Senior Development and Communications Officer

Job Description

September 2009

The mission of the National Organization on Disability (NOD) is to expand the


participation and contribution of America’s 54 million men, women and
children with disabilities in all aspects of life. NOD accomplishes this by
piloting innovative programs, leveraging an extensive network of corporate
partners for increased workforce participation, and advocating for improved
public policy. Now in its 27th year, NOD provides national leadership for
sustained efforts aimed at addressing persistently high rates of
unemployment among people with disabilities.

The Senior Development and Communications Officer will play a critical role
in strengthening and supporting NOD’s fund development capacity and
helping to craft and implement NOD’s communications strategy. This position
offers the possibility of significant advancement within the organization and
will be located at NOD’s New York City office.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities include:

Development
•Working with outside consultants, plan and implement a development
strategy that will ensure effective, coordinated and sustainable
fundraising;
•Oversight of all fundraising and cultivation activities directed toward
foundations, businesses, individuals and government, including grants
development, annual campaigns, special events and major donor
campaigns.
•Work with project directors to understand the priorities and funding
opportunities relevant to their projects;
•Conduct public and private funding prospect research and meeting
briefings for Board members and principals;
•Identify and develop potential funding opportunities, engaging both public
and private funding sources;
•Support program staff in building and maintaining effective and
productive relationships with funders;
•Prepare funding requests, reports, and letters of inquiry;
•Create fundraising protocols for a decentralized organization and oversee
development database for tracking fundraising activity;
•Oversee communication with current and prospective funders.

Communications
•Design a communications strategy that will ensure consistent messaging
across NOD’s public and funder materials, website and press releases,
with assistance of outside consultants, as available;
•Shepherd the re-creation of NOD’s website, and manage updates as
needed;
•Coordinate content and production of all mass mailing media, including
Annual Reports and periodic letters to constituents;
•Ensure all mass mailing media, including program-specific media,
accurately represent NOD in both content and design;
•Collaborate with the staff across NOD’s five offices to oversee both
internal and external communication material;
•Support executive leadership and board members as needed.

Qualifications

We are seeking an extremely organized, highly detail-focused individual who


can be flexible and cheerful in responding to the needs of a small, fast-
moving nonprofit. S/he should have:

•Three-to-five years relevant work experience;


•A proven track record in successful grant writing to both public and
private grantors, with an emphasis on federal and state agencies;
•Hands-on experience in public or private sector media and/or
communications;
•Outstanding writing skills;
•Ability to work collaboratively, independently, and humbly;
•Demonstrated interest in, and/or experience with, disability issues a
strong plus;
•Experience raising public funds for workforce development, disability
and/or research and demonstration initiatives a strong plus.
