Subject(s)

Grade Level(s) Suggested Time

Objectives

1. recall portions of a story. 2. illustrate portions of a story. story or series of related stories (you can relate stories by topic, author or illustrator) square, diamond, triangle or octogan of paper. The shape can be influenced by the story, where appropriate. For example, a story about Egypt could be accompanied by triangles crayons or other art material (pencil crayons, markers, pastels, paints, etc). The art material can be influenced by the story. For example, you might want to use tissue paper to make collages after reading a series of Eric Carle stories.

Materials

Motivation

Read the story to the class. If using a series of stories, spend 4 days reading stories and the fifth day making the quilt. Have each child illustrate their favorite part of the story on their quilt piece. Children who are able to print can add a small description at the bottom of their illustration.

Activity

Conclusion

Teacher or parent volunteer should tape together the classes squares (or other shapes) to form a classroom quilt you can hang on the bulletin board. Add a large title like "OUR ERIC CARLE STORY QUILT" or "OUR CURIOUS GEORGE STORY QUILT"

Short Extension

Consider sending one square to the author of the book and ask them to sign it. They don't always have time to do all this. Perhaps if an author is visiting your school, you can make a story quilt from their story and have them sign a quilt piece for you.
