VIOLET SHIMOKO (Founder) Violet is a graduate of Kalani High School and the University of Hawai`i. She holds a bachelors degree in Art. She worked and volunteered in the Admissions Department of Iolani School from 1993 2004 and is a sustaining and past member of the Executive Board of the Junior League of Honolulu. She conceptualized ClubCharm drawing from her past experiences with her familys businesses, S&S Saimin, Aloha Maid Juice and Hawaiian Brians. Her most notable accomplishment is that of mother. She is grateful to her sister, Lynn Yuasa, for her encouragement to found a leadership program for girls and to her brother, Michael Shimoko, for inspiring the Gents Club.

Mission
ClubCharm will nurture and grow young leaders in a loving environment that builds the foundation of good character and promotes solid leadership skills. Why an after-school program for girls? Young girls learn the most from modeling their parents and from watching other young girls. ClubCharm believes that a strong sense of community will support young girls in becoming well-educated, creative and responsible young ladies. Our all-girls' after-school program emphasizes fun, while being responsible and considerate of others. There are some fairly old-fashioned activities that we think will prove valuable, like sewing and storytelling, cooking and crochet, reading and even a little time for reflection unencumbered by YouTube, or Facebook, or Twitter. ClubCharm will provide a cooperative, community environment where young girls have the freedom to grow, to truly be themselves and to keep their priorities focused on what they think, rather than on what they wear. They will feel free to make mistakes and to try new things rather than stick to well-traveled paths. Its a club. ClubCharm is a loving, safe environment where young girls get the chance to be young girls. Its an environment that embraces the opportunity and builds the skills to help them grow into confident, responsible young women. ClubCharm girls will learn to feel comfortable leading. This special freedom enables young ladies to experience an evolution of self, to develop greater self-actualization, self-motivation, self-reliance and self-confidence.

The Model
It could be argued that the most successful educator of the last forty years is Sesame Street. The single, breakthrough insight of Sesame Street is that if you can hold the attention of children, you can educate them. We have used a very similar model in developing ClubCharm. We will hold their attention through activities that challenge their skills and encourage the to consider basic issues like right and wrong, responsibility, and being a friend. And well do it in the confines of a loving environment. We are creating a community of young girls who stand for something. Its our pivotal belief that if we want to bring about fundamental changes in childrens value systems and behaviors, we need to create a community where those beliefs and corresponding behaviors can be practiced, expressed and nurtured. Actions become habits. And habits become character. And, as educators [like Sesame Street] recognize that to make this learning fundamental to their character, we need to keep the fun before da mental.

We want our girls to grow up to make a difference both in the world they live in today and the world the will embrace tomorrow. Kids learn plenty in school. They learn that Sacramento is the capitol of California. And that four is the square root of 16. We want to teach them some other things. For example: Setting goals Managing money Etiquette That they learn self esteem by doing estimable acts That faith is a big part of life, whether its in themselves, God, or a benign universe Why fitness and hygiene are important Why it is that when you eat junk food, you feel like junk What our body language tells others about ourselves, and Why a first impression is so important.

The subjects are as diverse as life itself.

The Club
Weve gathered a group of extraordinary educators, graduate parents, psychologists, designers, life coaches and small business people who share our sense of mission. Were currently building a remarkable facility that girls from the ages of seven to twelve will find simply irresistible. Weve built a curriculum derived from the teachings that helped to shape our lives. Then weve spent a couple of years figuring out how to make it fun. FUN! The challenge has been to ensure that the girls who participate will not view ClubCharm as school, but rather as a FUN, after-school destination. At the same time, everything that we do is structured to promote the mission of instilling leadership values at a young age.

WHO ARE WE?

Were a collection of community leaders, professionals, parents and university students who believe in simple concepts like manners, creativity, punctuality, loyalty, responsibility and working together. These very fundamental ideas seem to have made much more of an impression, and had much more effect in shaping the lives of our children than any of the information they learned in History or Physics, Math or Geography. We wanted to build an after-school program where these fundamental values would be given the highest priority.

Leadership
We expect ClubCharm graduates to help shape a changing world. We have developed a series of environments, a clubroom and a curriculum that supports this expectation. ClubCharms curriculum focuses on the essential languages of our age historical perspective, ethics, the arts, literature and communications. Our students develop leadership skills through participation in experiential education, club government, social service, and many community-building activities on campus. One of our founders said, We expect them to come as young girls; We want to see them leave as confident young ladies.

We dont think these are unrealistic expectations. ClubCharm will challenge your daughter. It will build confidence and competence. It will strengthen her ability to collaborate and integrate into in the exciting world that lies ahead of her.
