WELCOME to Mission ConneXion Northwest 2014, as we purposely seek to stimulate you to join the apostle Paul, and us, as we discover how we can reach out to everyone in order to win them to Jesus the Savior of the world! he whole world is a playground for 20-yearold Caden Welles, a spoiled, SoCal rich kid partying in India. On the mean city streets, hes oblivious to the so-called untouchables until a young girl sold into slavery draws him into the world of Indias outcast Dalits. Fighting to find her, Caden finds himself and his faith re-energized. Caden finds a purpose in life that he didnt know he was missing. It rips at his heart until he runs with it to the fullest extent of his ability.

Not Today is the feature-length, faith-based, first family-friendly movie to dig deeply into the global issue of human trafficking and make it personal. Two showings of this movie will take place at 11 AM and 4 PM on Saturday, January 18, in the church sanctuary.

Starring Cody Longo, Walid Amini, Shari Rigby, and John Schneider, Not Today challenges moviegoers with a purpose that goes beyond its gripping story. The movie was produced by Friends Church Yorba Linda, a congregation committed to educating the Dalits and ending human trafficking in India.

artin Luther King, Jr. once said: Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve.... You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. Mission ConneXion could not function without the hundreds who volunteer, not only for two days in January, but also throughout the year. Whether they recruit speakers for the 125-plus workshop sessions, are part of a ConneXion event planning team, or serve on the monthly Steering Team, our volunteers reflect their greatness in mobilizing for mission! We are thankful for their service because this eventindeed this entire ministrywould not happen without them. We invite you to join this great Mission ConneXion team! BY MICHAeL AND FAWN STepHeNS MISSIONARIeS TO INDONeSIA WITH HeLImISSION

it's dangerous to love Jesus in China. We had been praying about going into the overseas mission field for a few years and had recently moved to the Portland area for fulltime helicopter flight school. We knew that God wanted to use us someplace where helicopters can support longterm tribal missionaries in the most effective way. We have been commissioned by our church and our sending agency, Helimission, and will be leaving for full-time service in Papua, Indonesia, in one year! It's so wonderful to look back on the last five years of attending MCNW and glorify God for how He has brought us along. He truly has used MCNW as a major tool in our journey and we are so grateful!

hen we first walked into Mission ConneXion Northwest (MCNW) almost five years ago, our pulses quickened and we became very quiet. We had never been to anything like it. We were astounded at the amount of people, information booths and workshops. For two days, we asked many questions and took home a bag stuffed with brochures, pamphlets, coloring sheets and books. Our kids, ages 4 and 5 at the time, also became engaged in the conference. They went from booth to booth and even had some conversations about what's it like to be a missionary, what kinds of animals live in Kenya and why

o you desire to dig deeper into God's Word and see how your story fits into God's bigger plan and His desire to bless and be known among all nations? If so, then you need to enroll in Perspectives on the World Christian Movement a powerful, life changing course that is a must for any Christian looking for a deeper understanding of God's will and purpose in their life. Since 1974, more than 120,000 believers in North America have experienced Perspectives. Throughout this 15-week course, you will learn and be challenged by class leaders, fellow students and

15 dynamic instructors whose stories bring the lessons to life. Perspectives helps believers from all walks of life see how they can get threaded into Gods story of redeeming people from every tribe, tongue, and nation to Himself. From Genesis to the prophets, Jesus Christ to the early Church, and Constantine to today, you will see how God is moving, how the global church is responding, and what the greatest needs in world evangelism are today. It isn't just a class about missions, but a course on how every believer can be intimately woven into the story of God using His people to be a blessing to all the peoples of the earth.

Perspectives is also a strategic resource for growing vision and further engaging your church in missions and cross-cultural community outreach. Many churches and organizations leverage Perspectives to develop emerging lay leaders, equip business leaders, grow church staff, prepare missionaries, and strengthen their mission and community outreach teams. For more information on these classes and their locations, and to register, visit www.perspectives.org. Early-bird discounts are now available, as well as a limited number of $100 scholarships from Pioneers.

Crossing Cultural Lines in Worship at Mission ConneXion

ods people come from all countries, all cultures, all types of music. Its a privilege to speak to Him through all our different languages, says Michal Wilson, who will lead worship at this years Mission Connexion Northwest (MCNW). People who attend The Well Community Church, where Michal serves as the worship coordinator, are from a variety of cultures; but Michal is looking forward to leading worship at MCNW, because, here, she can touch people from an even wider spectrum of cultures. At MCNW, Michal and the band plan to lead us in several styles of music and even several songs in languages other than English. In the same way you need to cross cultural lines in missions, explains Michal, we'll cross cultural lines in worship. There will be songs in a Native-American language, Hindi, Spanish, and Arabic. Michal wants to preserve the uniqueness of each cultures style of music, because people can worship God through every one of them. "Let's lift up these other cultures and not be scared of the songs and languages we don't know."

od has ideas for paintings He wants me to paint before I even step up to the canvas, says Portland-area artist Anneli Anderson, who will be painting on the stage during Friday and Saturday night keynote sessions. Receiving inspiration from the event, and being led by the Spirit, Anneli will acrylic-paint on a large canvas. It was while spending a year in Norway with Youth with a Mission that Anneli awoke to a total connection between her faith and her creative gifts. Anneli says, It has become like prayer for me. It is a place that I connect with God.

Spirit-Inspired Painting During Keynotes

Anneli believes God has a heart for artists. The creativity in His kingdom is a testimonial to His appreciation for the work of a creative person. God is always working, through mankind, to redeem and restore the cultures of this world, to bring them back to His original intention, to glorify His name. Because art transcends cultural barriers, artists of faith can have a vital part in the movement of God virtually anywhere in the world. Anneli is a freelance graphic artist and illustrator by trade, as well as a painter and has shown her work in several shows in Portland. Her work has also been published in various publications and books. www. studioanneli.com

SLIPPERY

Going to tell it on the mountain? Youd better bring your boots.

Gods love compels you to take His gospel into the world. But avalanches of moral relativism, globalization, and religious ambivalence make for an Everest-sized challenge. Youll need the right tools to hang tight when scaling those cliffs: a framework for accurate interpretation of Scripture? Check. Missiology that speaks and shows love across borders? Check. A kindred community to climb with you? Check. Western Seminarys practitioner faculty ensures that youre equipped for ministry whether youre starting from base camp or already climbing. Youll find all of these in our new Doctor of Intercultural Studies program. No shortcuts. No regrets. Just trustworthy and accessible training for gospel-centered transformation.

vision: Gods people effectively mobilized in mission

Making Jesus Accessible

Leadership ConneXion 2014
Friday, January 17, 8:30 AM to 4 PM with Carl Medearis

ome of us fear moments when we need to defend our theology. Some of us seek them out. But we are seldom ready the way Jesus seemed to be ready. So how do we draw others to God in the midst of these ordinary conversations the way Jesus did? Carl Medearis draws on his experience of international reconciliation between Muslims and Christians to remind us of the heart of the matter: Jesus. During this all day seminar, Carl will give us the tools, stories, and foundation we need to move beyond us and them and simply talk about the One who changes it all. Leadership ConneXion was started by a team of

mission pastors with a vision to raise an awareness of trends and strategies making a difference in the world today. In recent years, leaders from mission organizations and schools have joined its planning committee; sharing a passion for partnership and for global impact. The topics selected are designed to keep missional leaders informed about global issues, and how they can improve their effectiveness in ministry both locally and globally. This seminar is no exception. Carl is an international expert in the field of Arab-American and MuslimChristian relations. He acts as a catalyst for a number of current movements in the Middle East to promote peace-making and to promote cultural, political and religious dialog leading toward reconciliation. He is the author of the acclaimed book on these issues titled Muslims, Christians and Jesus.

Carl, his wife Chris, and three kids lived in Beirut, Lebanon for 12 years. Through their unique and strategic approach around the Arab world, they encouraged university students, business professionals and political leaders to live their lives by the principles and teachings of Jesus in order to change their societies and nations. Today Carl spends much of his time working with leaders both in the West and in the Arab world with the hope of seeing the Arab Middle East and the West experience full and fruitful relationships through the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Leadership ConneXion is Friday, January 17, at Crossroads Community Church, in Vancouver, WA. This all-day seminar is from 8:30 AM to 4 PM and the cost is $50 per person, materials and lunch included.

STEVE RICHARDSON, PReSIDeNT, PIONeeRS-USA

Steve Richardson was raised in Indonesia, where his parents planted churches in a jungle tribe. He witnessed the impact of the gospel on their war-like society, a story documented in his fathers missionary classic, Peace Child. Steve and his wife Arlene returned to Southeast Asia in 1986 to plant churches among a major Muslim unreached people group. With their team of 40 co-workers, they developed an innovative and integrative approach to church planting called Lampstand. Steve helped start a center for Sundanese evangelism, various media ministries, two English language schools, and a major business as mission project. Since 1999, Steve has served as President of Pioneers-USA. Pioneers is a growing international mission movement with over 2,600 members who serve on 278 teams in 101 countries among 187 unreached people groups. Steve and Arlene are blessed with four daughters: Joy, Sarah, Kelly, and Victoriaall born in Indonesia.

THANK YOU TO CITY BIBLE CHURCH!

Mission ConneXion wishes to express our sincere thanks to Lead Pastor Frank Damazio, International Ministry Pastors Steve and Beth Cole, and the staff at the Rocky Butte Campus of City Bible Church for graciously hosting our monthly Steering Team meetings every third Thursday of the month since 2002. We appreciate the family ties we have with City Bible Church from our original partnership with City Bible Church Mission Pastors, Bob and Sharon Wagar, before they returned to church-planting in Uganda, to the churchs ongoing financial support as a Church partner with us. May Jesus allow your "tribe to increase" worldwide!
