GENERAL INFORMATION

These pages show typical photometric data for the following categories of luminaire: Fluorescent; Indirect/direct; Downlights; Spotlights; Wall mounted; Uplights; Bollards; Road and Amenity; Floodlights.
The photometric data for each of the differing categories is often expressed using differing data elements. Each of these is annotated and identified. Elements which are common to one or more category eg. Range name, Data reference etc., are only identified and explained once. The data is compiled in our BSI registered photometric laboratory and formatted for easy use in the specific application areas. Beyond this, we are also able to provide additional data for the more adventurous designer and can give guidance on techniques. We are able to issue data in disk format and make computer calculations or visualisations of scheme options. This support is available at our 6 regional Lighting Design Centres. 6 Maximum spacing to height ratio SHR MAX of the luminaire is calculated in accordance with CIBSE Technical Memorandum TM5 and is the maximum allowed spacing in both transverse and axial directions. An explanation of its use is given in the CIBSE Interior Lighting Code and in TM5. 7 Luminaire Maintenance Category In the situation where this luminaire is to be used indoors, this category enables the luminaire maintenance factor (LMF) to be determined from tables in the 1994 CIBSE Interior Lighting Code when the interval of luminaire cleaning and environmental conditions are known. 8 Utilisation factors This table is calculated in accordance with CIBSE TM5. Although in our data, integer values of room indices 1 to 5 are used and a different set of reflectances to align more with current ranges of interior finishes. 9 Catalogue number of emergency version, where applicable. 10

2 Polar intensity curve The luminous intensity distribution plotted on polar co-ordinates with the back of the luminaire horizontal. The solid line shows the luminous intensity at angles in the transverse plane of the luminaire. This is denoted by the letter T. The dashed line shows the luminous intensity at angles in the axial plane (at right angles to the transverse plane). This is denoted by A. 3

This data is for lighting design for downlighting. The data for adjustable downlights is presented with the peak intensity directed vertically downward.

Illuminance cone The diagram gives the maximum illuminance, Emax, in lux over a range of distances h, usually 1 to 4 metres away from the luminaire. The angle given is the beam angle over which the luminous intensity drops to half the peak value. The diameter of the beam to the half peak intensity is denoted by d in metres. The majority of spotlights contribute significant quantities of light beyond the beam angle as well as spill light, see beam data.
15

This data enables the assessment of the pattern of light on the ground.

This data is for lighting design for indirect/direct luminaires.

13 For indirect/direct calculations allowance must be made for the ceiling cavity. Cavity index is derived, and the calculations are based on the method shown in CIBSE Technical memorandum TM5. Cavity Index = Room Index x Height of luminaires above working plane

Depth of ceilingcavity Isolux diagram An isolux diagram for a single luminaire. This data may be used to determine the illuminance at a point for a single luminaire, or by the use of overlays, several luminaires. The contours on the diagram give the illuminance on a horizontal plane in lux per 1000 total lamp lumens for a mounting height of 2 metres. The luminaire is positioned centrally above (0,0) of the grid and all distances on the grid are in metres.

HELP & ADVICE

Wall mounted Ho: 1.0m Hm: 1.0m Hc: 2.8m

Cat. No. J128554 Mounting height: 1.00m

This data enables lighting design for indirect lit installations. The 1994 CIBSE Interior Lighting code gives design advice and full calculation methods for uplighting.
16 Minimum height between uplight and ceiling. The recommended limits for maximum ceiling luminance of 1500cd/m2 will not be exceeded for ceilings with a reflectance of 0.8 or less if the distance between the top of the uplight and ceiling is not less than Ho(min) in metres. Also the average luminance of all the surfaces forming the ceiling cavity should not be more than 500cd/m2. Small area of luminance up to 1500cd/m2 will generally be acceptable, provided sharp changes from high to low luminance are avoided.

17 Illuminance curve. This data may be used to determine the illuminance at a point for a single uplight, or by the use of overlays, several uplights. The curve(s) on the diagram give the illuminance on the work plane in lux per 1000 lamp lumens (lux/1000lm) for the situation shown.

This data is for the lighting design of pathways and pedestrian areas using bollards.
18 Isolux diagram An isolux diagram for a single bollard. This data may be used to determine the illuminance at a point for one or several luminaires. The contours on the diagram give the illuminance on a horizontal plane in lux per 1000 lumens for a recommended mounting height. Illuminance on the ground in lux is derived using the contour values on the isolux diagram of the data.
