Tribe Outlasts Liberty Center In Tough NWOAL Battle Indians Defense Struggles Early Tribe Falls To Defiance
THE HOMETOWN HUDDLE
By: Mitchell Peebles THE VILLAGE REPORTER By Mitchell Peebles THE VILLAGE REPORTER WAUSEON 1/11/14A hot shooting start for the Defiance Bulldogs would prove to be too much for the Wauseon Indians to overcome, as they would fall to the Defiance Bulldogs 47-39 in non conference action. Defiance would set the tone for their offense early on. The Bulldogs would score 15 points in the first quarter, all of which were off of three pointers as the Indian defense struggled to find a way to slow down the long range shooting of Defiance. The Tribe would do their part on the offensive end of the court in the first quarter, as four different players would score for Wauseon. As the first quarter came to and end, Defiance would hold a slim 15-14 lead. The Bulldogs three point shooting remained hot in the beginning of the second quarter, as they would nail another pair of three point shots early on in the quarter. However, unlike in the first quarter, the Tribe offense would be unable to keep pace in the second, as the Bulldogs tough defense held the Indians to only four point in the second quarter. The halftime scoreboard read 27-18 in favor of Defiance. Wauseon was able to bounce back offensively in the third period, keeping pace with the Bulldogs, but the Indians were not able to cut in to the Defiance lead at all, as both teams would score ten points in the third, making in 37-28 with one quarter of action remaining. Things would get interesting in the final quarter. After being held to only eight points in the first three quarters, Noah Castle was able to score eight in the final quarter alone to help mount a comeback attempt for the Tribe. Wauseons defense would be able to pressure Defiance in to offensive mistakes. With just over three minutes remaining in the contest, the Indians were able to get within only two possessions of the Bulldogs, with Wauseon only trailing by five points. Just as the Indians started to get momentum, Defiance decided to slow the game down, and run some clock off, stifling any chance Wauseon had at a comeback, and the Bulldogs would go on to win 47-39. Castle scored 16 points on the night, setting the pace for the Tribe. Jacob Newlove helped the Indian cause with nine, Zac Robinson scored eight, and Corry Byers finished the evening with six. With the loss, Wauseon falls to 9-3 on the season, but remaining undefeated in the NWOAL at 3-0. Mitchell Peebles may be reached at publisher@thevillagereporter.com WAUSEON 1/10/2014On an important night in the NWOAL, Wauseon was able to fend off a late rally by the Tigers of Liberty Center. With their rival Archbold Bluestreaks losing their first league game of the season to the Swanton Bulldogs the same night, the Indians had a chance to take control of the NWOAL boys basketball standings, if they could get past the Tigers. After being behind by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, Liberty Center would come charging back, even taking a lead in the final minutes of the game. The Tribe was able to regain their composure, lead by a 30 point performance by senior Corry Byers, and grab a 5349 win, remaining undefeated in league play. Byers high scoring night started off in the opening quarter, hitting a three to spark the Indians early on. Liberty Centers size gave the Tribe some trouble, as the Indians would only be leading 11-8 as the first quarter was coming to and end, that is until Kris Boysel was able to nab an offensive rebound with less than two seconds left on the clock, and put the ball in to the basket just as the buzzer sounder, giving Wauseon a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, it would again be Byers leading the way, scoring nine of the Indians 11 points in the period. Wauseons lead would remain at five going in to halftime, with the Indians leading 24-19. Wauseon started off the third quarter hot, jumping out to as large as a 14 point lead midway through the third
Hilltop Cadets Host Out Of Conference Foe Hicksville Aces; Falls At Home
WEST UNITY: January 11, 2014 The Hilltop Cadets played host on Saturday January 11 to the Hicksville Aces, falling by the score of 55-38. For the Hilltop Cadets on the night, Freshman Quinn Smith led the way with 13 points on the game, while bringing down 5 rebounds. Tim Maneval dropped in 11 points on the game to go with his 5 steals; Xavier Lowery contributed 6 on the night while Jalen Towers added 4 points and 6 rebounds for the Cadets. Also on the board for Hilltop, Miklo Abner hit a bucket and grabbed 5 rebounds, and Will McKinney rounded out the scoring with 2 points. quarter. Liberty Center would find their groove again though late in the quarter, closing back in on the Indians. After three quarters of action, the Tribe was clinging to a 37-31 lead. The Tigers were not going to let the Indians off easy. After it seemed as if Wauseon was going to come away with an easy victory, Liberty Center found a spark from their 67 center Chestnut. The Tribe defense had trouble defending his post presence, and were caught off-guard as the big man launched and drained a three pointer, cutting in to the Indian lead. The Tigers were even able to take a 47-46 lead with 3:30 left in the contest. The Indians were given a technical foul, and it seemed as if the game was slipping away from them, but then Byers started taking over again for the Tribe, scoring 12 points in the final quarter, which also opened up the post game for Noah Castle, who was able to draw a 5th foul against Liberty Centers Chestnut in the final minutes, causing the 67 Tiger to have to sit on the bench for the remainder of the game. Byers and Castle were the only Indians to score in the final quarter of action, but that is all the Tribe would need, capturing the win by a score of 53-49. Byers lead all scorers on the night with 30 points, Castle was next with 11, Jacob Newlove scored 7, and Kris Boysel rounded out the scoring for the Tribe with 5 points. With the win, the Indians move to 9-2 on the season, and lead the NWOAL with 3 league wins and 0 league losses. Mitchell Peebles may be reached at publisher@thevillagereporter.com

By Mitchell Peebles THE VILLAGE REPORTER WAYNE TRACE 1/7/2014The Edon Lady Bombers varsity squad had a tough night against the Raiders of Wayne Trace, being defeated by a margin of 73-37. Although the final score was not at all close, the Bombers were able to keep within striking distance of the Raiders in the first half. In fact, Wayne Trace would only cling to a 13-12 lead after one quarter of action. The Bombers would again keep things interesting in the second quarter. While the Wayne Trace lead would grow in the second quarter, it would only be a six point halftime deficit for Edon, 2923.
The Third quarter is when the Wayne Trace would start to pull away, outscoring the Bombers 26-6 in the period, and expanding their lead to 55-29 at the end of the third quarter. Wayne Trace would not take their foot of the gas in the final period, scoring 18 more points and holding Edon to only eight points, and the Raiders would go on to win by a 36 point margin, 7337. The leading scorer for Edon was Kiess with 12 points. She was followed by Chrisman with ten, Gutting contributed six, Sonneberger scored five, and K. Manahan ended with four. Hilltop Lady Cadets Crash Continental To Take Third At Ayersville Holiday Tourney
AYERSVILLE - The Hilltop Lady Cadets were not going to be denied...not twice in a row, and certainly not at the Ayersville Holiday Tournament consolation game on December 28. The Ladies in Red spotted the Continental Lady Pirates an early five point advantage, then blew up to erase the deficit and go on to a 50-41 win to secure third place at the annual tournament. The Lady Pirates kicked off the game by going on a 13-8 run, but the Lady Buccos went yucko from that point forward. Led by Hannah Bleikamp and her game-high 19 points, the Lady Cadets answered by hitting for 16 points in the second period while Continental had their worst output of the night with 7. The five point disadvantage had become a 24-20 halftime lead for Hilltop, a lead that they would add upon in the third and fourth periods for the win. LeAnn Joost nailed 11 points in the pivot, with Destiny Denton adding 9 points. Kayla Settlemire had 4 points, and Kailey Creamer, Emily Armbruster, Cierra Grant and Bailey Funkhouser each had 2 points. SCORING BY QUARTER: Hilltop 8 16 15 11 - 50 Continental 13 7 13 8 - 41

Alec Vonier finished 5th. Andrew Bailey and Tony Banister both finished 4th. Tre Campbell was 2nd, while Wade Hodges and Aaron Schuette finished 1st. As a team, we started off kind of slow, but we finished the tournament well. Going into the final round, we were in 3rd as a team and had a bit of setback when we went 1-5 in the 3rd -8th place matches. We fell to 4th and then crowned 2 champs to lock in 3rd place. Wedge Hodges became a 2 time champ at the tournament and also collected his 100th career varsity win in the finals. Aaron Schuette finishes his POT career as a 3 time champ.
