By L. HABER
The Sun
The Moorestown Township
Board of Education reorganiza-
tion meeting took place Jan. 7, at
William Allen Middle School. Fa-
miliar faces on the board includ-
ed the freshly re-elected presi-
dent, Don D. Mishler. Kathy Gold-
enberg was re-elected and sworn
in as vice president. New mem-
bers to the board were intro-
duced, including Albert Panzarel-
la. Others, such as Matthew J.
Simeone, were sworn-in.
All members seemed eager to
not only continue their collective
streak of service dedicated to the
public schools of Moorestown,
but also to reiterate many regula-
tions and upcoming plans. Dis-
cussed and finalized were many
different initiatives and projects,
ranging from pest control to
banking services.
A fairly large project to im-
prove various schools structural-
ly and for safety reasons, was set
to start this year. Garrison Archi-
please see STUDENTS, page 16
The following incidents were
taken from reports on file with
the Moorestown Police Depart-
ment:
On Dec. 28, a 35-year-old male of
South Lenola Road was charged
with simple assault and released
on a summons.
On Dec. 29, a 30-year-old male of
North 41st Street in Pennsauken
was charged with shoplifting at
Macys in the Moorestown Mall,
and released on a summons.
Moorestown Police responded
to the report of a bank robbery
that had just occurred at the TD
Bank, 22 W. Main St., on Friday,
Jan. 3 at 5:52 p.m. A lone male en-
tered the bank, vaulted the teller
counter and took an as yet unde-
termined amount of cash. The
subject fled on foot into the neigh-
borhood behind the bank. There
was no weapon shown or note
produced by the subject. There
were no injuries to employees or
patrons of the bank. Anyone with
information is asked to contact
Moorestown Police detectives at
914-3092 or FBI Newark Office at
(973) 792-3000.
On Jan. 4 at 8:45 p.m.,
Moorestown Police were dis-
patched to the Citgo Gas Station,
201 Route 38, to investigate the re-
port of a robbery at gunpoint that
had just occurred. The attendant
stated that a male, 56 to approxi-
mately 58 in height, wearing
dark clothing, face concealed by a
black balaclava, walked up be-
hind him and put a handgun in
his back and demanded money.
The subject reached in the atten-
dant's pocket and took between
$600-$700 cash before fleeing on
foot, north on Church Street to-
ward Main Street. The attendant
was not injured. A K9 unit from
Willingboro PD, as well as officers
from Mt. Laurel PD, assisted
Moorestown PD on the scene.
Anyone with information is
asked to contact Moorestown De-
tectives at (856) 914-3092.

In 2012, the U.S. Senate unani-
mously passed a resolution desig-
nating the third week in January
as National Teen Cancer Aware-
ness Week.
The past two years, the Alicia
Rose Victorious Foundation has
celebrated TCAW by hosting com-
munity service projects and
events to spread awareness for
this under-served population.
This year, kick-off the celebra-
tions on MLK-Day of Service at
the Moorestown Mall.
Activities planned for this day
include:
1. ARVF will set-up an assem-

shipped to hospitalized children.
2. Volunteers will pass out
brochures and staff the Victori-
ous Shoppe featuring unique

tionary, t-shirts and pillows. Pro-
ceeds will go directly to fund the

as Victorious 4 Teens programs
across the country.
3. The YLC will perform a se-
ries of choreographed flash mob
dances in an open space designat-

last approximately four minutes,
and is set to popular music. It will
also include public service an-
nouncements for teen cancer
awareness.
4. YLC will demonstrate how
to make Bandana Bands which

O
verall, New Jerseys schools
are excellent. Thats not in
question. A recent study
ranked New Jersey second in the na-
tion in student achievement and
chance for success.
Thats impressive.
The Garden State ranked second on
The Quality Counts report, which the
publisher of Education Week con-
ducts. Only Massachusetts ranked
higher than New Jersey in the Chance
for Success Index, which measures the
role of education in an individuals
life.
The states B+ grade was much high-
er than the national average of C+, and
also bested the grade for nearby states
Maryland (B), Pennsylvania (B),
Delaware (B-) and New York (B-).
Yay for us.
With every positive seems to come a
negative, though, or, in this case, an
area in need of improvement.
The same Quality Counts report
ranked New Jersey below average in
the categories of standards, assess-
ments and accountability (C 44th
overall) and teaching profession (D+ -
38th).
It has been widely reported, both
here and elsewhere, that our school
districts are actively working to im-
prove their accountability and assess-
ments, so lets leave that one alone for
now. The concerning aspect of this
study is, without a doubt, the teaching
profession.
According to the report, New Jersey
has no incentives for teachers or prin-
cipals working in hard-to-staff disci-
plines or schools, no salary parity with
other occupations, and no financial in-
centives for teachers to earn national
certifications.
This needs to change.
As we wrote some time ago, our stu-
dents and, therefore, our schools are
only as good as the teachers and ad-
ministrators we hire; ergo, we need to
ensure that our teachers and adminis-
trators are not only well qualified at
the time of hiring but are also incen-
tivized to grow professionally within
our system as well.
Our schools are great now, but lets
make sure they continue to be great.
Lets find a way to incentivize our
teachers and administrators to work in
difficult subjects, in difficult schools
and earn bigger and better certifica-
tions.
Our students are the ones who will
benefit the most.
in our opinion
Lets do more for our teachers
Our schools are good, theres no doubt, but lets make them even better
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the state of
our schools? Do you believe incentivizing
teachers and administrators to grow as
professionals is worth the return on
investment? Let your thoughts be heard
through a letter to the editor.

vious experience is necessary.

sor check-in, and will return at 6:30 p.m.

been named to Millersville University of
Pennsylvania's dean's list for the fall 2013
semester.
The 1,560 students named to Millersville

mester grade-point-average of 3.50 or high-
er and attempted at least 12 credits of
