Each version of Elements is slightly different. The illustrations shown and the directions given are for Elements 11for Mac. They should be somewhat similar to other versions you may have. Double click on the Adobe Elements Icon to open Adobe Elements. This is actually 2 programs in one. The Organizer and the Photo Editor. We will start off working in Photo Editor. In Photo Editor there are 3 modes: Quick, Guided and Expert. We will be using the Expert Mode for most of our work today. 1.. How to Open a Photo in Photoshop Elements

2. Turning on the GRID Seeing the Grid will help us know when the painting is straight. Go to View, then click on Grid. If the grid has too many lines go to the top and click on Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor and then chose Preferences. then to Guides & Grid. Change the Subdivisions: to 1. Then click OK.

3. Skewing a Photo in Photoshop Elements Often we need to skew a photo if we didnt photograph it straight on. Its best to get it as straight as possible in the camera but sometimes we just dont. Go to Image > Transform > Skew Move corner handles in until painting is correct. Hit Enter/Return or click the green check mark. 4. Remove Grid Go to view and click View Grid again to remove Grid

5. Cropping a Photo in Elements With the Crop Tool, crop so that only the painting is showing. The crop tool is on the left in the tool bar and looks like the image at the left.

6. Adjusting Levels - VERY IMPORTANT! Have painting nearby to compare. Go to Enhance then Adjust Lighting then to Levels. You will see a histogram of your photo and will see a slider bar to adjust the levels. Move the right chevron of the Input Levels to the left until you meet the start of the black shape. Compare it to the painting. Dont lighten too much. Next do the left slider again just to the start of the black. The middle one can be used for middle values if needed. Click OK. If you know for sure there is white or black in the painting you can use the eyedroppers for the whites or blacks. Digital Cameras cannot read absolute black or white easily so at times need to be adjusted.

7. Resizing a Photo In Photoshop Elements Go to Image > Resize > Image Size You should see all the boxes checked! Scale Styles X Constrain Proportions X Resample X Take check off of Resample Change Resolution to 300 dpi Put check back on Change longest side to 1200 pixels. Dont worry about the shortest side, it will change it in proportion automatically For CAF change Resolution to 72dpi and longest side to 1920. Next choose Bicubic Sharper for reductions or making the photo smaller, that is if the largest side is larger than 1200 and you are reducing it to 1200 use Bicubic Sharper.

The other requirement concerns the file format. Most digital cameras save the images in JPG format, and that is what we want. Dont change it to anything else. You can decrease the size, make the photo smaller, with no problem, enlarging isnt a good idea at all. Photo will be pixilated and be very blurry. It would be better to retake the photo with a larger image setting on your camera rather than trying to enlarge it in Elements.
