, etc.).

Healing versus Suppression

We are accustomed to addressing symptoms by suppressing them, rather than healing their underlying metaphysical causation. Ultimately, to experience health and well-being, we must heal imbalances at their point of origin within our consciousness, i.e., imprints from past experiences such as childhood trauma. We must also make the requisite life changes to align our lives with the impulses of our Souls. All flower essences address underlying causation to some extent. The flower essences based in the new Aquarian consciousness provide an opportunity for us to take our inner healing to new levels - reaching final resolution of the past, setting the stage for optimal health and supporting us to reach higher levels of consciousness.

Rose Europeana produces a flower essence which draws us into the Inner Sanctum of the Self where we experience our perfection as a Soul incarnate. It supports relinquishing non-essential activities and the primacy of the thinking mind so we are able to seat our consciousness in the Inner Sanctuary of the Self. In this Inner Sanctuary, we experience the eternal and changeless nature of Being. We come to know that we are innocent even when we appear guilty, we are whole even when we appear broken, and there is no death even though we appear to die. With so many flower essences available, how do you know what to choose? 1. Decide at which level you wish to work When choosing a brand of flower essences, recognize each brand has a different purpose and intended level of effect. Some address physical imbalances, others work

Recognizing the Effects of Flower Essences

Be conscious of prematurely judging the efficacy of flower essences and, therefore, prematurely discontinuing their use. I had a client who was taking flower essences to support her in addressing the underlying issues related to a long-standing depression, for which she was heavily medicated. After a few months she wrote to say she was going to discontinue using the flower essences because she hadnt noticed any changes. I encouraged her to keep taking them. A year later, I saw her 60 pounds lighter, with a smile on her face, having made a series of positive life changes. We have become accustomed to arduous and complicated approaches to personal growth. Though our evolutionary leaps can be challenging, our personal growth can be simplified...and accelerated. Such is the gift of flowers. The ancient Maya call the new age beginning on December 21, 2012, the Age of Itza which means, among many things, peace and flowers. It is time for us to blossom. Let us now choose perfected flowers to guide our unfoldment of the Peace and Beauty within.

on the emotional/mental issues underlying physical imbalances, and still others go deeper, working at the spiritual level. Working at the spiritual level allows you to achieve authentic resolution and ultimate transcendence of your challenges. 2. Assess flower essence quality There is great diversity in flower essence quality. One of the key factors is the land on which the flowers are grown. Land that is chemical-free, energetically and physically balanced and maintained at the highest level produces the most potent flowers. The consciousness of the flower essence practitioner is also critical to the quality of the flower essences. 3. Choose flower essences that support your highest unfoldment at this time Use your intuition supported by the names of the flower essences, their purpose statements and corresponding

The Energy-Emotion Matrix

By Synthia Andrews

oday more than ever before there is an awakening to subtle energy, the vital force that flows within and around us creating the ambiance of life. The increased prevalence of Yoga, Tai Chi, Reiki and other energy-based systems are rousing learners energy senses. As individuals begin feeling the flows in their body and noticing the energy interactions among people many are inspired to consciously participate in the dance of subtle energy to create meaningful, life-affirming change. What people may not realize however is that the key to understanding energy lies with our emotions. In addition to providing the rhythm, context and meaning to life, emotions deliver messages from our surroundings and generate the energy needed to respond. They convey the essence of being alive, informing our perceptions and enabling our goals. Without emotions there is small satisfaction in our successes and minimal learning in our failures; yet most of us spend a considerable amount of time and energy trying to avoid and control our feelings. We strive to escape or suppress anger, fear, sadness and shame while valuing happiness, excitement, satisfaction and joy. This is natural: the first group consists of emotions that are uncomfortable, the second

energizing and uplifting. We confuse comfortable and uncomfortable with value, labeling some emotions good and others bad. But what if there is function in our emotions that goes beyond comfort? Emotions translate subtle energy information coming to us from our environment and transmit our response back into the world. They form our gut instincts and intuition. Consider this scenario: Sarah is walking down the street to meet a friend. She stops to answer her cell phone and becomes engrossed in conversation, oblivious to the people around her. Suddenly, for no reason, Sarahs hair stands on end and she becomes overwhelmed with anxiety. Whirling around, she looks directly into the eyes of a man who is clearly following her. A bolt of energy electrifies her arms and legs. Immediately she feels angry. Energy pathways in her body open to send vital force to her boundary, the outer border of the energetic space around her. She is instantly filled with physical strength and ready to respond. What happened? From an energy perspective, the danger to Sarah is conveyed on a carrier wave and received by the energy structures in her body. The information is converted into emotion which arrives with

that our boundary has hardened and that we need to establish fair exchange with others. Contentment - The message here is that we are enough just the way we are, and that life is enough just the way it is. It may not be our idea of perfect, yet none the less, it is. Contentment is a purring vibration that harmonizes the cells of our body. The vibration of contentment opens our energy structures and invites flow through our entire system. The benefits of our emotion are lost when emotions continue past their usefulness. For example, an uncomfortable emotion such as fear keeps us safe unless it persists after the threat is gone. This can happen when we dont process the information or discharge the energy. Unprocessed emotion is suppressed under the surface, erupting at unexpected moments to make us afraid of things that are not threats. Fear prepares us for action. When we dont discharge the energy, muscles tighten to hold it in which sets the stage for chronic muscular pain. The main reason we suppress our emotions is because we have been trained to second guess our instincts. We have been trained to rely on rational thinking and to distrust what we feel. However, the reasoning part of the brain, the pre-frontal cortex, receives information from the emotional centers of the brain and integrates it with other types of intellect. (1) In other words, intelligent response includes emotional information. Research shows that emotional intelligence is more

such magnitude it pulls her attention from her phone call. Before the information reaches the emotional processing center in her brain, Sarah is already reacting as the energy signal informs her intuition and triggers a chemical cascade that tightens muscles and focuses her awareness. Her emotion informs her perceptions about her level of safety and transmits her response while providing energy for immediate action. Dissecting this process further, we see three distinct emotions that interact with Sarah to provide for her safety. First, she feels anxiety which lets her know that something is out of place. When she swirls around she is confronted with the source of the incongruity: someone is threatening her. The immediate burst of fear prepares her system for fight or flight and the subsequent anger provides protection and resolve. Each of these emotions is uncomfortable to feel and is often labeled as negative, yet each plays an essential role in keeping Sarah safe. Every emotion we experience provides a message and also channels our energy toward specific results. Here are a few examples: Despair - The function of desperation is to jumpstart creative thinking. It tells us that old ways of doing things cant work: there are no more resources and no further answers on this path. Energetically, desperation releases our fixed attention, freeing our energy fibers to reach for new ground. Guilt - The reverse of anger, guilt tells us when we have over-stepped anothers boundary, obstructed someone or caused an injustice. Guilt lets us know

52

important than IQ in career success and fostering happiness in relationships. (2) Do you remember being a kid and knowing from how you felt that a parent was angry with you, but being told you were wrong; that nothing was the matter? Denials of this nature send a two-fold message. First, they dissuade us from trusting our senses as we try to come to terms with a contradiction between what we sense vs. what we are told. A person who is always second guessing his or her instincts is unable to act with conviction or access personal power. Second, the denial of our true feelings implies that emotions are somehow bad and that we should deny what we feel. We are trained to believe that the mind is good and emotions are bad; that emotions take us away from logic and will lead us into the addictions of pleasure over the virtues of hard work. Fear, anger and shame, we are told, trap us in limitation. Many religions teach that emotions are tricksters, seducing aspirants away from faith. Emotions have even been described as parasites, as though one of the attributes in the magnificence of life is non-functional. The message is clear: emotions should be suppressed and overcome in favor of either logic and rationality or blind faith. Opposition between mind and emotion is an illusion: the two are meant to work together, each augmenting the others unique contribution. To return to our innate ability to utilize emotional information requires that we pay attention to the body. As demonstrated with Sarah, neuroscientists have found that emotions are often felt in the body before they are received in the brain. (3) Being in touch with how we feel puts us into direct contact with the flows of subtle energy around us. To access emotions is the key that opens the door to higher consciousness, helping us to understand our

selves and the world better. Emotions do this by being a direct link to subtle energy and the information that directs our inner convictions. Emotions are the language of subtle energy; the bodys translation of frequency. Through emotions, energy interactions are brought into direct awareness. When we become proficient using the emotional language of energy, we receive the information that emotions hold, direct the force they entrain and then are able to release them. We no longer harbor feelings that hurt or cause injury and no longer allow them to dictate our actions and behaviors. We choose to step into our personal power and take command of our emotional terrain so that our actions become conscious, creative, potent and fulfilling. We become the master creators of our life.

The Healing

Power of Animals

By Bill Benda, MD,

esearch uncovers therapeutic effects for heart disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons disease and more. Weve all seen those highly trained, four-legged helpers assist a blind person in navigating a street crossing. Whats new: Scientists now are discovering that dogs and other types of animals can actually help promote the healing process in people with a wide range of medical conditions. Sound far-fetched? While cozying up to an adoring family pet is widely known to have psychological benefits, popular domestic animals, including dogs and cats, are now helping in a different way. They are playing an important role in the treatment plans for stroke patients and others with such conditions as heart disease and Alzheimers disease. In addition, patients who have cancer, mental-health problems, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, and individuals with chronic pain have been shown to benefit from treatment that involves the use of animals.

So-called animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is also increasingly incorporating an even broader range of animals. For example, horseback riding is being used by people with health problems such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinsons disease. Even rabbits, llamas, birds and other types of animals are being used to promote physical, emotional and social well-being. Why It Helps Support for the therapeutic effects of animals continues to grow Landmark findings: Among 92 patients hospitalized for a heart condition or heart attack, only 6% of pet (mostly dog) owners died within one year of discharge, versus 28% of people who did not own pets. In a study of 48 New York City stockbrokers, those who owned a dog or a cat had half the increase in blood pressure associated with stressful situations as those without pets. More recently, research focusing specifically on AAT suggests that interacting with animals may have

horseback riding can help strengthen muscles in the trunk and loosen contracted joints. AAT can help reduce agitation and depression in Alzheimers patients, and it can curb a cancer patients perception of pain and fatigue. Patients who have AAT receive individualized treatment plans with the animalsessions are scheduled at set intervalsand the health-care provider makes notes on the progress that is made by the patient during each session. In some cases, AAT may be covered as part of a physical therapy program. Getting Started If you would like to try AAT, speak to your doctor. If he/she gives you the go-ahead, contact Pet Partners (formerly Delta Society), 425-679-5500, http://www.PetPartners.org. This nonprofit organization, which registers therapy animals and their owners, can help you locate a facility that offers AAT. People who are not able to leave their homes may also receive AAT. A family member or health-care provider should contact Pet Partners for a referral to a trained animal owner who provides AAT on a volunteer basis. In these instances, therapy visits should be arranged and overseen by a home health-care provider. Important: If you have reduced immunityfor example, due to an autoimmune disease or if you are on chemotherapy, high-dose steroids or other immune-suppressive- medicationsAAT may not be appropriate for you. Animals that participate in AAT are required to be clean and well groomed and must undergo a thorough veterinary checkup. However, patients with reduced immunity often are advised to limit unnecessary contact with animalsand humansto help them avoid exposure to infectious agents.

salutary effects because it increases levels of the hormone oxytocin, which is believed to have powerful effects on the bodys ability to heal and grow new cells. How It Works With AAT, the animals are not there to simply play with the patients. Instead, the animal, whose temperament has been evaluated by a national animal therapy organization, helps a patient achieve specific treatment goals. For example, a physical therapist may use a dog (owned by a volunteer who has participated in training or, in some cases, the facility where the therapy takes place) to help a stroke patient regain the ability to stand and walk. The stroke patient may walk the dog for short distances (the dog owner may use a double-handle leash to accompany the dog and patient). For millennia, the Reptilian has factored into humanitys mythology and worship, and now they play an exponentially greater role in our notions of ancient alien hypothesis and extraterrestrial interaction with mankind. But the big question is why? What is it that Religion and Science isnt telling us about where we come from and why we are here? And why is the Serpent, a being both feared and revered, so inextricably linked to the misty imaginations and fortiEARTH STAR

This mythological account has spawned the notion of extraterrestrial progenitors and non-human interaction with mankind, underscored by the undeniable connectivity between the stories of these ancient beings and the writings found in the Hebrew bible and nearly every other ancient culture and religion. Who were the Annunaki? Were they descended gods, royal human monarchs or visiting, settling beings from another world, bent on molding ancient man to its whims and desires?

throughout human history, or are they all telling similar stories of common events? The Merovingian kings of Europes Dark Ages believed they were descended from these beings, possessing the blood of the Serpent as well as the blood of Christ, thereby establishing their godlike claim to power. Adolph Hitler followed in their footsteps, and his claim to being the leader of a master race, as well as his heinous notions of a final solution were all based in his belief that he was a descendant of these serpentblooded kings. Are the Reptilians simply part of an ancient mythology that has reemerged in a modern mythology of space travelers and warring species seeking planetary dominance? Or is there some underlying secret story that is the common thread to the seemingly endless line of connectivity to the Serpent?

And who are Elil and Enki? They are listed as the chief gods of the Annunaki, but then why do they appear again and again throughout ancient world religion? Is Elil the same as Elohim? Is Enki/Ea the same as Yaweh/Jehovah? Are our religions merely created out of whole cloth, built one upon another as they evolve

An Unexpected Visit
from the

Afterlife

By Annie Kagan

y the time my brother Billy died he was a homeless alcoholic. The day before his death, a bitterly cold January morning, I layered on two down jackets and several wool hats, and walked across the street to the bay. Looking up at the silvery sky, I raised my arms and imagined pushing Billy into the hands of the great Divine. Take care of him for me, I whispered. Unbelievably, hours later, Billy was dead. They say there are different stages of griefshock, guilt, anger, depression. But all those feelings collided and came crashing in on me at once. Mostly I stayed in bed, crying. The rest of the time I was swallowing Valium until I was a walking zombie. After three weeks of post-death misery, it was my birthday. Just before sunrise, as I was waking up, I heard someone calling my name from above me. Annie! Annie! Its me! Its me! Its Billy. It was Billys unmistakable deep, mellow voice. I was startled, but not at all afraid. In fact, I felt comforted. Billy? I said, half asleep. You cant be here. Youre dead. I must be dreaming. Youre not dreaming. Its me! Get up and get the red notebook.

Suddenly, I was very much awake. Id completely forgotten about the red leather notebook Billy had sent me last year for my birthday. I was touched that he had made the effort to send me a gift even though he was becoming overwhelmed by his addictions. I jumped out of bed and found the red notebook on a shelf in my bedroom closet. The pages were blank, except for an inscription written on the first page. Dear Annie, Everyone needs a book dedicated to them. Read between the lines. Love, Billy What a strange thing for Billy to have written! Read between the Lines? I ran my fingers over the familiar handwriting. Then I heard him again. Its really me, Annie. And Im okay, its okay because... I grabbed a pen and wrote what he was saying in the red notebook.

The first thing that happens is bliss, at least it was like that in my case. I dont know if its that way for everyone who dies. As the car hit me, this energy came and sucked me right out of my body into a higher realm. I say higher since I had the feeling of rising up and suddenly all my pain was gone. I dont remember hovering over my body or looking down on it or anything like that. I guess I was pretty anxious to get out of there. I knew right away I was dead, and went with it, more than ready for whatever was waiting. I wasnt aware of traveling at any particular speed. I just felt light and unburdened as the sucking motion drew me up inside a chamber of thick silvery blue lights. People who have near death experiences sometimes say they went through a tunnel. Im using the word chamber because a tunnel has sides, but no matter what direction I looked, there was nothing but light for as far as I could see. Maybe the difference is I had a one-way ticket and theirs was a round-trip. And even though I didnt have my body anymore, it felt like I did and that it was being healed. The lights in the chamber penetrated me and made me feel better and better as they pulled me up. It wasnt just the wounds from my car accident that were being healed. In the first nanosecond that the lights touched me, they erased any harm I suffered during my lifetime: physical, mental, emotional or otherwise. Soon, Daddy appeared right there beside me, young and smiling and handsome as ever. He was making jokes and asking, What took you so long? It was so great, seeing Daddy, but Im guessing he was there to be a familiar landmark in foreign territory. Im saying that because he was only with me for part of the ride and Daddy definitely wasnt the main event. The main event was the silvery lights and their party atmosphere. Those healing lights had a festive feeling, like they were cheering me on, saying welcome home, son. I cant say how long I was floating up the healing chamber because I no longer have a sense of time. But I can say that chamber was some kind of cosmic birthing canal that delivered me into this new life. I want you to know, darling, theres nothing hard or cruel for me anymore. I glided from the chamber right out into the glorious Universe. Im drifting weightlessly through space with these gorgeous stars and moons and

galaxies twinkling all around me. The whole atmosphere is filled with a soothing hum, like hundreds of thousands of voices are singing to me but theyre so far away I can just barely hear them. And although I cant exactly say anyone was here to greet me, as soon as I came out of the chamber I felt a Divine Presence, a kind, loving, beneficent presence, and really, that was enough. In addition to the Divine Presence I also feel beings around me, Higher Beings, I guess you would call them. I cant explain why Im using the word beings, and not the singular; I just know theres more than one. I cant see or hear them, but I can feel them moving about, swooshing by, doing different things that concern yours truly. And although I havent got a clue what these things might be, Im guessing that floating out here in space is euphoric instead of terrifying because Im being attended to by this celestial crew. Im looking down on the earth, and it is down. Its like theres a hole in the sky, a hole between our two worlds, I can look through and see you. I know how sad you are about my death. Sad is too small a word. Bereft is more like it. But death isnt as serious as you think it is, honey. So far, its very enjoyable. Couldnt be better, really. Try not to take death too seriously. As a matter of fact, try not to take life too seriously. Youd enjoy yourself a lot more. Thats one of the secrets of life. You want to know another secret? Saying goodbye isnt as serious as it seems either, because we will meet again.

ack had it right when he planted the magic seeds that grew into a sky high beanstalk. Not only did he stumble upon the principles of vertical gardening; but Jack also discovered the path to abundance and self-reliance when he realized he could provide for himself and his family as a result of the riches he discovered after growing vegetables vertically. Just like with most new ideas, at first the idea is novel and a small group of people embrace it while others look on thinking theyre crazy; however, there comes a tipping point when enough people recognize that the crazy idea is actually the leading edge of genius and all of a sudden, everyones doing it. Thats whats happening with the idea of growing food vertically, taking advantage of the uncharted sky and reducing your gardens footprint.

Soil or water medium?

Essentially, there are two types of vertical gardens those that grow in soil and those that grow in water. Water-based growing mediums are either aquaponic or hydroponic. Hydroponics is a method of growing vegetables and other plants in water without soil and nourished with a mineral nutrient. Aquaponics is a growing system combining the raising of aquatic animals such as fish with hydroponic gardening, where plants are cultivated in a water medium all in the same tank. The symbiotic relationship between the plants and animals produces a vital growing medium and a sustainable food production system. Both systems provide organic or non-organic growing environments for vegetables.

have no land or a very small yard. Grow up the side of your fence, on a wall, the deck, your balcony, in a green house or even inside in the garage. 3. Some vertical garden systems are portable and can be moved from outside to indoors on wheeled apparatus. 4. Grow inside during colder month, using a grow light. 5. Community gardens are easy to set up, even in small, indoor spaces. 6. Theres much less work and time involved when preparing vertical gardensno tilling, no digging. 7. Use less water because in many vertical gardens, water is recycled through the planting system. 8. Youre dog wont dig up your garden, and neither will rabbits or deer. 9. Its an easier way to protect your plants from soil-borne pests. 10. Companion gardening is easy and even more advantageous when you can move planters around to take advantage of beneficial conditions. 11. Using no soil means no weeds or fewer weeds in less soil. 12. Increase vegetable yield. Relocate plants to better take advantage of light and air circulation. 13. My favorite reason for being a fan of vertical gardening is to avoid the prying eyes of municipal authoritiesthose people forcing others to dig up gardens and destroy their food supply. Vertical gardening allows you to grow food in less obvious places, even under grow lights, out of site of the food police. Now is the time to plan your new vertical garden project for the spring, just around the corner..

Reasons to grow vertically

So, why would you want to take advantage of growing a garden vertically, instead of in a traditional garden plot? There are lots of reasons. 1. Old souls love to putter in the garden, but the oldest of souls usually complain about their backs and knees hurting. Vertical gardening enables you to grow veggies without ever bending or getting on your knees again. Grow vertically in plant pockets, hanging planters, stacking containers, recycled pallets, in stacked flower boxes, table garden systems, plant trees, in greenhouses on tables and up-cycled ladders. If you can imagine it, you can grow it. 2. Save space with a vertical garden, especially if you

A Eulogy for Philip Coppens

I have followed, studied and presented on what the true meaning of December 21, 2012 is all about, wrote Philip Coppens, author and researcher of esoteric ancient mysteries, on his website in mid December of 2012. This true meaning, in Coppens estimation, of the supposed end of the Mayan calendar, could be summarized with a single word: transformation. But in late November, the Ancient Aliens star continued, I did not realize how extraordinary my own future post 2012 would be from before. An Old Age has indeed died, or is dying, and is being replaced with a new one. These words would mirror, albeit painfully, a transformation of sorts which Coppens himself had been undergoing just as well; the authors own eventual struggle with the onset of one of the rarest varieties of cancer affecting the adult population worldwide. In my case, I was diagnosed with an extremely rare case of cancer, angio sarcoma, which affects less than 200 people in the U.S. (each year). Each case is almost by default unique and so I found that the man who normally studies anomalies, has become a medical enigma a well. Sadly, this would be the final addition posted to his personal blog, for in this instance, Coppens, whose work had run the gamut from political conspiracies, to the quest for proof of Earths visitation by nonhuman intelligences in ancient times, was unable to outlive the enigma which claimed his life on December 30, 2012. He was forty-one years old. Filip Philippe Coppens was born on January 25, 1971 in the market town of Sint-Niklaas, a small commerce center serving as capital of Waasland in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The regions rich Medieval history served as fertile grounds for the imagination, having inspired for the fabled fox-character Reynards epic, and perhaps the history of the surrounding lands would indeed instill in young Philip a driving curiosity for the worlds enigmatic obscurities. Coppens had risen to international fame as an author and lecturer, in addition to becoming a rising television star following his frequent appearances on the History Channels Ancient Aliens, a show which paired him alongside ancient astronaut theorists the likes of Giorgio Tsoukalos and Erich von Daniken; with the publication of von Danikens Odyssey of the Gods, it was announced that Coppens would also be granting interview appearances in promotion of the book on the authors behalf, as it had been announced he would be traveling at the time of the books release. But Coppens, unlike many of his peers in the ancient astronaut camp, was often something of an enigma. While he was open minded in his approach to the study of strange phenomena like UFOs, and how these topics fit into Earths prehistory, Coppens was at times perhaps even better known for the skeptical approach his research and writing could entail. His appeal to each end of the philosophical spectrumheralded as a skeptic by many believers, and a believer by the debunker crowdwould garner a diverse audience of fans and admirers. Arguably, Coppens had risen to the position of putting forth some of the most reasonable and fullbodied research into mankinds ancient past, and doing so in a way that incorporated those otherwise taboo elements that involved the supposition of otherworldly influences affecting humanitys rise throughout history. This research, along with his frequent recurring appearances on Ancient Aliens, would lead to the authorship of The Ancient Alien Question and its sequel, The Lost Civilization Enigma (New Page Books, 2011 and 2012 respectively). On September 22, 2011, Coppens married New York Times bestselling author and activist Kathleen McGowan, with whom he hosted a weekly radio program called The Spirit Revolution. Together, McGowan and Coppens collaborated on a number of projects, including plans to author a revision of the history associated with Anne Boleyn, the controversial and tempestuous second wife to Henry VIII. Shortly following the release of The Lost Civilization Enigma, Coppens was hospitalized in California, and subsequently diagnosed with a rare cancer, angiosarcoma, which affects less than one percent of adults suffering from cancerous malignancies. Coppens, with Kathleen by his side, underwent biopsies and testing, with scattered visitation from the likes of fellow ancient alien theorist Giorgio Tsoukalkos. Following several surgeries and treatment, a medical fund was established for Coppens through donations made to the website GiveForward.com. He remained hospitalized, and on December 30, 2012, Coppens passed away following a series of operations that had taken place over the weekend.
