art Thou of Divine Illumination, and the second Theologian, and the Trinitys Bright Secretary, O Gregory, as one who teaches on the Divine Nature and ineffable. So as Thou more clearly now enjoy being with God, remember us all who honour Thee, and be our Champion in the Defence of the Church Thou organised. For as the Scripture states, Thy voice and words have gone forth to the ends of the Universe, teaching all to give Glory to the Consubstantial Trinity. Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with strings and flute. Eloquent Father, when Thou planted with Thy Tongue the Godly Seed in furrows of the heart, then to the complement of the Church Thou brought the Harvest of the sublime and richest Theology. With the Spirits Fire, from the Church Thou burntaway the thorny weeds of the heresies; and Thou were bred on the Highest Love for Divine Philosophy, Father of Fathers, and the Pastor of Pastors, Bright Star of Priests, and the Pride and Joy of the world, and the Glory of the Faithful, Blessed Gregory.

St Gregory the Theologian of Constantinople

St Gregory the Theologian is also known as St Gregory of Nazianzos (although that title more appropriately refers to his Father) and St Gregory the Younger. He was a great Holy Father and Teacher of the Church who is Commemorated on 25 January, on 19 January Translation of His Holy Relics and on 30 January, together with St Basil the Great and St John Chrysostom, being one of The Three Holy Hierarchs. St Gregory is also known as one of the Cappadocian Fathers one of our Holy Fathers of Cappadocia, which produced so many of our wonderful Spiritual Fathers and Saints. He was born in 329 in Arianzos, a village of the second district of Cappadocia, not far from Nazianzos. His Father was St Gregory, Bishop of Nazianzos, and his mother, was St Nonna. His siblings were St Caesarios and his sister was St Gorgonia. St Gregory studied in Caesarea, Palestine, in Alexandria, and, finally, in Athens. While sailing from Alexandria to Athens, a violent storm threatened not only his Life but also his Eternal Salvation, since he had not yet been Baptised. With tears and Fervent Prayers he besought God to spare him, vowing to dedicate himself, body and soul, to His Faithful, Holy Service. Suddenly the terrifying the tempest gave way to calm and they all arrived safely at their destination. At Athens St Gregory was later joined by St Basil the Great, whom he already knew, but now their acquaintanceship grew into a lifelong Brotherly Love and mutual respect. Another fellow student of theirs in Athens was the young Prince Julian, who later as Emperor became known as Julian the Apostate because he denied Christ he renounced his Christian Faith - and did everything in his power to restore paganism. Even in Athens, before Julian the Apostate had thrown off his mask of piety, St Gregory saw what an unsettled mind he had, and commented: "What an evil the Roman State is nourishing." After their studies at Athens, St Gregory and St Basil became fellow Ascetics, living the Monastic Life for a time in the Hermitages of Pontos, until St Gregorys Father asked him to return to Cappadocia where he was then ordained as Presbyter of the Church of Nazianzos. Thereafter St Basil consecrated him Bishop of Sasima (or Zansima), which was in the Archdiocese of Caesarea. St Gregorys Consecration was a source of great sorrow to him and caused a sad misunderstanding between him and St Basil, which was never resolved. However, St Gregorys Love and deep respect for St Basil remained unchanged, which was clearly evident from his Funeral Oration on Saint Basil. About the year 379, St Gregory came to the assistance of the Church of Constantinople, which had already been troubled for forty years by the heretical Arians and by his supremely wise words and many Labours he freed Her from the corruption of heresy. He was elected Archbishop of Constantinople by the Second Ecumenical Council, which had assembled there in 381 and which had condemned Macedonios, Archbishop of Constantinople, as an enemy of the Holy Spirit. When St Gregory went to Constantinople, the Arians had taken possession of all the churches, so he was forced to serve in a home Chapel that was dedicated to St Anastasia the Holy Martyr. From there he began to preach his famous five Sermons on the Holy Trinity, which are known as the Triadica. When he left Constantinople two years later, the heretical Arians did not have one church left to them in the city. St Meletios of Antioch, who had presided over the Second Ecumenical Council had Reposed during the course of it, so St Gregory was chosen to replace him - and he distinguished himself in his Expositions of Dogmatic Theology. Having governed the Church until 382, he delivered his farewell speech his Syntacterion in which he explained the Divinity of God the Son to 150 Bishops and the Emperor, Theodosios the Great. He also requested and unanimously received permission to retire from the See of Constantinople.

St Gregory finally returned to Nazianzos, where he remained for the rest of his life, Reposing in the Lord in 391, at the age of approximately sixty-two years. His extant writings, both prose and poems in every type of meter, demonstrate his lofty eloquence and his wondrous breadth of learning. In the beauty of his writings, St Gregory the Theology, is considered to have surpassed the Greek writers of antiquity, and because of his God-inspired Theological thought, he received the surname "Theologian." Although he is sometimes called Gregory of Nazianzos, this title belongs properly to his father, while he himself is known by the Church only as St Gregory the Theologian. Furthmore, St Gregory is especially called "Trinitarian Theologian," since in virtually every Homily he delivered, he referred to the Holy Trinity and the one Essence and Nature of the Divine Godhead. Hence, Alexios Anthoros dedicated the following verses to St Gregory the Theologian: Like an unwandering Star beaming with splendour, Thou bringest us by Mystic Teachings, O Father, To the Trinity's sunlike Illumination, O mouth breathing with Fire, O Gregory most mighty. May his memory be Eternal, and may St Gregory the Theologian ceaselessly Intercede with Christ our Saviour for the Eternal Salvation of our soul.
