Lesson Plan
Describing Objects in Relation to One Another
Class Description: Students enrolled in this intensive EFL class are intermediate to high
beginners. There are 16 students in the class itself, with a slightly skewed distribution of gender
towards females. The class itself is hosted in Japan, and the students are mostly high school
graduates and college students (18-28 years of age). Class meets twice a week for 1 hr.
Topic: Adjective clauses
Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to construct adjective clauses and use them in basic
descriptive sentences.
Lesson Goals: Students will utilize adjective clauses to describe the relative positions of objects
and people in a provided picture.
Materials: The class will use the textbook Understanding and Using English Grammar, as well as
cut-out sections of an illustrated scene and the complete scene itself.
Procedure:
1) Warm-Up-Students will be provided with an illustration depicting a scene in cut out
pieces. The students will then write one sentence for eachpicture fragment describing
what is shown (12 fragments total). This will serve to review the basic grammar of
descriptive sentences. Students keep these fragments for a later activity (15 minutes)
2) Presentation- The instructor will give an introduction to the structure of adjective clauses,
using the grammar and vocabulary provided by the textbook on the board, as well as a
few examples of adjective clauses and how to turn a descriptive sentence into an
adjective clause. (20 minutes)
3) Group activity-Students will be spilt up into groups of 2. One student will be provided
with a copy of the un-fragmented illustration used during the warm-up activity. Using
adjective clauses, this student will describe how the fragments are arranged to his partner
using adjective clauses. From this description, the other student must piece together the
fragmented image until it is reassembled. (15 minutes)
4) After-Lecture- The groups will be called upon to use adjective clauses to describe the
illustrated scene by the teacher, during which time the teacher will assess for
understanding of the material. (10 minutes)
5) Homework- Students will be asked to read a 1 paragraph passage that uses adjective
clauses incorrectly and be tasked with correcting the mistakes before the next class
meeting.
Assessment: Students will be informally assessed based on participation in the activities rather
than comprehension of the grammar point during lecture. The homework will be assessed based
