B.Tech (Semester-III)
Third Sessional Examination (Sep-2013) Thermodynamics (ME301) Time: 1:30 Hrs Note: 1. Attempt a total of six questions 2. All questions carry equal marks Part A ( attempt any three questions) Q.1 An ideal gas is heated at a constant volume until its temperature is 3 times the original temperature, and then it is expanded isothermally till it reaches its original pressure. The gas is then cooled at constant pressure till it is restored to the original state. Determine the net work done per kg of gas if the initial temperature is 350K. A fluid, contained in a horizontal cylinder fitted with a frictionless leak proof piston, is continuously agitated by means of a stirrer passing through the cylinder cover. The cylinder diameter is 0.40 m. During the stirring process lasting 10 minutes, the piston slowly moves out a distance of 0.485 m against the atmosphere. The net work done by the fluid during the process is 2 kJ. the speed of the electric motor driving the stirrer is 840 rpm. Determine the torque in the shaft and the power output of the motor. Total Marks: 30

A vertical composite fluid column whose upper end opened to atmosphere has 45 cm of Hg column of specific gravity of 13.45, 65 cm of water column of density of 1000 kg /m3 and a 50 cm of oil column of specific gravity of 0.825. Determine the pressure, (a) at the base of the column (b) at the oil-water interface, and (c) at the water-mercury interface. A fluid is contained in a cylinder by a spring- loaded, frictionless piston so that the pressure in the fluid is a linear function of the volume (p= a+bV). T he internal energy of the fluid is given by the following equation U=34+3.15 pV where, U is in kJ, p in kPa, and V in the cubic metre. If the fluid changes from an initial state of 170 kPa, 0.03 m3 to a final state of 400 kPa, 0.06 m3, with no work other than that done on the piston, find the direction and magnitude of the work and heat transfer. A certain thermometer using a pressure as a thermometric property gives the value of pressure as i.86 and 6.81 at ice point and steam point respectively. The temperature of ice point and steam point are assigned the number 32 and
