ummer is in full swing, so get ready for lots of outdoor fun, extended vacations, dining al fresco, and some good old R&R. Surprisingly, though, summers heat can herald a slide into a not so delightful place for some folks. According to Nancy Molitor, an assistant professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, aggression and violence, as well as an overall lower mood, are known to increase in hot and humid weather, possibly because of trouble sleeping, dehydration, and restrictions on daily activities. Lack of control over the situation may also further irritate some. There is, additionally, a summer Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) suffered by about 1 or 2 percent of the population. For them, heat and sunshine become almost unbearable, Molitor says. Symptoms can include depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, poor appetite, increased sex drive, and weight loss. Extreme hot temperatures or the longer daylight hours may cause summer SAD, especially in areas close to the equator where there are dramatic differences between sunlight and night. What can you do to keep your mood shining as bright as the blazing summer sun? Energy principles indicate that, in such cases, blockages in your body are preventing energy from circulating as it should, impairing your bodys ability to regulate its internal temperature and keeping too much hot energy in your head. The best way to get back to an optimal state is through simple exercises that pull the hot energy out of your head and into your Dahnjon. Your Dahnjon will then send the hot energy to your kidneys to be cooled, which will then pass on the refreshingly cool energy to your head. These will help you maintain ideal circulation to keep you relaxed and peaceful, even when the temperature spikes. Dahn Yoga classes are designed to help you maintain this healthy energy circulation. Try

tapping your chest and then abdomen to release stress and anxiety as you open the meridians along the front of your body so that energy can ow down into your Dahnjon, the energy center in your lower abdomen. Then perform Intestine Exercises to pull energy into your lower abdomen. Exhale your tension and frustration and concentrate on your Dahnjon as you do them. Next, breathe comfortably when focusing on your Dahnjon. Breathing is the best way you can consciously calm the biological mechanisms that make you ready to ee or ght. When you become upset, your breathing becomes shallower. Gradually deepening your breathing so that its as deep as your abdomen will make you calm and centered. Practicing these exercises daily will help protect you from becoming irritable and anxious. Use them whenever your mood swings away from being positive. Jane Owens

Dahnjoong: Your Stress Center

Your aching Dahnjoong is a tell-tale sign of stuck and piled-up stress
tress; just the word itself can make us nervous. Its a part of life, though, especially today, and wed be kidding ourselves if we thought it could be completely eliminated. However, it helps to remember that, actually, some stress is necessary, normal, and positive because it can be a motivating factor and even enhance ones performance in life. Too much of it, however, is a serious threat to our quality of life. Did you know that about 9.5 million Americans visit counselors or mental health professionals each year for stress-related probDahnjoong lems? Youve likely heard the litany of difculties chronic stress creates, such as high blood pressure and heart disease; immune deciencies, which can make it harder for your body to ght infections; and memory and concentration problems, which can lead to depression and anxiety disorders. Out-of-balance stress is serious. And its no fun. What can you do? Simply put, we have to take care of it before it takes control of us. Managing stress is all about taking charge: taking charge of your thoughts, your emotions, your environment, and, most importantly, your energy. As Dahn Yoga practitioners, we know that stress causes subtle changes in energy rst, before stiff neck muscles, rapid heartbeat and breathing, pain, and other symptoms appear. Consequently, we can promote health and well-being by quickly identifying and controlling such energy changes before they develop into serious symptoms. Although we

cant eliminate the stressors themselves from our daily lives, we can choose wisely as to how we respond to stress. The place in our bodies that is most sensitive to stress and the meridian point that is best for resolving stress is the Dahnjoong. The Dahnjoong is located in the slightly concave place at the center of the chest, between the nipples. The Dahnjoong has a great impact on emotional health as it is closely connected with the fourth chakra, the Middle Dahnjon. The Dahnjoong is positioned in the middle of the seven chakras, promotes smooth ow of the bodys energy in all directions, vertically and horizontally, and acts to protect the heart. Try gently pressing or massaging your Dahnjoong with the padded part of your exed middle nger. If you have severe pain when you do this, we can say that youve built up a serious level of stress. Anger, sadness, and other negative emotional energies in particular cause blockages in the Dahnjoong, preventing the energy in your chest from owing properly. When your chest is blocked, the energy of your whole body stagnates and fails to circulate as it should, which leads to a warmer head and cooler belly. If such phenomena continue, you are highly likely to suffer from different kinds of psychogenic illness, including indigestion, headache, insomnia, depression, and high blood pressure. When your Dahnjoong is blocked, you experience feelings of frustration and constriction in your chest, and, occasionally, symptoms like chest pain, difculty breathing, and heartburn. This is your body and mind are sending you signs of stress, and you should purify and release the energy of your Dahnjoong using the holistic methods that suit you best. Chunsuk Lee

Shout Ah... Breathe in deeply. Clasping your palms together, gently tap your Dahnjoong with your thumbs, and, as you breathe out slowly, vocalize the sound, Ah-h-hh-h Feel the vibrations created by your voice spreading through your chest as you make this sound. Continue this for about 3 to 5 minutes, and, when your chest feels refreshed, stop and sweep down your chest with the palms of your hands. In addition, gently massaging your Dahnjoong with your ngers and palms in a circular motion is also very refreshing. Clap 100 Times Extend your arms and clap your hands once in front of your chest. Next, with your arms straight, clap your hands once behind your back. Alternating in front and behind your body, rhythmically clap your hands about a hundred times. After you nish clapping, move your hands out so that your arms form 45-degree angles with your trunk. Close your eyes, and, as you exhale slowly, feel the negative emotions and energy that have built up in your chest leaving your body through the tips of your ngers. Do this for about one minute, and then end the exercise. Chest Breathing Lying on your back, gently tap your Dahnjoong with the your ngertips. After tapping your chest about 100 times, rest your arms on the oor about 45 degrees from your trunk. When you inhale through your nose, imagine energy entering your Dahnjoong, and, when you exhale through your mouth, imagine stagnant energy from your chest leaving through your ngertips. Observe the sensations of energy you feel in your chest and the tips of your ngers. Tingling and cold is stagnant energy Continue this exercise for 3 to 5 minutes.

Anaheim Hills Body & Brain Center leaps ahead
wave of growth and change has sweeping through the Body & Brain Center in Anaheim Hills, California. Fueled by the desire of center manager Edward Sohn to create a healing society, more members than ever are taking the Shimsung workshop and Energy Principle Leadership (Dotong) Course. With Edwards monthly check-up classes, special weekly healing classes, and weekly training meetings, Energy Principle Leadership graduates have been inspired to share Dahn Yoga with their families, friends, and communities through Energy Meditation Circles, healing and advice, LifeParticle Cards, books, and other tools. Dahn Yoga 17th Anniversary Service Awards
When Dahn Yoga was developed in South Korea in 1980, founder Ilchi Lee began teaching in a public park for ve years before establishing a studio and operating it as a business. The business has grown over the decades to an international phenomenon, but the commitment to reaching out to the community has not waned. The humanitarian efforts that sprung from the original class in a park has expanded to various community projects by dedicated Dahn Yoga practitioners. In celebration of our 17th Anniversary, Dahn Yoga is awarding plaques of appreciation to 20 outstanding leaders who have helped create better communities through their dedication. In the June issue, we featured 3 of them and here we present great inspiration from the rest of the awardees. We hope many follow in their footsteps.

Stephanie Parks, North Las Vegas, NV

I am happy to support the many members of the North Las Vegas Body + Brain Center in all of their outreach activities, from expos to classes in schools. I hope I can continue to help them feel their energy deeply and ignite their spirit for change.

John Fenton, Duluth, GA

Sonya Belisle, Katy, TX

Ann Covert, Harvard, MA

Never give up! I worked with the boys at a residential half-way house for troubled teenagers for a year and know that my consistent devotion made an impact on several of them.

With Hongik activities, I have grown so much. The more I give, the more I feel the connections between all of us, the pain, the joy, and most of all HOPE.

Im a town meeting member, a trustee of the Caroll Center, and a deacon. I do healings with my friends with cancer. I think everybody whos doing this Hongik work is great.

Debra Jarrett, Glenview, IL

Judy Smith, Brea, CA

Leanne Garn, Kirkland, WA

I am so amazed how happy I can make people and bring them calmness. I take it for granted being a part of Dahn Yoga for over 4 years the restfulness and peaceful feeling you get through taking a class.
4 Dahn Yoga Life | July 2013

The training and the chance to go to schools and work with children with autism and to the Osher Life-long Learning Institute and share Brain Education several times a week is the greatest joy of my life.

In June I celebrated my 7th year of HongIk outreach. Doing Jigam, one lovely 95-yearold said: I feel it! I can feel it! Its right here! Her delight made me realize I may be the only one to bring them a Ki experience.

Linda Kaczur, Oceanside, CA

Patrick Edwards, Coppereld, TX

Christy Dupont, Valley, CA

I want to nd many ways to expand the immense possibilities that we can create out of the space of peace and deep gratitude; and to impact people and leaders in business and government with the simplicity and power of Change.

Over the last 5 years, I have had the opportunity to teach at several chemical dependency rehabilitation facilities. One of the most motivating factors is to be given the opportunity to teach people who normally would not participate in mind-body training.

The most satisfying and impressive moment was when persistence, perseverance, and patience paid off. After 7 months of giving diligent healings to a friend who was in an accident that left him paralyzed, he nally began to move his ngers on his own.

Robert Wilson, East Meadow, NY

Jonelle Moore, Tempe, AZ

Collette Hemmings, Portland, OR

When we share with a sincere mind I truly believe that the time, energy and money that we contribute is really not ours to keep but is entrusted to us by the universe to circulate wisely.

When I see awareness in a persons eyes, when he or she realizes life can be different, more hopeful, then I know my path is right, and that momentary surety is a great reward. Change is possible.

My most impressive moment has been recently having Ilchi Lee be at my workplace teaching us Magnetic Meditation. The energy and connection people had in that session has created a new spark of inspiration for me.

Marion Goddard, Bay Ridge, NY

Harvey Nakayama, Kipling, CO

Lynn Alexander, Albuquerque, NM

The exchange of energy between them and me creates the oneness of spirit that provides me with a purpose, the purpose for developing and actualizing a Hongik multidimensional world.

My soul soars to see that wonderful glow and youthful smiles on the faces of my class participants. Through them, Ive learned the speed of ones growth is determined by choice, commitment, and deliberateness.

I have learned to connect to LifeParticles and send them to others; to spread joy; to contribute money to the ideals I value; to teach class and share healing; to listen from my Dahnjon and respond from my heart.

The Easy Energy Meditation

Discover how using magnets can charge up your Dahn Yoga practice

s any member knows, Dahn Yoga is about energy, that is, feeling and managing your energy in order to more effectively manage your health and your life. Now Dahn Yoga is introducing Magnetic Meditation to make it easier than ever to cultivate this skill. Developed by Dahn Yoga founder Ilchi Lee, Magnetic Meditation incorporates the use of magnets to quiet and calm your mind quickly and easily for more effective meditation. Anyone can feel the push and pull of a magnetic eld, and focusing on that sensation works the same brain muscles you use to feel your own Ki energy. Consequently, even individuals who have trouble feeling their energy at rst can feel it more palpably after practicing with magnets. Whether you are focusing on magnets or focusing on Ki, that concentration brings your mind into a meditative state in which you can relax, refresh, and heal yourself. Even an experienced meditator can use magnets to deepen their focus and practice. Some Dahn Yoga practitioners are already using magnets in their daily life: Crispin Sargent of Denver, Colorado attaches them to the top of her ears to balance out her tinnitus. Yi-Ru Sethavanish rolls them on her hand and back to reduce pain. Members of Tamia Betheas classes at the Smithtown, New York center experience a relaxed and centered mental state without thoughts. Steve Chen from Fort Lee, New Jersey clears frustrated, constricted feelings in his chest by pressing and massaging his chest with a magnet. Meg Robinson of Austin, Texas strengthens, revives, and sensitizes her hands and wrists by holding magnets in each hand. Phil Coleman from Palo Alto, California increases his concentration with Magnetic Meditation because the magnetism is so strong, he can concentrate easily without being bothered by distractions. There are many ways you can use

magnets for meditation. Here are two simple techniques you can try:

center of your chest. When you exhale, imagine old, stagnant energy leaving your chest through your ngertips.

To Meditate by Yourself
This simple method helps eliminate stress by opening blockages in the energy center in your chest, which releases any frustrated energy held there and re-lls it with fresh, bright energy. Tap around your chest with the tip of 1 a magnet gently and evenly. Exhale slowly while youre tapping. Then press into points around your 2 chest and knead and massage them while exhaling through your mouth. Move from one point to another in a circle around your chest. Include the energy point in the center of your chest. Sweep the magnet from the center of 3 your chest down along your trunk and both arms to brush away the stagnant energy you have released. Instead of touching your body, hold the magnet 1 to 2 inches away from your skin. Next, touch the center of your chest 4 with the end of the magnet for 1 minute to open your chest further. Now bring the magnet up 1 to 2 inch5 es from your chest and make small circles around the center of your chest for 2 to 3 minutes. Afterward, switch to drawing a spiral 6 from the center of your chest outward until it feels cooler and clearer. Lower the magnet and breathe com7 fortably from your chest for at least 5 minutes. Focus on the energy point in the

To Meditate with Others

Have one person sit or lie down (receiver) while the other person holds (healer) the magnet 1 to 2 inches from the receivers body and sweeps it gently from the top of the head to the tips of the ngers and toes. Then draw spirals from the center of 2 the receivers chest to the outside to strengthen the energy eld. Next, draw a spiral with the magnet 1 3 to 2 inches over the receivers lower abdomen and then over the forehead to expand the energy eld.
1

Afterward, move the magnet in coiling lines from the top of the head to the tips of the toes, sheathing the receiver in an energizing magnetic eld. Do the same to each of the arms and legs. 5 Finally, the healer should empty their mind and let the hand with the magnet travel over the receivers body spontaneously; this will allow the healer to instinctively go over areas of the body that need repair and rejuvenation.

Everything Happens for a Reason

Change your life, change the world with the World Youth Leadership Program

s I have gone through lifes trials and tribulations, I have always told myself, everything happens for a reason, because some of our most difcult experiences can actually turn out to be the most rewarding. Four years ago this past June, a car accident completely changed my world and left me with a number of serious afictions, including a mild traumatic brain injury. After spending my entire life of 23 years guring out how my brain worked, it was as if someone had replaced it with a new one. I didnt know why or how to handle daily life. I spent the next few years going to numerous

doctors in an attempt to heal and get better. Someone suggested yoga, so I dabbled in a few styles, but nothing felt like the right t. Several months ago, as I left the bank, I saw a sign, Body & Brain Holistic Yoga. Before even entering the center, I felt it was the right place to work on my physical conditions as well as my brain injury. I signed up for a yearlong membership within an hour of seeing the sign. With this new yoga, the changes that occurred within me were quick and drastic, and everyone saw a difference! Soon after, I received an email about IBREA, their incredible work in El Salvador, and their World Youth Leadership Program

World Youth Leadership Program participants smile at their amazing education at the United Nations.

opportunity. Two weeks later, I boarded a plane that would bring me that much closer to my future and my true potential. I have spent the last week with a group of people from all over the world, sharing a truly unique experience. Weve met with ambassadors, toured the United Nations, and trained in Brain Education, all with the hopes of being a part of IBREA in the future. Ive always loved to travel the world and meet new people. As I have practiced B.E. these last few months, Ive seen the changes within myself and see the potential to spread that same kind of change all over the world. To be a part of this program and continue my personal growth, as well as pass it along to others, is literally a dream come true. If I hadnt been in my car accident all those years ago, I may have never even looked twice that day I saw the sign. Im grateful for this opportunity and experience, and I can honestly say that everything truly does happen for a reason. As I go forward from this point on, no matter what happens, I need to remember that although the reason isnt always clear, there is no coincidence to the insanity of this thing we call life! New York: The tour continued on Sunday, June 9, at State University of New York at Old Westbury with 550 people attending, including TV and lm producer, Julius Nasso. This video really enlightened me, he said, because it showed me a vehicle, an instrument that could be used to better enhance ourselves to take out the energy within us that we all have, and learn how to focus and funnel that to make changes in our lives, just like we entertain in lm. This is a vehicle that I endorse very, very much and, quite honestly, the lmmakers are top notch. Massachusetts: On June 11, in spite of heavy rains and road construction, 300 enthusiastic people from all over the greater Boston area attended CHANGE at Boston Universitys Tsai Performance Center.
