How I Have Completed My

GENERAL FACTS

Ethnographic Project

David Oh (Ph. D course) / Changwon Natl University

First of all, what surprised me was there was nothing compulsory, which probably meant me a lot. There was solely some guidance for us to keep in mind. At first, I strived to catch up the pace of each weeks lecture. In some sense, THE COMBINATION of lectures given by either the lecturer or the guest speakers and THE PERIODIC EVALUATION on each step guiding me to complete the project helped me achieve the ultimate outcome. Especially THE FEEDBACKS which had been advised and proofread by the lecturer acted as a role to direct me to the destination. On top of the above aspects, THE SELF-EVALUATION SHEET was, to some extent, one of the most influential segments in the course. Before the final paper, the procedure was clear enough to catch the purpose. From the very first step to determine who to choose as a project subject to timely reports displaying where I was getting. Possibly less ambiguity and fewer mistakes were found thanks to the detailed guideline. Even if it was clearly a time-consuming process, the reward was great enough to be an ethnographic person: while being exposed to such environments in which I noticed some internal turmoil and weaknesses, I could grasp better meanings how important to TO BE A GOOD LISTENER should be.

PROCEDURE
TO DETERMINE WHO TO CHOOSE AS MY SUBJECT
A. LOOK FOR SOMEONE AROUND MY LIFE WHO HAS INFLUENCED THE WAY I THINK VIA LANGUAGES: OF COURSE THE COURSE NAME WAS LANGUAGE AND CULTURE B. CONFUSED DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE INTERMINGGLED WITH MY SUBJECT COULD AFFECT THE WHOLE PROCESS C. BUT FINALLY CHOSE MY OWN MOM AS MY ETHNOGRAPHIC SUBJECT EVEN IF IT WAS RATHER RISKY CHOOSING HER

INTERVIEW ARRANGEMENTS: TWO METHODS A. PHONE CONTACT: There were several attempts to reach my mom through phone calls. I
arranged the first confrontation at her place.

B. MEETING IN PERSON: I came in close contact with her in person. This sort of confrontation
wasnt actually intended to process the interview but focused on how caring I was about the project.

FAILURES (IMPORTANT) A. Frequently I realized that I was trying to extract what I needed to complete my project. I was in hurry and obsessed with getting sources from her by giving her constant questionnaires. Unfortunately it turned out to be great failure. B. The intention was corrupted by wrong pursuit toward the outcome. The purpose-oriented methodology was totally misled. CORRECTION AND FEEDBACKS A. The lecturer guided me effectively even if I was leading myself to the wrong way. B. As mentioned earlier, my misguided intent couldve hurt not only my project itself but my moms emotion. SEEKING OUT THE BETTER WAY OR THE MORE COMFORTABLE WAY My subject and I took leisure time by joining a couple of cooking activities together. In that way she began to provide me with very essential elements regarding the secondary theme of my project which was based on the examination of close relationship between the language and its power to carve ones personality or identity. I started with these two words.
