Overview:
l
Anti-lock braking system, or ABS (from the German, Antiblockiersystem) is a safety system which prevents the wheels on a motor vehicle from locking while heavy braking. Aircrafts have been using some form of ABS since WW II.

History:
l
Anti-lock braking systems were first developed for aircrafts in 1929, by the French automobile and aircraft pioneer, Gabriel Voisin.

A fully mechanical system saw limited automobile use in the 1960s in the Ferguson P99 racing car, the Jensen FF and the experimental all wheel drive Ford Zodiac. General Motors introduced the "Trackmaster" rear-wheel ABS as an option on their Rearwheel drive Cadillac models in 1971.

Operation:
Vehicles with ABS are equipped with a pedalactuated, dual-brake system. The basic antilock brake system consists of the following components: l Electronic Control Unit (ECU). l Anti-lock brake control module. l Anti-lock brake sensors.

Control Module:
>>If the anti-lock brake control module senses a wheel is about to lock, based on data from ECU, it closes the normally open solenoid valve for that circuit. This prevents any more fluid from entering the brake setup.

Sensor:
>>The sensors send electric signals that represent wheel speed to the electronic controller
