BuildingMontagesinPetrel
MostPetrelprojectsrequiredisplaymapstobemadeforpresentations;eitherforpartnersorpeers.This TIPS&TRICKSprovidesaguideshowinghowmontagesmaybemadeforgeneratingplotsforthesepresentations. Amontageisasinglemapcontaininganynumberofindividualmapsorgraphicimages.AllPetrelwindowtypes maybeincludedinamontage.Somemaybeputinasmapsorviewportswhileothersmustbecapturedasa graphicimagebeforebeingplacedinthemontage.Eachmontagehassomeuniquecharacteristics: Youmayaddasmanyviewportstoamontageasyouwish Itisvirtual(notagraphicfile)untilitissenttoaprinterorplotter Mostimagesaredynamic(ifthedatainaviewportischanged;thepictureinthemontagechanges) Imagescanbelinkedtogether(iflinked,changingthescaleormappingareainoneviewportchangesthe othersalso) Textandlinesmaybeaddedtothemontage.
CreatingaPlotWindow:
MontagesaremadeinaPetrelPlotwindow.TocreateaPlotwindow,clickonWindowintheMenuBarand chooseNewplotwindow
AnewemptyplotwindowwillappearinthevisualizationareaofPetrel.Also,theplotwindow(inthisexample,Plot window1),willappearintheWindowstabofthelowerPetrelexplorer.
PaperSize:
Thefirstthingtodoissetupthesizeyouwantthefinalmontagetobe.Ifyoudontsetupthepapersizefirst, PetrelwillsetupapaperthatisthedefaultprintsizeofyourPetrelsession.Ifyouwishtochangethesizelater, Petrelwilleithershrinkorenlargetheentireplottothenewpapersize.Tosetthepapersize;withtheplotwindow active,clickonFileintheMenuBarandchoosePagesetup.
Chooseoneofthestandardprintsizes,orsetupacustomsize.AlsochoosePortraitorLandscape.
Afterthesizehasbeenspecified,ifyoulike,changethenameofthewindowtosomethingmeaningful.Todothis (aswithallPetrelobjects);bringuptheSettingsoftheplotwindowandtypeinthenewnameundertheInfotab.
CreatingViewports:
ViewportsmaybeeithercreatedindividuallyorautomaticallyusingtheNewobjectinwindowicon.
Clickingonthaticonallowsyoutopickthetypeofviewportyourequirefromthefollowingmenu.
Ifyouchoosetoplacetheviewportsindividuallybypickingoneoftheviewporttypes,usetheleftmousebuttonto placetheviewportbyclickingononecornerlocationanddraggingtotheoppositecorner.
Whenthatoptionischosen,thefollowingmenuappears:
ViewportnamesmaybechangedusingtheirindividualSettingsmenustoreflectwhatisorisgoingtobeineach viewport.

Puttingdataintoviewports:
Toputdataintoaviewport,theviewportmustbeactive.Theactiveviewportwillhavearedborder;theothers willhaveblackborders.Tomakeaviewportactive,simplyclickinthatviewport.
Whenyouarefinishedwithoneviewport,simplyclickinsideanotherviewportandthatonewillbecomeactive.

ThePlotWindow(undertheWindowstab)showsthedifferenttypes
MapandHistogramViewports
FillintheMapandHistogramviewportsbymakingtheviewportactiveandclickingintheboxinfrontofthe desireddataintheInputorModelstab.Notethatmultiplesurfacesorhorizonsmaygoineachhistogramviewport. Changeeachviewportssettings(usingtheShow viewportsettingsicon)asdesiredwhileeach viewportisactive.
IntersectionViewport
ForanIntersectionviewport,youmusthavealreadysetupageneralorIorJintersectionineithertheInputor Modelstab.Theintersectionviewportusesthispreviouslyexistingintersectiontogetthelimitsfortheviewport. HighlighttheIntersectionviewport: PutaCheckmark(clickinthesquarebox)infrontoftheintersectiontouse(thissetsthelimitsforthe viewport)
Checkeachobjectyouwishtoputintotheviewport.YouwillseetheobjectsappearintheIntersection viewport(surfaces,horizons,faults,wells,edges,etc.):
Changetheviewportsettings,ifnecessary.Also,turnontheHeaderifyouwant.
WellSectionViewport
GettingaWellCorrelationSectionintoaviewportisthemostcomplicated;butstillfairlyeasy. MaketheWellSectionviewportactivebyclickingintheviewport. RightClickontheWellSectionviewportnameandbringuptheSettingsmenu.

UsingtheBlueArrowontheSettingstaboftheSettingswindowoftheWellSectionviewport,placethe nameoftheWellSectioninthemenu:
ClickonUpdateandthewellcorrelationsectionwillappearintheWellSectionviewport.
Bitmaps:
BitmapsmayalsobeputonaPlotwindow.Createabitmapbyimportingapictureorbycopyingandpastinga pictureintoPetrelfromaPetrelwindoworfromanotherprogram.(Ifyouwishtoputpicturesfroma2Dor3D windowontoabitmap,thisisthemethodtouse). CreateaPlotwindowandplaceacheckmarkintheboxinfrontofthebitmaporbitmapsintheInputtab.The bitmaporbitmapsappearintheupperleftcornerofthePlotwindow.

Placethecursoroveracornerofthebitmapandatwoheadedarrowwillappear:
Dragthebordersandenlargeorreducethebitmapsanysizeyouwish(remember,theymightbecomepixilatedif madetoolarge).
Text,LinesandBoxes:
Text(labels),lines(arrows)andboxes(rectangles)mayalsobeplacedonthewindow.Toplacetextontheplot window,returntotheNewobjectinwindowiconandchooseNewlabel.
