SECOND ANNUAL MAPLE FESTIVAL WEEKEND A SWEET SUCCESS

In tribute to an old Fleischmanns tradition when a Maple Queen was elected each year at this time, Fleischmanns First invited girls and boys, ages eight to twelve to participate in the crowning ceremony for Maple Princesses and Princes. Supervisor Marge Miller did the honors and bestowed crowns and sashes to six Maple Princesses and one Maple Prince in the Skene Memorial Library on Friday, March 22nd. The Maple Royalty will represent Fleischmanns during events throughout the year and foster good community spirit. The Maple princesses and prince were also present at the Maple Pancake Breakfast. The Maple Festival Weekend continued on Saturday with Ate O Ate food truck owner Rich Ellsworth offering savory maple meals all afternoon. Many Maple Bake Off Caf goers stopped by the food truck to order the tempting gourmet food. Rich is donating a portion of his sales from the event to Fleischmanns First. Over 60 people attended the pop up Maple Bake Off Caf on Saturday, March 23rd from 4-6pm to admire and root for their favorite entry in the Maple Bake Off. Judges Chef Devon Mills, Peg DiBenedetto and Supervisor Marge Miller sampled each of the entries of baked goods using a maple product. After caucusing they presented First Place ribbons to Susan McLelland for traditional pecan pie a la mode and to Kathleen Rostad for her gluten free cake. A lively and spirited auction for the winning desserts was conducted by Bob Novak. He whipped up so much enthusiasm in the crowd that the auction extended to additional entries and for the chief judge for next years Maple Bake Off. The event was a fund raiser for Fleischmanns First and brought in over $1400 which will support initiatives for 2013. New to the Maple Bake Off Caf were quilts for sale. Catskill artisan, Nat Thomas, displayed his wonderful quilts which made for bright and lively decorations. Sunday morning, The Fleischmanns Community Church was the place to be for the Maple Pancake Breakfast. As early as 8am pancakes were being served along with all the breakfast fixings. By 11am, closing time, over 80 people had been served and enjoyed the delicious breakfast cooked by Fleischmanns First and Fleischmanns Community Church volunteers. Thank you to all those who organized the events, to the volunteers without whom the events would not have happened and to all in the community who came to support Fleischmanns First and our work on behalf of the Village of Fleischmanns See you next year for Maple Festival 2014, March 23, 24 and 25!

Fleischmanns Factoid The building of the dam that created Lake Switzerland in 1907 caused something of a land boom. All of a sudden, there was prime waterfront real estate. The lake was the focus of recreation for many years, including swimming, boating and ice skating in winter. There was even a small Amusement Park at the head of the lake! Ice was harvested from the lake in the winter, and used to help preserve produce. Properly packed in sawdust in a cool location, the ice could last well into the summer. Many homes in the Fleischmanns area still have their old Ice Houses.

Maple Sap Harvesting Exhibit at Skene

As long as there have been maple trees in the Catskills, folks have been eager to collect sap and turn it into maple syrup or maple sugar and in turn make maple candy, cookies and other confections. If you visit Skene Memorial Library you will see the tools of the maple trade. The old fashion maple spigots, buckets and articles about maple syrup production are on display. Did you know that our resident Librarian taps her maple trees every year and makes maple syrup for her home use. Plenty of residents in our area do that as well as commercial producers. Our own Ron Morse of Vly Creek Maple Farm has an extensive collection system and boiling set up. He sells his Maple Syrup all year.
