The Baptism of the Lord

Immersed in Mission
Is it just me or does Pope Francis seem to be in a hurry? Having celebrated his 77th birthday only a month ago some speculate that he possibly thinks his days are numbered! The truth is that all of our days are numbered and none of us know what that number is! I think the Popes motives are far less self-centered. I think he sees the desperate situation of so many in the world and their need for the Churchs authentic, unadulterated and lived witness of the Gospel. The bottom line for the Pope is that people are hurting now; children are hungry now; the poor are dying of preventable diseases now; lives are being shattered by war now; many are alienated and estranged from the Church and the Sacraments now. Therefore, we have to act now to seek out and save them. THEY are the ones who dont have time to spare. So rather than being surprised by our Holy Fathers energy and urgency, he wants us to be shocked by our lack of both! The real surprise is not that Pope Francis is moving so fast, but that we who profess Christ are too often content and comfortable moving so slowly. In his recent and first Apostolic Exhortation entitled: The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis comes across like a modern day John the Baptist, pleading to the already converted, to the already baptized - to renew and embrace the urgent call to evangelize. In baptism, we are called and then sent. As members of Christs Body, we are a community in mission. As such we must dive into the deep end of the pool to assure that every initiative; every ministry and every activity from the Papacy to the local parish is completely immersed and saturated in the mission of proclaiming Christ to the world. Jesuss baptism, like our own was not simply a proclamation of who he was to God (a beloved Son) but what he must do for God (carry out His will). Today we must celebrate the unwarranted gift of our baptism by our unwavering commitment to the urgent mission of living the Gospel and sharing it with all who seek the liberation it offers! Fr. 2014 CARDINAL S APPEAL BEGINS Many of our parishioners received a mailing from Cardinal Wuerl this week. He has asked that you make a pledge to the 2014 Cardinals Appeal. The Cardinals Appeal not only funds the operations of the archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Seek First the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33) As we seek first the Kingdom of God, we have the capability of helping it to be present in our lives and in the lives of those around us. How does this happen? Through our works of charity, our works of love and compassion. Contributions to the Cardinals Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2014 Cardinals Appeal.
