oday, we celebrate the Feast of the Sto. Nio. The Gospel tells how Jesus shows us that the way to greatness is through the ways of a child. Look at a child. He was once a baby, small and with much painstaking, underwent a series of growth and development. This process challenged him physically and psychologically to master his very self. A nurturing environment will help develop his potentials. As in any disaster, the most vulnerable are the children. They are the ones who need to be protected. On November 8, 2013, super Typhoon Yolanda hit us in the Visayas, specifically Tacloban, Northern Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Antique. Everybody knew how much damage it brought to life and property. One of the expected most dreaded effects of the Yolanda tragedy would be on the children. Yes! Our young people! What will happen to them since they have personally witnessed what was called the storm surge? Around two weeks after that Yolanda surge, when I joined one of the medical missions to Carles, Iloilo, I noticed that along the way, some men were already up and about their roofs to repair their houses so they could have shelter for their families. Also along the way, it was a shocking sight to see the pliant bamboo trees turned and broken into different directions. This would tell us that the force of Yolandas winds was that strong! Terrible! Ini ginahimo sa katuyoan nga mabatyagan sang mga pumoluyo, ilabi na gid ang mga nakalimot sang ila katungdanan espiritwal, nga kinahanglan na sila magbalik sa sabak sang ila Iloy-Simbahan. Bahin man ini sang selebrasyon sang Tuig sang mga Laiko sa sining 2014. Ang mga detalye nahanungod sa sini nga bulohaton mabasahan sa nagakaigo nga bahin sang Candlelight. Ginapanugyan ko gid ang aktibo nga partisipasyon sang mga taga-barangay sa sini nga hilikuton. ***** Sa nagligad nga isyu sang Candlelight, sa Readers Corner, may nagpamangkot nahanungod sa St. John Mary Vianney Center. May mga duha pa siguro ka mga miting ang matabu agod nga ang tanan nga mga detalye, halin sa mga Misa sa Nobenaryo kag sa Piesta tubtob sa prosesyon lubos pa gid nga matutukan sing nagakaigo. Ginapasalamatan ko gid ang tanan nga mga katapu sang mga komitiba tungod sang ila kaalwan sa paghatag sang ila tinion kag ikasarang agod mahatagan sing nagakaigo nga duag ang aton selebrasyon. ***** Isa sang mga ginakabig ko nga labing importante nga bulohaton para sa piesta sang aton Parokya amo ang partisipasyon sang mga pumoluyo sa barangay. Ang Pparokya sang Ntra. Sra. De La Candelaria sa Jaro ginabug-osan sang lainlain nga mga barangay nga sakop sini. ost of us say that the happiness of the elders are the little children. It is right, because little children bring joy to a lonely home with their simple gestures like saying I love you to their mother and father, playing with their brothers and sisters, singing or dancing in front of and for many family members, talking silly things and kissing and hugging everyone. But some say little children bring burden to their lives because of their stubbornness, hardheadedness and for being troublesome. But talking about that burden, we must not scold them for Jesus once challenged His disciples to become like little children saying, Amen, I say to you, unless you

turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Being stubborn is just one of the characteristics of their early childhood which hopefully they could outgrow later in life. We who are old enough must understand them. Like the Sto. Nio Who reminds us that our attitude should be the same as Jesus Christs: Though He was God, he did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking on the nature of a servant, made in human likeness, and his appearance found as man, he humbled himself. (Phil 2:5-8). Love the little children as Jesus loves us. Be a little child as Jesus wants us to be. Be a servant and be a saint like the Sto. Nio.

et us call him RR - a young man in a wheelchair. After our encounter in Jaro Plaza last year where I would usually pass by to and from my office in Archbishops Residence, he would sometimes visit me here in the Cathedral to greet me or to ask for some blessings. Few days ago, I was surprised with his visit since we have not met for a long time. He asked me if Wish Ko Lang, the first wish-granting program on Philippine television, has replied to our letter as we wrote them asking for some assistance. Even though theres no response yet from them, RR responded with a hopeful smile. Before he left, he told me, Fr. Nat, ikaw na lang bala tatay ko! I was dumbfounded. I thought of the responsibilities it entails. (wala gani ko nangasawa para wala ako bata!) But he followed up, Kon indi ka, salabton mo gid na sa Ginoo. Pili ka, ang Ginoo ukon impierno? With his argument, what can I do? This experience led me to remember many children and young people of our time who hunger for parental presence, love and care. And RR is just one of them. They need our attention and support. But what concerns me most (and I believe this should be your concern too!) are the many incidents of child abuse happening in our society today, starting

perhaps from our homes. Many children are victims of verbal, physical and sexual abuse. Some are forced to work at an early age. Theres the proliferation of cyber sex dens where children are utilized for pornography. Incest.

Pedophilia. Prostitution. They happen not just because of poverty but because of neglect of some parents or guardians and childrens curiosity brought about by the influence of some media sectors which practice irresponsibility. Isnt it that some radio and television programs are pleasurable to the senses and they are being followed by many of us? As we celebrate the Feast of Sto. Nio to whom we Filipinos are really devoted to, we are reminded and challenged to express our devotion through our love and respect for our children. We are called to care, protect and defend them, upholding their rights and safeguarding them from harms and dangers that can destroy their self-esteem and their future as well. The innocence and helplessness of our children do not give us the permission to take advantage of them. Rather, we are called to preserve these virtues and re-learn them, thereby, restoring these values in ourselves. As we are fond of cuddling the Sto. Ni0 to show our love and reverence to Him, can we not do the same to our children in whom Jesus is also present? Can we become loving and caring foster parents to the children in need? Are we not called to respect them as they are our younger brothers and sisters?

directions came from all angles! When we saw the children, they seemed to be wondering what was happening to them and to their surroundings. It seemed they had not fully-grasped what this was all about. Most of them were not really that sick. For me, what they needed was enough time to tell their stories, to allow them to play, and to let them be what they have been before Yolanda came. We also saw parents busy procuring their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. But surprisingly, I noticed that children gathered and began to play while they were waiting for their parents. Some were still in a state of shock that all they did was to observe their playmates. They were the ones who had not readily adapted to the situation. A week after that, I again went with another group for a medical mission. CANDLE LIGHT (January 19 - 25, 2014)

This time, in Dumalag, Capiz. I noticed some changes. The children were more likely to hold on to their parents as they went around during the medical mission. Most of them were also not really that sick. Parents only came to ask for vitamins for their children and for themselves, so that they would not feel tired easily when they do their days work. Last January 5, 2014, I joined the Jaro Archdiocesan Commission on Health Care visit Brgy. Manipulon, Estancia, Iloilo. This time, it was not a medical mission but a community survey. This time, I had more time to talk with the children. Guess what? They were already back to their state of being children they were playing once again! Some have gone back to school, and this was another island away. The community exerted a group effort to help their children back to school. The people have only one plea and that is to help them restore themselves to be once more productive. They all agree that giving them food may last them for only a day or two. What they want is to rebuild their houses and to restore their

means of living which is mainly fishing, so that they will not be dependent all along. This was clearly depicted in their newly received donated motor-boats which had the slogan PAGLAUM, PAGHILI-USA. Being pliant, like a bamboo, is one trait we Filipinos must be thankful for. It will make us go the long way of hope, the open working relationship of being community, sharing the spirit of love and unity. Perhaps, when we all cooperate and help one another in whatever way we can, we will surpass this dreaded event called Yolanda, and once more be on our feet towards a brighter, self-sustaining future, and we will remember to be more mindful of our environment. Let us focus onward and go beyond Yolanda. Hope! Unite! Cooperate!

Senor Santo Nio, ginaagda man kita sa pagsimba sa Iya nga Dios nga nangin Tawo sa dagway sang bata, mag mangin kaangay kay Jesus nga mapainubuson kag magbaton sang mga bata sa aton sosyedad nga may paghigugma kag pagrespeto. Usisaon naton ang aton mga piesta nga ginahiwat ilabi na gid ang Dinagyang sa sunod nga semana. Lagdameo urges Lay People to be Leaven in Society

ARO, Iloilo, Jan. 17, 2014 Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo urged the laity to be leaven in todays society, reminding them of their being salt of the earth and light of the world when they render service in the Church. Through your service in the Church, you are living out the call to be salt of the earth and light of the world because you are called to be saints and sent forth as heroes, Lagdameo said during his homily at the launching of the Year of the Laity at the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral last January 11. Lagdameo challenged the lay people to Stand up for Christ in your public and private life, to read the bible to nourish your life, and to have recourse to the sacraments especially the sacrament of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. He reiterated the call of Pope Francis to all Catholics saying that you must go into the world of the family, of business, of economics, of politics, of education, of the mass media and the social media, to every human endeavor where the future of humanity and the world are at stake and to make a difference. He further advised the laity to unite in groups which through prayer, discernment and concerted action to renew the social and political fabric of

The celebration began with a program at 1:00 p.m. The Iloilo Catholic Charismatic Renewal Secretariat (ICCRS) performed animations. In a welcome message Fr. Joenick Territorio, Director of the Jaro Commission on Laity, emphasized to the laity the 4 Cs: Communion with God, Collaboration of the laity to the ministry of the Priests, Cooperation and Coordination in the different lay charisms. Tributes were given to past Laity Commission Directors and Animators Rev. Msgr. Joemari Delgado, Rev. Fr. Robert Amalay, Rev. Fr. Joel Rudi and Rev. Fr. Midyphil Billonesin recognition of the roles they played in the journey of the laity in the archdiocese. Dr. Linda Tacorda, former National Laiko President and a pillar of the establishment of the Commission on Laity in the Archdiocese, in a talk, has challenged the laity to bring out your gifts and activate it. If the laity are formed, they become codiscerners and partners to bring together and build the Church. The laity must bring their faith and gospel through their profession, bringing love to their vocations as being counted by the Lord to

build the same Church that Jesus has built for us, she said. The talk was followed by a presentation from the Jaro Archdiocesan Youth Commission depicting the realities of the youth today and their tasks as young people to be saints and heroes in their everyday life. A video presentation of the activities of the Commission on Laity was also shown to enhance the understanding of the laitys role in the Church. The launching was capped with the formal introduction of the new Archdiocesan website, www. jaroarchdiocese.org. Msgr. ost Rev. Socrates B. Villegas, President of the CBCP issued as statement regarding the countrys new Cardinal. The CBCP is elated to receive the news that Pope Francis has named the Archbishop of Cotabato, Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, OMI as a member of the College of Cardinals. Cardinal Elect Quevedo is a senior member of the Catholic hierarchy in the Philippines. He is known in the CBCP for his mental clarity and intellectual brilliance. He is an archbishop who is truly passionate for the formation of basic ecclesial communities. He has been a pastor up north in Ilocos Sur and down south in Cotabato. He is an intellectual giant with a very simple lifestyle and very warm fraternal manners. He is a blessing for the Church. As a member of the College of Cardinals he will be able to assist the Pope in reaching out to the marginalized in Mindanao. A Cardinal from Mindanao is a papal tribute to the strength of the Catholic faith in that region of our country. It is a proof that the Catholic faith in Mindanao is now bearing rich fruits; Cardinal Quevedo is its living testimony.

total of 300 Grade 3 pupils from Jaro I Elementary School and Judith Lazarraga Memorial School of Barangay Tabuc Suba, Ilaya underwent their First Confession at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles Parish last January 15, 2014 at 9 oclock a.m.. Five priests were present to administer the said Sacrament of Confession. They were Msgr. Gene C. Velarde, Fr. Ronald de C. Leon, Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon, Fr. Francisco T. Angostura and Fr. Cirilo C. Camus. Parents and teachers were also present and they guide their children. Catechists of Our Lady of Candles Parish facilitated and prepared much for the First Communicants with guidelines and procedures. anuary 15, 2014. During his weekly catechesis, Pope Francis talked about the importance of Baptism. He described it as a special Sacrament that welcomes Christians into their journey of faith. With thousands of people in St. Peters Square, he explained that whoever receives the Sacrament is called to be a disciple and missionary. In every generation, through baptism, we are reborn to the new life of grace and called to be witnesses of the Gospel before the world. Baptism makes us missionary disciples within the communion of the Church. There is a close bond, then, between our rebirth in water and the Holy Spirit, our responsibility to live this new life within the Church, in our families and our parishes, and our mission to bring the Gospel to others as channels of Gods grace. He also explained to us the types of law, namely, divine law and the human law. Divine Law came from God and Human Law from man. Divine Law is either natural or divine positive law. Natural Law is imprinted in nature. Divine Positive Law is revealed by God in the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament and in the teachings of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Thus, the Canon Law should be learned, appreciated, and observed to enable us to order and direct our activities according to the mission of the Church towards holiness of life and salvation of souls.

The course offered for the month of January is Canon Law with the Archdiocesan Chancellor Rev. Fr. Joenick S. Territorio, who is also the Parish Education Ministry Director, Arcdiocesan Commission on the Laity Director, Seminary Professor on Canon Law and Defender of the Bond in Matrimonial Court. Father Joenick introduced Canon Law to us by explaining first, the immediate, proximate, and ultimate goals of the Law. According to him, its immediate purpose is to know and exercise our rights and duties as baptized Christians. Its proximate purpose is to

ensure the just ordering of the Parish or the Church so that the faithful may function well according to their proper tasks. Lastly, the ultimate purpose of the Law of the Church is the attainment of holiness of life and the salvation of souls. Thus canon law is also very important in the parish ministry. Fr.
