Il Present Continuous si ua nei seguenti casi:

The Present Continuous is used in the following cases:

1 Adesso. Now.

Si usa il Present Continuous per dire che qualcosa sta accadendo. Si può usare anche
per dire che qualcosa non sta accadendo.
The Present Continuous is used to say that something is happening. It can
also be used to say that something is not happening.
You are learning Italian now. Stai imparando italiano adesso
You are not smoking now.
Adesso non stai fumando.
What are you doing? I’m watching tv? Cosa fai? Guardo television.

2 Tempo in progresso più lungo . A longer period in progress.

Adesso in inglese può anche assumere un significato più prolungato nel tempo: oggi,
questo mese, quest’anno, ecc. Quindi a volte usiamo il Present Continuous per dire
che stiamo svolgendo un’azione che è in progresso in un tempo più lungo e che non si
riferisce a questo preciso momento.
In English, "now" can mean: today, this month, this year, and so on.
Therefore sometimes we use the Present Continuous to say that we are doing
an action which need a longer period of time to be fulfilled.
I am studying to become an engineer. Sto studiando per diventare ingegnere.
I am not studying to become a doctor. Non sto studiando per essere un dottore.
Are you working in a restaurant now? Lavori in un ristorante adesso?

3 Futuro vicino nel tempo. Near future.

A volte usiamo il Present Continuous per dire che qualcosa succederà o meno nel
futuro. In questo caso parliamo di qualcosa programmato e di accordi presi con le
persone coinvolte.
Sometimes we use the Present Continuous to say that something will or will
not happen in the near future. In this case we refer to an agreement
arranged with somebody.
I am meeting a nice girl after work. Mi vedrò con una bella ragazza dopo il lavoro.
I am not going to the party tonight. Non anrò alla festa stasera.

Are you going to the cinema tomorrow evening? Vai al cinema domain sera?

Verbi che non usano i tempi progressivi. Non-Continuous Verbs.

I "Non-Continuous Verbs," è un piccolo gruppo di verbi che esprimono azioni che
non possiamo vedere in corso di svolgimento. Pertanto questi verbi non vengono usati
nei tempi continuous.
The “Non-Continuous Verbs” is a small group of verbs which expresses
actions you cannot see somebody doing. These verbs are not used in
continuous tenses. They include:
Verbi astratti:
to be, to want, to cost, to seem, to need, to care, to contain, to owe, to exist...
Verbi di possesso:
to possess, to own, to belong...
Verbi di emozione:
to like, to love, to hate, to dislike, to fear, to envy, to mind...
He is needing money now. Not Correct
He needs money now. Correct
Ha bisogno di denaro adesso.
He is wanting a cup of coffee now. Not Correct

Verbi Misti. Mixed Verbs.

I "Mixed Verbs," è un gruppo di verbi molto esiguo. Questi verbi hanno più di un
significato, e secondo il significato il verbo si comporterà come i "Non-Continuous
Verbs," oppure come verbi normali.
The "Mixed Verbs," is a very small group of verbs. These verbs have more
than one meaning, according to the meaning the verb will behave either like
a "Non-Continuous Verb," or like a "Normal Verb.“
Mixed Verbs:
to appear, to feel, to have, to hear, to look, to see, smell, to miss, to taste, to think, to
be, to weigh...
I have a car now. (I possess a car) Non-Continuous Verb Ho una macchina.
I am having a drink now. Normal Verb Bevo qualcosa adesso.
Lucy looks tired. (She seems tired) Non-Continuous Verb Lei sembra
stanca.
Ann is looking at the blackboard. Normal verb. Anna guarda la lavagna.
