STUDY ON DOUBLE SIDED AXIAL FLUX SWITCHED RELUCTANCE MOTOR AND ITS APPLICATION AS A DIRECT WHEEL DRIVE Switched

reluctance motor is basically a variable reluctance stepper motor with closed loop feedback control arrangements. It runs on the principle to align its rotor at minimum reluctance position with the proper switching sequences & intervals. Now obviously to get continuous rotation of the rotor (not in discrete steps like that in stepper motor), we should excite the stator coils one after another using power electronic switches which are capable of operating at very high frequency. Another principle requirement for this motor is the rotor position sensing & feedback arrangements. Now DSAFSRM has got a numerous applications and can be operated in different modes1. Only by exciting one of the 2 rotor sides keeping other un-energised completely & that too operating in +ve torque region to get motoring action. 2. Exciting both the stator sides, operating in +ve torque region, to get the motoring action at higher torque. 3. Externally rotating the shaft by a prime mover & operating it under ve torque region to realize the generating action. 4. While operating under normal running condition, the motor can be brought to standstill by simply switching off the control circuit. Due to its above said simplified operations, it has got wide spread applications in vehicles, because of the following reasons--1. In recent times when environmental pollution due to exhaust of fuel combustion in cars is becoming a real threat, then such an electric motor-driven vehicle is very much welcomed. 2. Power consumption in case of conventional fuel-run vehicles is much more. Even at the traffic signals, when a vehicle remain stationary its engine has to still work on to avoid high starting power & starting time. Whereas SRM is more energy efficient, can be stopped or started quickly. 3. SRM can be made more compact in size, with lower space consumption. 4. Capable of driving a vehicle at any desirable speed by producing any level of torque ,of course within the capability limit of the motor. 5. Least maintenance required as compared to the DC motors due to absence of brushes & commutator arrangements. No mechanical gear arrangements too. 6. Due to low rotor inertia (no rotor winding) the response time is very low, i.e. much faster response. PREVIOUS WORKS : The DSAFSRM has been constructed already , the control ckt & logic ckt arrangements has been already developed by previous U.G. & P.G. scholars. But all that was done for the motor , form the point of view of single sided excitation only. The settings and alignments of the encoder discs and logic ckts were made for one particular stator side. The other side remained unexamined.

THE EXISTING SETUP: The set up for our project is 8/6 pole 4-phase DSAFSRM. OUR TARGET: Our main target is 1. To prepare the motor capable of running from both sided excitation with high torque production. 2. Compact the control ckts & logic ckts arrangements in a small space to implement in a bicycle. 3. To examine the performance of the motor with the loading arrangements.(in a bicycle) OUR WORK PROGRESS TILL NOW: It is mainly based on software simulation of the machine characteristics:
