Update on Pedestrian Bridges at Bridge Street and Lake Street

The Fleischmanns Village and Planning Boards are working with the Delaware County Department of Public Works to design and build pedestrian bridges at Bridge Street and Lake Street. The bridges that were previously at those sites were lost to flooding from Hurricane Irene in 2011. Previously the Department of Public Works had not planned to install any type of bridge at either location. After months of pushing for new vehicular bridges at those sites by village government, the fire department and citizens groups, a compromise was reached to put in pedestrian bridges. Upon completion of the new pedestrian bridges, the village government will assume ownership of them. As a result, the village is working closely with Delaware County DPW and its engineering team to ensure that the bridges are not only durable and low-maintenance but also that they aesthetically enhance the village and serve as a centerpiece and a destination for residents and visitors alike. Design details and constraints are still being determined but the village is working toward structures that will accommodate both cyclists and pedestrians and that will function as a place where people can pause and enjoy beautiful views of the streams. Currently, the bridge sites are being assessed for the best engineering approach and initial design sketches are being generated. Groundbreaking for both bridges is scheduled for spring 2014 with completion in the summer.

Fleischmanns First Maple Princesses Ride In Style

Maple Princesses, Amelia Pascarella, Fatima and Vanessa Duque, participated in the Arkville Parade on Saturday, July 13th. They were driven in a vintage police car, with lights and sirens, by Denny Herzberg of Roxbury Run and a member of Fleischmanns First. Had the weather been sunny as hoped for, Denny would have driven the Maple Princesses in a vintage convertible as he did once before during the Fleischmanns Memorial Day Parade. Thank you to Denny for his support of the Fleischmanns First Maple Royalty and thank you to Amelia, Fatima and Vanessa and their Moms who walked behind the car for the entire parade.

Historic Marker for Fleischmanns

The Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories is hard at work on the Historic Marker for Fleischmanns, to be unveiled on October 12 as part of Fleischmanns History Day events. (Also that day, Skene Library will host a history program, and Fleischmanns First will be holding the Pumpkin Patch event.) The marker will cost approximately $1100, and fund-raising efforts are underway. Fleischmanns First has already generously stepped up with a donation, as have several individuals. We have raised over $400, but still have a ways to go. To donate towards this project, please make a check out (in ANY amount) to: The Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories; in the note section, please mention historic marker. As the Museum is a 501(c)3, all donations are tax-deductible. We thank you for your support. The Trustees of the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories GFMM PO Box 914 Fleischmanns NY 12430

Fleischmanns Factoid
Back in the day, Fleischmanns boasted a far greater number of hotels and guest houses than we have today. The 1904 Ulster & Delaware Rail Road guide lists 54 establishments guests would reach from the Fleischmanns Depot. Rooms were available for over 1500 visitors. The accommodations ranged from simple rooms in a farmhouse to the opulence of hotels such as The Hotel Switzerland and the Hotel Washington. All that remains of the Washington today are the gate posts, still on Main Street, at the intersection with Brush Ridge Road.
