his chapter begins with the statement, And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep (Zechariah 4:1). There are two reasons why Zechariah had to be awakened. The first, quite naturally, was that he had just received four powerful visions revealing far-reaching consequences, not only for Israel but for the entire world. The other reason for the angel to wake him up was to make sure Zechariah was not dreaming. He had to be awake to see and describe the fifth night vision he was about to receive. Incidentally, being tired is nothing unusual. The great prophet Elijah had to be awakened twice by the angel of the Lord in order for him to realize that he had not fulfilled his calling yet. This is recorded for us in 1 Kings 19:5-8: And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink,

and laid him down again. And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. Here is demonstrated for us the limitations of our natural body and the supernatural process that takes place when we follow the instruction of the Lord. Now to the fifth night vision of Zechariah: And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof (Zechariah 4:2-3). We should all be familiar with the seven-armed candleholder, as recorded in Exodus 25. Moses received the instruction from the Lord relating to the building of the tabernacle
and all the utensils therein. What was the purpose? Answer: to segregate the holy from the unholy and to prophetically show Gods intention to redeem mankind. But here something different is revealed: a rather complicated contraption. The candlestick has pipes attached to it that come out of a bowl, which in turn is connected to two olive trees. Again, I like to admonish the reader not to picture this contraption in your mind, because we can only think in earthly dimensions. Here, a spiritual truth is revealed from heavenly perspectives. Thus it can only be fully grasped through the Spirit of God. God could have caused the angel of the Lord to give Zechariah a simple statement regarding His intention and how He would accomplish it. But that is not what God does; instead, He shows him this golden candlestick with the attached pipes to the olive oil tank and to the olive trees. Zechariahs reaction is quite natural: So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? (verse 4). He needs an explanation; he wants to know what he sees. First, we see that the angel expected the question: Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord (verse 5). Now Zechariah was prepared for the explanation of this unusual vision he had received. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts (verse 6). Who is this Zerubbabel? He is a descendant of David; we may call him the king of Jerusalem, or at least, the political and military leader of the people of Israel. This message, Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts was of utmost importance not only to Zechariah, but more so to Zerubbabel. What God is saying is in plain terms: this is a spiritual matter and has no direct relationship to the circumstances and difficulties the Jews experienced while in the process of rebuilding the house of God in Jerusalem. In the book of Ezra we read that the king of Persia, Cyrus, gives order to the Jewish people to return to the city of Jerusalem in the land of Israel, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel. That is what they did, and we read in chapter 3, verse 11b: And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. That is very important for us today. We do not need to build the foundation, as it is already done: For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11). But we must build upon this existing foundation. What are we to construct? Ephesians 2:20-22 gives us the answer: And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. The Church is to be an habitation of God through the Spirit.

But we must admit that is easier said than done. Why? Because of the adversary. Peter writes in 1 Peter 5:8-9: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. Such was also the case during the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Ezra 4:1 reports: Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel. Further, in answer to Zechariahs question, What are these, my lord? the angel of the Lord gives a direct reference to Zerubbabel: Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it (Zechariah 4:7). Indeed, Zerubbabel was standing before a seemingly insurmountable mountain of opposition. The enemies did not rest; they tried everything to hinder the building of the house of God in Jerusalem. What a tremendous prophetic picture for the Church today. How often we have experienced this great mountain, which seemed to annihilate our entire work. How many men of God, ministries and churches have simply folded under because of this apparently insurmountable mountain of opposition? However as we have seen in verse 7, the opposition, this great mountain should not concern us because the building of the spiritual house of God will not be done with weapons of war, nor weapons of the flesh, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. Under the leadership of Zerubbabel, the temple would be built. He would put in the headstone, that is, the keystone to the building. In that moment of final construction, voices are heard saying, Grace, grace unto it. This reveals the spiritual quality of that house. It didnt come into being because of the energetic creativeness of the people; not because of their expertise, or the leadership of Zerubbabel, but by grace. For us this applies too: it is grace that will lead us home. This issue is so important that for a second time it is confirmed that Zerubbabel would finish his task: Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you (verses 8-9). These words are most comforting; they reveal to us that the foundation is built, Jesus Christ being the head cornerstone. For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth (Zechariah 4:10). There may not have been much visible manifestation of the Temple in Jerusalem, due to the many adversaries, but it does not change Gods resolution. Zerubbabel will finish the temple. He has the plummet in [his] hand. That means the judgment of guiding the proper

construction of the temple was in his hand. A plummet is a tool by which one can measure the vertical plumb line (straightness) of a building. It was not in Zerubbabels power, but under the eyes of the Lord. He will not only see to it that it is built as a proper building, but the eyes of the Lord will watch over it. This is not limited to Jerusalem, but extends to the whole earth. Now Zechariah has a specific question. He asks, What are these two olive trees and olive branches? This is quite mysterious. The olive trees and olive branches are the actual supplier of oil for the seven lamps! Most certainly we can say Zechariah had never seen such a thing. This is a very unusual picture: two olive trees, with two branches pouring out the golden oil for the Menorah. Who are these two? Revelation 11:3-4 mentions these two olive trees, which are identified as my two witnesses: And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. One thing is for sure, they are not clearly identified by name in Holy Scripture. I am inclined to be in the camp of those who think these are Moses and Elijah. Why Moses and Elijah? For one thing, both did not die in Jerusalem, but Jesus said, Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem (Luke 13:33). Actually, Elijah didnt die an earthly death; he was raptured into heaven. Moses was buried outside the land of Israel. Furthermore, both of these prophets wanted to die. That means they were to be considered spiritually a burnt offering. They were totally consumed by the work of the Lord; thus they symbolized total and absolute dedication to the Lord. Also, verse 6 gives us an additional clue: These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will (Revelation 11:6). Elijah was the one whom the Lord used to shut up the heavens. Moses had the power to turn water into blood. Besides, it was Moses and Elijah who appeared with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration: And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem (Luke 9:29-31). Jesus spoke several times about his death while being alive on earth. Moses, who represents Gods law, prayed to God to end his life: Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written (Exodus 32:32). Moses is willing to die for his people, even to be separated for all eternity. We can certainly say that Moses life was put on the altar of sacrifice, as there was nothing left of self; thus he was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elijah too prayed to God to end his life after he had fled from Jezebel out of fear: But he himself went a days journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he

might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers (1 Kings 19:4). I cannot think of any other people who qualify as being these two olive trees who empt[ied] the golden oil out of themselves. Now the angel asked the question to Zechariah: And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord (verse 13). As evident from the last three words, the whole earth, the issue is no longer the rebuilding of the temple of the Lord by Zechariah, neither Israels future, but salvation for the whole world. It is written: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). MC

A person without Christ is led by his flesh and the lust of the flesh; that is, by his egocentric natural being and lust. Even morally upstanding people are ruled by sinful egocentrism.
air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others (Ephesians 2:1-3). Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ (Ephesians 2:5). This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness (Ephesians 4:17-19). In other words, through sin every man is in a condition of death. Without a relationship with God, we are alive in this world, we have desires, plans, we work and have goals, we exist and have a family maybe, and yet we live our lives without living. Our existence is a shadow of the real thing, without real content, without a purpose. Man lives like a corpse, so to speak; he is dead while he lives. He is dead before he dies. Just as a physically dead person has no connection with the visible world, the spiritually dead has no connection with the invisible world. He is alienated from the life of God. A person without Christ is led by his flesh and the lust of

One day he came to a village, and while he was hungrily eating the bread someone gave him, they asked him what he had in the dirty bag that was hanging round his neck. He said it had been given to him when he was young after his return from a battle. He then drew a folded piece of dirty paper out of it and gave it to the man who had asked the question. The man saw that it was personally signed by President George Washington and assured the Native American a pension for life if he presented it in a certain town. He would have been spared all his cares and troubles, hunger and homelessness, if only he had presented this piece of paper. We often behave in the same way regarding what God has assured us in Jesus Christ. Let us read the following Bible passages and ask ourselves what they have to say to us: And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the

Dead in sins is the most terrible thing imaginable where the existence of man is concerned. Everyone is at home in this atmosphere by nature. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14). The expression, according to the course of this world (Ephesians 2:2) makes it clear that the whole world is subject to this condition. We are living in a world that is estranged from God and governed solely by the spirit of the times. It is striking how often in these texts from the letter to the Ephesians the spirit of natural man is spoken of, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mindwalk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkenedbecause of the blindness of their heart. He is in intellectual darkness. Someone rightly pointed out that through the fall of man, the ability of man to think is weakened and limited. We are all in this sense mentally sick. It is impossible for fallen man to know God or to grasp divine thoughts. The fact that there are
so-called geniuses only makes it clearer how deep we have fallen. Exceptions prove the rule, and these exceptions give us some idea of what we have lost. Moreover, every person who is living in disobedience to God, who shuts Him out, is ruled by the powers of darkness. He is driven, deceived, preoccupied, led, hunted and even possessed by Satan and his demons (cf. 2 Timothy 2:26). All children of wrath are in this condition. It is a bitter truth that spiritual death leads to physical death and, unless a change has taken place, eternal damnation is the result.

There are so many offers of a way without Jesus, divine things without Christ. Whether they be naturism, far-eastern religions, Islamic or Jewish cults, they all turn out to be mirages, a reflection that appears to be water in the desert, and makes distant things appear nearer.
Paul explains the reason for this condition in Ephesians 2:12, That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world. This is surely the most dismal thing there can be: to be without Christ, without hope, without God, in a world that is ruled by Satan. There is no substitution for this loss in any religion. No efforts at self-redemption help. The Bible makes it unmistakably clear that those who do not have Jesus Christ, do not have God either. It is a fatal deception to think God can be found without Jesus (Acts 4:8-12). Paul referred to the danger of thinking this in Ephesians 5:5-6, For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. that the Bible strikes the center of our lives with these statements. Two of these are: The head of the German leftist party, Lothar Bisky (67), answered the question in a newspaper interview as to whether he was seeking a dialogue with God following the death of his 23-year old son, I am seeking my son and nobody else. Further he said, He was a great fan of Darwin and always said to me, Dad, we must both be buried on a compost heap, so that nature gets us back as compost.1 On January 1, 2009, a well-known author of fiction, Johannes Mario Simmel, died at the age of 84. He had sold 75 million books as an author. A German newspaper wrote concerning him, Johannes Mario Simmel had no further hope. Not for himself and not for the world. Its time to go, he said. He also maintained that human beings were a terrible error of history. He had spoken in the wind all his life and written in the sand. He only looked forward to death. And he knew: nothing will remain.2 Against the contrasting background of death in sin, the Word of God now shows us how God revives us who believe on His Son, Jesus Christ, and leads us to new life. realms, twice in a negative way, to portray Satan and his realm of rule (2:1-2 and 6:12), and five times in a positive way, to describe redemption in Christ (1:3, 1:20, 2:5-6, 3:9-10 and 4:9-10). We will now consider these five positive points: 1. The heavenly place of blessing: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). In Christ, hitherto spiritually dead people are revived and taken, as far as their position is concerned, to heavenly places. The key words concerning these heavenly blessings are in Christ. Through our being in Him, everything is changed. Everything stands and falls with this in Christ; eternity is dependent upon it. Stanley Jones said on this subject that Paul, the greatest Bible expositor of Christianity, concentrates on the phrase in Christ and uses it 97 times in his letters, more than all other authors combined. Paul recognized, said Stanley Jones, that these two words divide mankind into two groups, namely those in Christ and those outside of Christ. Those who are in Christ are in life, and those who are outside of Christ are in death.2 When the Bible tells us that we are blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places, there is no exception, no condition. God comes toward us with open arms and holds nothing back. He gives us the fullness of all blessings in Jesus. But we must take heed that these are spiritual blessings in the heavenly world and not earthly or
temporal blessings, not physical or material blessings, as was the case in Israel under the old covenant. A German author named Hans Peter Royer writes, It puts me to shame to see that all we ask of God today is safety and preservation. Somehow we are wrong with this longing for safety. I do not find it in the Bible nor in history, neither in daily life todayChristians are not spared accidents, suffering and pain today. Believers are killed in accidents just as often and unexpectedly as atheists. Gods first plan is not our physical safety but our holiness and righteousness.3 We do not have primarily earthly promises under the new covenant, as Israel had them under the law. No earthly blessing of Israel, no temporal blessing can surpass the spiritual blessings for the Church. These include, according to chapter 1 of Ephesians:

Our position in Christ: in Gods eyes we are already completely sanctified and without blemish, Our predestination to sonship, Grace, Redemption, Forgiveness of sins through His blood, Overwhelming grace in wisdom and understanding His counsel, An eternal inheritance, Sealing with the Holy Spirit.

The heavenly place of power: And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and

every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: and hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all (Ephesians 1:19-23). Jesus is seated at the right hand of the power of God. It is the same power which God employed to raise Jesus from the dead and to take Him to heaven. This power is at Jesus feet. Finally, because we let ourselves be enslaved by the circumstances more than by the reality of the power of His strength. We do not stand above things, For by strength shall no man prevail (1 Samuel 2:9b). This is why we need reviving now and then, a new orientation toward Jesus. 3. The heavenly place of new life: But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly

We waste much power in our efforts to achieve something that we already have. We strive to achieve something that we have instead of living from the position we already have. You have not what you are seeking, because you are not seeking what you have! We are continually living in fear of losing something. We unconsciously see God as the bad guy who immediately takes

away something if we do not believe. Yet verse 6 is written in the aorist tense; that is, it is an act that is already accomplished. It is, in my opinion, a very bad means of discipline to threaten a child with taking away something that we gave him out of love before. If a child is disobedient, there are other ways of disciplining him without taking away what you have already given him. God will never take something away from you that He has given you in Jesus. He may discipline you, and you may suffer loss in another direction, but He will not take away from you your heavenly blessings in Christ. You are in Christ, wholly in Him (Colossians 3:3). The Father sees you in Jesus. Try to put this revival into practice by living from the place in which God has put you. You will then experience how much is revived and many things will be much easier for you. This is the framework for a life of sanctification. A person who rises from the dead will not remain in the vicinity of the grave but go to where life is. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10). I once read the line, We have no choice how we die and when we die, but we have a choice how we live! 4. The heavenly place of proclamation: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places

might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord (Ephesians 3:1011). Manifold means having many different forms. I have found a very good definition of this by William MacDonald:
One of Gods present purposes in connection with the mystery is to reveal His manifold wisdom to the angelic hosts of heaven. The apostle again uses the metaphor of a school. God is the Teacher. The universe is the classroom. Angelic dignitaries are the students. The lesson is on The multifaceted wisdom of God. The church is the object lesson. From heaven, the angels are compelled to admire His unsearchable judgments and marvel at His ways past finding out. They see how God has triumphed over sin to His own glory. They see how He has sent heavens best for earths worst. They see how He has redeemed His enemies at enormous cost, conquered them by love, and prepared them as a bride for His Son. They see how He has blessed them with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies. And they see that through the work of the Lord Jesus on the cross, more glory has come to God and more blessing has come to believing

Let us give thanks to the Father who hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:12-14).
She is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. She is blessed with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly world. And this has been made known to all principalities and powers. What does this mean? As Jesus is far exalted over Satan and his demons, which rule in the heavenly realms according to Ephesians 2:2 and 6:12, everyone who belongs to the Church and is exalted with Jesus in His position, is of a necessity no longer under the power of Satan. He is literally over all things (1 John 4:4). Let us give thanks to the Father who hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:12-14). 5. The heavenly place of fullness: Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things (Ephesians 4:9-10). If we sum up, we come to the following result: Jesus was crucified, He died, was buried and rose again. After that He ascended into heaven. He sits at the right hand of the power of God. He is exalted over all heaven, over all principalities, powers and all names. Everything is at His feet. He is the head over all. And the Church is risen with Christ and with Him in the heavenly places. She sits with Jesus there where He sits.

By Dr. Ron J. Bigalke Jr. In 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, the Apostle Paul expressed the heart of a shepherd for his sheep. The pastoral concern of the Apostle demonstrates that the wellbeing of the sheep is the first priority of the shepherd. Paul communicated his shepherds heart for the sheep in verse 19, when he referred to the church as his hope or joy or crown of exultation. Paul demonstrated emphatically the great priority of the spiritual wellbeing of the church in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming. With regard to eschatological (prophetic) events, two questions arise concerning the identity of the crown and the timing of the coming.

Revelation 2:10 refers to another reward, the crown of life, which would be granted to those believers who endure trials, such as suffering a martyrs death.
THE CROWN OF GLORY AND JOY

Scripture reveals various crowns that will be given to believers, which appear to be based upon service to the Lord. In 1 Thessalonians 2:19, the focus is a crown of exultation, which is perhaps a crown received for faithfulness in evangelism and discipleship (given the context of Pauls words to the Thessalonian church). Other passages of Scripture may confirm this understanding. For instance, 1 Corinthians 9:25 reads, Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. The teaching is that the believer who lives a disciplined life will receive an imperishable crown. Paul alluded to the Isthmian games wherein athletes would discipline themselves to receive a perishable reward, but Scripture reveals that those who are disciplined unto the Lord receive an incorruptible, imperishable crown. In 2 Timothy 4:8, Paul stated, in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing. Apparently, this crown will be given to those who anticipate the Lords return, that is, yearn for his appearing. All Christians should confess yearning for the Lords return, but when conversation progresses with one another, it is sometimes evident that some believers are quite comfortable in the present world and should repent of such foolish notions. The idea that Christ could return at any moment should result in great rejoicing. Even now in the present world, one should not view the comple-
tion of a degree, or desiring to be first married and have children and be successful, as more important or desirable than the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Sadly, there are some Christians who may prioritize life in the present as opposed to the Lords appearing, which is the reason for the focus in 2 Timothy 4:8 upon the crown of righteousness for those who truly yearn for the return of the Lord. Revelation 2:10 refers to another reward, the crown of life, which would be granted to those believers who endure trials, such as suffering a martyrs death. First Peter 5:4 reveals, And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. The reference to the crown of glory should be understood as a reward given to those pastors/elders who shepherd Gods flock faithfully. Scripture clearly reveals several different crowns that will be granted to believers. Some may say piously that these rewards do not matter, and the only significance is to experience eternity with Jesus Christ. Scripture, of course, responds to these sentiments in 1 Corinthians 9, wherein believers are commanded, Run in such a way that you may win (v. 24). Paul said that such rewards are important and stated that he ran in such a way, as not without aim (v. 26). He did not state such words of his flesh, but expressed these sentiments by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, all Christians should adopt the same conclusion that these crowns are important. Consequently, the Word of God reveals different crowns granted to believers for faithfulness, and that those

crowns will be given at what Scripture terms the judgment seat of Christ. Second Corinthians 5:10, for instance, states, For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. The Greek word for judgment seat is bhma. In the ancient world, the bhma was an elevated platform whereupon a judge would be seated to evaluate and reward contestants in the Greek athletic games for their performance. When Paul said he disciplined himself so that he would not be disqualified (1 Cor 9:27), he was not indicating the unlikely possibility that he would lose his salvation. He was stating an analogy to the Christian life, because in the Grecian games an athlete could be disqualified for not

competing according to the rules, and therefore would not receive a reward. Paul was stating that he did not want to be disqualified from receiving a reward at the judgment seat of Christ. Scripture is not revealing that eternal life is the focus of judgment; rather, at the judgment seat of Christ, the Christian is judged in terms of the opportunities and privileges received in Christ Jesus. In 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, Paul referred to the believers at Thessalonica as a crown of glory to him. His sentiment is understandable because the glory of a mentor/teacher is in his students. There is certainly little comparable glory than

The event that Paul described in these verses is identical with the biblical revelation concerning the judgment seat of Christ. As a result of his converts spiritual maturity, Paul could regard the time when his works will be evaluated as an occasion of glory and joy. Therefore, it would be best to understand that the reference is with regard to the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ at His coming for the church, for it is then that believers will stand before the Lord Jesus Christ at the judgment seat, and will be granted crowns and rewards. the moment of arrival, and other times the focus may be upon the state that is initiated by that arrival. Therefore it is crucial to examine the context to understand the reference, because it can refer to a person arriving, simple presence, or even the appearance of Antichrist. Context indicates whether parousia is used in reference to the coming of the king, the establishment of the kingdom, or in reference to the rapture. Some Bible teachers combine all the usages, and believe that parousia only means one thing, such as the coming of Christ to earth to establish His kingdom, which it does not. (More will be written concerning context of parousia when addressing 1 Thessalonians 45, in addition to 2 Thessalonians, to determine whether such references are with regard to the rapture or second coming.)
THE COMING OF THE LORD JESUS

The Greek word translated coming in 1 Thessalonians 2:19 is parousia, which may refer to the arrival of a king in classical and biblical times, and is one of three words that reference the second coming of Christ. The other two words that may reference the second coming of Christ are apocalupsis (revelation) and epiphaneia (appearing). Perhaps readers are familiar with epiphanythe liturgical season that focuses upon the coming of Christwhich is derived from epiphaneia. It is important to understand that there are different words used for the second coming of Christ. With regard to parousia in particular, it is essential to examine the context to determine whether it is referring to Christ coming for the church in the rapture or to Christ coming at the end of the seven-year tribulation in judgment to establish His kingdom. Sometimes the focus of the word parousia can be

Paul expressed his desire to visit the church at Thessalonica but was hindered by Satan (1 Thess 2:17-18). Even though a physical visit was not possible, Paul was concerned for the believers. He was more eager with great desire to see [their] face, and therefore longed for the presence of the Lord Jesus when a joyous face-to-face meeting would occur. At the coming of Christ for His church, the Thessalonian believers would be his crown of exultation before the Lord Jesus. This facility will actually be invoked at one point during the Great Tribulation period, He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name (Revelation 13:16-17).
his is an oft-referenced verse, infamously misquoted and misinterpreted by Christians and unbelievers alike. It is the source of countless vain speculations about the identity of the mark and the number. However, the most critical error concerns the identity of who it is that actually brings in these controls. It is not the first beast with 7 heads, which is of the lineage that gives rise to the physical Antichrist. Rather it is the second beast (which emerges from earth and has two horns like a lamb) that brings in these commercial con22

trols. This latter beast is commonly linked with the False Prophet, who is mentioned in Revelation 16:13. I have always thought it a telling alert that it will be a religious figure that ends up being the worlds last economic guru. A strange coincidence? No. Seen together, macroeconomics and globalization today are the worlds largest religion. The beliefs imbedded in these bosom ideologies are the prevailing hope of humanity today. As such, it is only fitting that a deceiving religious figure would preach such a final Prosperity Gospel to the entire world. In-

deed, the value proposition of the False Prophet at that time may sound like this: Take the number that is religiously endorsed from this preachers pulpit and you will have prosperity. At that time there will be such a crisis, that people will likely respond as they did to Joseph in the third year of the famine: [] Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh (Genesis 47:19). However, the intent of this article is to show just how ripe the world already has become, having prepared the very control systems that will be given over to the False Prophet and the evil purposes of the Antichrist. Why Global Systems Are Needed Moneyassuredly one significant factor that makes humans different from animalsis the designated medium of Mammon. Its strategic significance in the cosmology of mankind is more than it just being the chief temptation that qualifies the love of money as being the root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Crucially, money systems also play a strategic eschatological role as can no other form of earthly or spiritual rule. Why is this the case? There could be a number of reasons. But, very likely the main one is that Satan and his hierarchy of fallen angels do not have the power of omnipresence as does God. Therefore, an inventive tactic is needed. Here, a global commercial system offers the next most potent perch to omnipresence. There is no other medium more conducive to world control. Moreover, as Satans power has been limited during the Church Age, an indirect means of control is required. Revelation 17:8 tells us, The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. We seen here that The Beastnamely, Satan himselfhas been detained in the Abyss until that point when he will again be released. Apostle John here confirms what Jesus said, that [] the prince of this world now stands condemned (John 16:11). [] Having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross (Colossians 2:15). Though Satans powers may have been curtailed during the Church Age, the spirit of the Antichrist has been busy. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way (2 Thessalonians 2:7). Many antichrists have been at work, inevitably coaxing the world to its globalized, humanist state. Its endpoint is already nearly here. The supporting technologies ... the organizational structure is nearly complete and the concentration of financial command nodes far advanced. Only one thing remains: The imperative to pull it all together the imperative of policy. We will return to this point in our conclusions. The most pareddown backbones exist in Anglo-Saxon countries, including the U.S., Australia, and the U.K. Paradoxically, these same countries are considered by economists to have the most widely held stocks in the world, with ownership of companies tending to be spread out among many investors. But while each American company may link to many owners, Glattfelder and Battistons analysis found that the owners varied little from stock to stock, meaning that comparatively few hands are holding the reins of the entire market.1 3. Financial Institutions Become More Concentrated. Perversely, financial institutions continue to become larger, despite the clear moral hazards of too big to fail. Quoting an article on this topic: Survivors emerge[d] from the turmoil with strengthened market positions, giving them even greater control over consumer lending and more potential to profit. J.P. Morgan Chase, an amalgam of some of Wall Streets most storied institutions, now holds more than $1 of every $10 on deposit in this country. So does Bank of America, scarred by its acquisition of Merrill Lynch and partly government-owned as a result of the crisis, as does Wells Fargo, the biggest West Coast bank. Those three banks, plus government-rescued and -owned Citigroup, now issue one of every two mortgages and about two of every three credit cards, federal data show.2

The equity market value of total institutional equity holdings increased from $571.2 billion in 1980 (or 37.2% of total U.S. equity markets) to $12.9 trillion (or 66.3% of total U.S. equity markets) in 2006. This represents a historic all-time high in the amount of total U.S. equities controlled by these institutional investors (Source: Conference Board). 2. More Evidence of Concentrated Holdings. A pair of physicists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich recently published preliminary findings of their network analysis of the world financial economy as it looked in early 2007. Stefano Battiston and James Glattfelder extracted the information for 24,877 stocks and 106,141 shareholding entities in 48 countries. It revealed what they called the

4. Global Wealth Skew. In December 2006, a groundbreaking report entitled The World Distribution of Household Wealth (World Institute for Development Economics Research, UN UniversityUNUWider) was released. The results were much more pronounced than had been previously indicated by other studies that surveyed income. Wealth and income, though surely related, are quite different. Income is generally defined as the annual flow of earnings and incomes, while wealth is the accumulation of income and hoarded assets. According to its authors research, the top 10% of adults in the world own 85% percent of global household wealth (2005). The average member of this wealthy group therefore has 8.5 times the holdings of the global average. Furthermore, the top 2% and 1% of the worlds population is estimated to own 51% and 40% of world household wealth, respectively. This is a more extreme distribution than had been estimated by surveying global incomes in previous studies. Everywhere one peers, the forces of centralization can be identified, whether in North America or globally. Today, perhaps less than 10,000 people control the worlds money flows. Some have estimated a far smaller number as low as 600. The signs of centralization are everywhere. Quoting a Club of Rome member, David Korten:
While the giants are shedding people,they are not shedding control over money, markets, or technology. The world's 200 largest industrial corporations, which employ only one third of one percent of the world's population, control 25 percent of the world's economic output. The top 300 transnationals, excluding financial institutions, own some 25 percent of the world's productive assets. Of the world's 100 largest economies, 51 are now corporations not including banking and financial institutions. The combined assets of the world's 50 largest commercial banks and diversified fi-
nancial companies amount to nearly 60 percent of The Economist's estimate of a $20 trillion global stock of productive capital.3
Global Systems Affect Cares of Entire World As the global market gyrations of the recent Global Financial Crisis (GFC) attest, never before in history has global opinion been galvanized by financial events so quickly. This is remarkable. Never before has the entire financial world behaved so much as one monolithic culture, as is now evident in global capital markets. This is a direct, though not exclusive, result of the late stage globalized commercial systems. Robert Shiller, in a commentary in the New York Times, provides an insightful perspective:
It is a large and diverse world, after all, so why should confidence have rebounded so quickly in so many places? The popularity of the term green shoots shows the kind of social epidemic underlying our changing thinking. The phrase was propelled in Britain by Shriti Vadera, the business minister, in January, and mutated into a more contagious form after Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, used it on 60 Minutes on March 15. The news media didnt need to change the term for different cultures around the world. With nothing more than a quick translation brotes verdes, pousses vertes, grne Sprsslinge, etc.it is now recognized as a symbol of a revival coming soon. All of this suggests that a social epidemic is supporting renewed confidence. This confidence can keep growing by contagion, as a kind of selffulfilling prophecy, and we may see the mar-

Putting it all together, we crucially now recognize that the economic, financial and psychological conditions of global markets have come to the point where a viral media-generated chain can impact the sentiment of the entire world rapidly. Just as the Bible says, the spirit of the Antichrist has been active these past 2,000 years, despite the fact that Satan did indeed lose some of his powers and freedoms. Once this body has been removed from earth, and along with it also the indwelling restrainer (the Paraclete); the beast representing mankinds complicit kingdoms, which has been obedient to the spirit of the Antichrist, will be superseded by The Beastthis being Satan himself in the form of a man, the 8th king (Revelation 17:8). The saints will not witness his arrival. As the Bible says, Only the inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come (Revelation 17:8b). This is consistent with the expectation that the Church will first be removed. The Beast will not come out of the Abyss until this restrainer is first withdrawn. forming the minds of mankind to accept humanism and globalism, and now await the opportune use for the global web of financial and economic systems that achieves the next best alternative to omnipresence and worldwide power. Points to Ponder The day is very near when it will be possible for a global authority to completely control global commerce. Already, it is technically impossible to live without money or a bank account. People that have attempted this must still rely on the charity and handouts of those that do have monetary income and bank accounts. While the technology and the global systems stand prepared for this eventuality, the global political power structure is not yet in place. Such large organizations as the Bank of International Settlements, the World Bank etc. have not yet had their levers of power given to a central authority. That development first awaits the emergence of the final 10 kings. These final events will happen very suddenly once their time has arrived. We walk down the mountain to the Chapel of Tears,3 then to the Garden of Gethsemane.4 We will visit the city of David,5 which includes Hezekiahs Tunnel.6 Our final destination will be the Garden Tomb. We depart our hotel this morning and say Shalom to Jerusalem. Our tour bus will lead us past Gilgal,1 then along the Jordan River to Beth Shean, one of the greatest archaeological exhibitions in Israel. Then on to Decapolis, an area that was the center of Greek and Roman culture. Our tour will lead to the springs of Gideon,2 and later that afternoon, well arrive at the Jordan River.3 Yardenit is the place where opportunity for baptism is provided. We rise early to depart Jerusalem on our way down to the worlds lowest place on earth, the Dead Sea. Well pass the new city of Maale Adummim,1 keep going down the desert mountain, past the Good Samaritan Inn,2 and passing the ancient city of Jericho.3 Then well arrive at Qumran, home of the famous Dead Sea Scrolls. Traveling along the shores of the Dead Sea,4 we pass Engedi5 and will see in a distance the mountain of Masada. A cable car will lead us to the top to see the magnificent view. We will awake this morning close to the shores of the Sea of Galilee. After breakfast, our group boards a ship sailing this historically and biblically important water, the Sea of Gennesaret.1 Well stop at a special kibbutz restaurant, En Gev for a traditional St. Peters fish lunch. On to Capernaum,2 home of the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John. Then to the place of the Sermon on the Mount. Next we will visit the place of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes: Tabgha.3 Then on to Kursi,4 where Jesus cast out demons from two men who were possessed. Galilee is considered to be the center of Christs ministry. The day will begin in the direction going north. First, we will head to the sources of the Jordan River in Caesarea, Philippi.1 Next is a visit to the Nimrod Fortress.
Then to a special place, Birkat Ram. There we will see a lake that formed on top of the mountain on the Golan. Here we will have lunch. Then on to the capital city of the Golan, Katzrin.2 As we travel through the territory of the Golan Heights, we will be witnesses to the fulfillment of Bible prophecy, as we see the land being made fertile: This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden (Ezekiel 36:35). People who have religious convictions or are home schooling for religious reasons will not be given one of these very rare exemptions, he points out. Theyre following the German statute, following the German model. In Germany, parents face stiff penalties if they are caught illegally home schooling their children. The Romeike family recently left Germany and is seeking asylum in the U.S. after facing stiff fines and the potential loss of custody rights for home schooling their children.

Study on Using Human DNA in Animals

British scientists begin a new study to consider how human DNA is used in animal experiments and to determine what the boundaries of such controversial science might be.
Though experts have been swapping human and animal DNA for yearslike replacing animal genes with human genes or growing human organs in animals scientists at the Academy of Medical Sciences want to make sure the public is aware of what is happening in laboratories before proceeding further. It sounds yucky, but it may be well worth doing if its going to lead to a cure for something horrible, said Robin Lovell-Badge, a stem cell expert at Britains National Institute for Medical Research, and a member of the group conducting the study. At a media briefing in London, LovellBadge said there were two main types of experiments: altering an animals genes by adding human DNA or replacing a specific animal sequence with its human counterpart. Several years ago, human genes were added to a mouse to create a model of Downs syndrome for scientists to study how the disease evolves, which could lead to potential treatments. Scientists also have tried to grow human organs in animals that could one day be transplanted back into humanslike a mouse onto whose back scientists grew a human ear. There are good reasons for doing this, but it may upset some people, Lovell-Badge said. Two years ago, controversy erupted in Britain after scientists announced plans to create human embryos using empty cow and rabbit eggs. Critics condemned the mixing of human and animal genetic material, though scientists said the embryos would be destroyed after 14 days and would only be used to help them learn how to create human stem cells. Scientists said they are now trying to determine where the line should be drawn on experiments that use human material in animals. At the moment, the regulation on how much human DNA can be put into an animal is vague.

Private schools or homeschooling was intended only for the few, the privileged, the rich. Today, this choice has trickled down to the average family. Governments are concerned, fearing potential loss of control regarding what is being taught to the children. What seems obvious in the long run, however, is that regardless of who teaches the children, they will all be able to obtain the same information through the internet. Intellectual property is being more freely exchanged globally, and any type of special education will remain a tiny minority until the time when global government with 3628 global education will be established.
What is the motive and aim of this type of science? The answer was given by Robin Lovell-Badge: ...if its going to lead to a cure for something horrible. What happens after the cure? Here the Bible answers: And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). There is another unmentioned reason, and that is mans desire to prove his animalistic nature, thereby confirming evolution. If man indeed is an evolutionary product of animals, then no limits should be placed on this type of science. No wonder the Bible identifies the epitome of evil, Antichrist, and the false prophet as animals (beasts). While bankers in the capitalist west are being scorned by the public and government in the wake of the financial crisis, their counterparts in communist China are being lauded as selfless guardians of national stability and social harmony.
During the past six decades, the Communist partys propaganda machine has churned out a list of model workers, highlighting memorable characters such as iron man Wang Jinxi, famed for his exploits in Chinas oil fields, and Shi Chuanxiang, the night-soil collector who spent years shoveling excrement out of public lavatories. In the run-up to the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Peoples Republic of China on October 1, the party is rolling out familiar proletarian icons, while adding new heroes for the masses to emulate. Wang Hongmei, deputy president of the Linfen branch of China Construction Bank, has been honored as a model worker for helping clients manage their finances and save money. Xu Zanjun, Olympics office director at Bank of Chinas Beijing branch, has been praised for her selfless devotion to financial services during the sporting event. Amidst the deepening and spreading financial crisis . . . these financial sector cadres overcame difficulties, strived to maintain growth, protect peoples livelihoods, maintain stability and wholly promote socialist political and cultural construction as well as the grand project of constructing the party, said the citation announcing the awards.
Nine of these modern model workers are touring the country and speaking to gatherings at which attendance is mandatory. In Beijing, the crowd broke into spontaneous applause and . . . professed to be convinced the financial sector will overcome all difficulties and challenges under the leadership of the Communist party of Chinas Central Committee, according to the governments website. The praise for the finance sector buttresses the broader propaganda message of the past year, contrasting the resilience of the Chinese system with the banking crisis in the west.

Nevertheless, the Chinese banking industry has done remarkably well, in light of the destructive force of new financial collapse in the Western world. Usual practice is to notify respective authorities if you are willing to observe something. In this case, the Embassy should have informed the Ministry of Internal Affairs that it would like to send an observer to the rally. If the Ministry of Internal Affairs issued permission, than the observers presence at the rally would be legitimate. He added that observing unauthorized rallies the way the American Embassy did could be just a pretext. You know that now there are very many indirect [contacts with the opposition movements] through various non-governmental organizations. You can support and provide help to many movements. The Embassy would not interfere directly. Such interference would have been careless and would have violated the rules of the country where the Embassy is accredited, Milosevic said.

Germanys finance minister has called for a global tax to be imposed on financial transactions in a bid to end what he derided as binge-drinking on markets.

It added that the present system, under which the dollar acts as the worlds reserve currency, should be subject to a wholesale reconsideration. Although a number of countries, including China and Russia, have suggested replacing the dollar as the worlds reserve currency, the UNCTAD report is the first time a major multinational institution has posited such a suggestion. In essence, the report calls for a new Bretton Woods-style system of managed international exchange rates, meaning central banks would be forced to intervene and either support or push down their currencies depending on how the rest of the world economy is behaving. The proposals would also imply that surplus nations such as China and Germany should stimulate their economies further in order to cut their own imbalances, rather than, as in the present system, deficit nations such as the UK and US having to take the main burden of readjustment. Replacing the dollar with an artificial currency would solve some of the problems related to the potential of countries running large deficits and would help stability, said Detlef Kotte, one of the reports authors. But you will also need a system of managed exchange rates. Countries should keep real exchange rates [adjusted for inflation] stable. Central banks would have to intervene and if not they would have to be told to do so by a multilateral institution such as the International Monetary Fund. Although many economists have pointed out that the economic crisis owed more to the malfunctioning of the post-Bretton Woods system, until now no major institution, including the G20, has come up with an alternative.

Did God Stop CERN from Discovering the God Particle?

The great quantum physicist Niels Bohr once said a colleagues new theory was crazy, but perhaps not crazy enough to be correct.
Two scientists seem to have taken that approach to heart when they speculated that God may have shut down the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva to keep it from discovering the elusive God particle. According to an essay in the New York Times, the scientists are trying to explain why the collider, the worlds largest particle accelerator turned on with great fanfare in September 2008 by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), was closed down for major repairs just over a week later.
The 3 billion-euro collider was supposed to track down the Higgs boson, a subatomic particle believed to have given mass to the universe milliseconds after the Big Bang created it some 15 billion years ago. Physicists think this minuscule speck of matter, if ever found, could explain the mysterious code at the origin of the physical world. To know this would be to know the mind of God, as Einstein put it. The Nobel Prize winning physicist Leon Lederman dubbed the Higgs boson the God particle in a book of the same name 15 years ago. Now, Holger Bech Nielsen of the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen has reached back to the God symbolism to explain what went wrong at CERN. He and Masao Ninomiya of the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kyoto have suggested, as Times science writer Dennis Overbye put it, that the hypothesized Higgs boson, which physicists hope to produce with the collider, might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward near-collapse of the world financial markets sapped the economic base on which that muscle relied. The report also claimed that the U.S. had lost traction in its efforts to contain Irans nuclear program and bring peace to the Middle East. Clearly the U.S. share of global power, however measured, is in decline, the report said. The head of another respected London think tank, Robin Niblett of Chatham House, said the rise in the relative power of China, India, Russia and the European Union has made it harder for the U.S. to exercise its influence. The think tanks report said Obama could help restore the United States standing by working with other nations to contain emerging threats to its position as the worlds preeminent power. Controlling the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea would require help from regional allies, the report said. Nearly 1 in 4 People Now Follow Islam

The global Muslim population stands at 1.57 billion, meaning that nearly one in four people in the world practice Islam, according to a new report billed as the most comprehensive of its kind.
The project, three years in the making, also presents a portrait of the Muslim world that might surprise some. For instance, Germany has more Muslims than Lebanon, China has more Muslims that Syria, Russia has more Muslims than Jordan and Libya combined, and Ethiopia has nearly as many Muslims as Afghanistan. This whole idea that Muslims are Arabs and Arabs are Muslims is just obliterated by this report, said Amaney Jamal, an assistant professor of politics at Princeton University who reviewed an advance copy. In Israel, out of the 1,513,200 Israeli Arabs, about 83% are Muslims. Some 93% of the approximately 2.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank are Muslim, as are 99% of the 1.5 million Gazans. Pew officials call the report the most thorough on the size and distribution of adherents of the worlds second-largest religion, after Christianity, which has an estimated 2.1 billion to 2.2 billion followers. The report provides further evidence that while the heart of Islam might beat in the Middle East, its greatest numbers lie in Asia, where more than 60% of the worlds Muslims live. A future Pew Forum project, scheduled to be released in 2010, will build on the reports data to estimate growth rate among Muslim populations and project future trends. A similar study on global Christianity is planned to begin next year.

Magid, who grew up in Sudan, said he did not meet someone who was Jewish until after he had moved to the U.S. in his 20s, and he never imagined having such a close relationship with a rabbi. Last year, Utah became the first state to shift to a 10hour-a-day four-day work week for many government employees, shutting down nonessential services on Fridays.
The state has saved 13% on energy costs and reduced highway congestion and emissions. Jeff Herring, head of human resources for the state government in Utah, says 83% of employees like the new schedule and that overtime and the use of paid leave are down: The employees themselves say they are more productive. Could a four-day week spread nationwide? Cash-strapped state and local governments across the country are considering following Utahs lead. New York assemblyman Michael Gianaris, a Democrat, recently suggested that a four-day week for employees of his state could save $30 million per year. The four-day week is catching on in the private sector, toobut for different reasons. Rex Facer, an associate professor at Brigham Young University, points out that many businesses cant afford to be open just four days a week. So instead, theyre asking employees to work overlapping four-day shiftsand often to take corresponding cuts in pay. While such a policy

We have gotten used to the five-day workweek, but now the State of Utah is experimenting with a four-day workweek. Both of these practices stand in contrast to the commandment of the Lord, Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates (Exodus 20:9-10). In this case, money is the issue. The government needs to save in order to meet their reduced budget. This four-day workweek is not something new, but has been experimented in many European countries with a certain
degree of success. What this four-day workweek does not reveal is the additional activity that modern man is involved in, such as earning extra money, hobbies, sports etc. With a four-day workweek, people will have more time to spend their money because retail stores, particularly in the United States, are often open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. So this means more time for shopping and more possessions, which can only lead to more time in worshiping materialism. The communists in the Soviet Union tried, although unsuccessfully, to implement a five-day week: work four and rest one, but that system did not last long. Will the four-day workweek remain? We think so based on the fact that man will violate all of Gods ordained principles.

This particular preacher was carrying on about the ecumenical movement and how glad he will be when all religions will be worshiping together and so on. I mentioned that I take my grandchildren to that church with me and was going to quit going there. You told me if someone was preaching wrongly to just eat the meat and spit out the bones like you were eating fish. You also said that someone had asked Wim Malgo the same questions and that is what he told them to do. That is fine and dandy if you know what is meat and what is bones. I am knowledgeable in most Bible teachings etc., but what about other people

Answer: When the preachers motive is to proclaim hope for religious unity, then he is not preaching the Gospel. Such a person is preaching the anti-Christian gospel. Scripture makes it clear that the true Church of Jesus Christ is already perfectly one. Jesus prayed,I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me (John 17:23). That prayer was, is, and will be answered until

This will be at the end of the tribulation, not at the beginning of the time of the tribulation (News From Israel, October 2009, pg. 11). Joel 3:9-14: God is telling His people that judgment will come upon them and they should get ready for war. Just like today. His people know that the world will come upon them. But what they dont know is that God will be in control. I dont know that this is exactly how it will be, but it is the way I see it at this time. God be with you.

One Shall Be Taken Dear Mr. Froese, Im writing regarding a letter in the November 2009 edition of Midnight Call. A believer wrote in answer to a question about Chronology. It was well answered by him or her, and your response helped also to define a situation of which we should always be aware in these times when Gods judgment seems to be falling on our land. One point the writer made does seem to be in dispute, and while it has little effect on the truth of the letter, it does seem
out of place in the chronology. The quote from the 17th chapter of Luke about one being taken and one being left is not, I believe, in reference to the Rapture. As it was explained to me in my reading of books on prophecy by authors whom I greatly respect, this Scripture is quite different from the Rapture. It refers to the time at the end of the Tribulation and before the Millennial reign of our Lord begins. It involves those who have survived the Tribulation. Those taken are going to Judgment; hence Jesus answer to those who asked Him where the ones taken are going, Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather. Further, aside from Jesus promise in John 14 to come back and take His disciples with Him to His Fathers House, there had been no mention of the Rapture un-
til Paul talked about it in his first letter to the Corinthians 15:50-55. This difference in understanding of this Scripture will have little effect on those of us who will be with Jesus when the end of the Tribulation occurs, and the truth and encouragement of the writers letter and your response is a reminder of what is awaiting us who trust in Jesus, who have asked for forgiveness of our sins and committed our lives to him. Answer: The Rapture is an event foreshadowed even in the Old Testament; for example, Elijah, or Isaiah 57:1: The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. Note also that the event describing His return is demonstrated in a parable, to reinforce the need to be ready at all times. Luther makes this issue a little plainer when he translates this: One shall be accepted, the other one be rejected. In Lukes report, the disciples asked: Where Lord? He then answers: Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together. A better translation would be vultures instead of eagles, because vultures eat the dead body. Read John 6:53-57. These are some of the reasons why I believe we can use the Matthew 24 event to illustrate the Rapture. When we are caught up to
Spirit, Soul and Body Dear Editor: I want to first state that I love your magazine, and look forward to receiving it every month. I felt the need to write to you to address a response you made in the October 2009 issue on the topic, Animal Soul. You made a few assertions that I have not found in the Bible. I may be wrong on this, but I feel strongly about being silent where God is silent. One assertion you made was that Only man is created in the image of God and consists of spirit, soul and body. I agree that the Bible says man is created in Gods image, but it does not say anything about whether we are the only ones created in His image. You are also suggesting that you know exactly what that phrase means. We can speculate as to what being made in Gods image means, but we cannot dogmatically declare we know this means we have a spirit whereas other creatures do not. Another quote from you was: Modern man is attempting to eradicate Gods ordained separation between man and beast, particularly those who are proponents of evolution. The only ordained separation I find in Scripture is that man was given dominion over the
earth. This hardly declares whether or not animals have a spirit or go to heaven. In fact, there is a Scripture in Ecclesiastes 3:18-21, where that very question is asked but not answered. I realize the author here is speaking with a worldly view, but the reality is that there is no answer to the question about the spirit of animals, or whether or not they go to heaven. I do not believe in the Humanist religion of evolution, but I am quite impressed with the significance of animals throughout Scripture. I cannot prove this by Scripture, but I believe the God-ordained animal sacrifices suggest that God receives the spirits of these animals that were killed for sin. I know that is speculation, but I admit such. We are created beings by God just like animals. God does have a higher standard for us as his creature, just as angels are held to a higher standard than us. We are all created by God and should approach Scripture according to what it says, and not declare what it does not say. I think you know that, and pardon my tone, but I hear this taught regularly on this subject and others where things are added to Scripture. Thank you and God bless you.

ated someone else besides Adam and Eve in His image. Romans 8:19 says, the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. To wait requires a soul; for example, to make a decision of where and when to go and what and what not to eat. But an animal cannot reason; it has no intellectual capacity. The animal has not eaten from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. An animal can be trained to help man, but can also be trained to hurt, even kill men. Evolution tries to make us believe that animals can reason and make intelligent decisions, but such is not the case; the instinct God has given to every animal is the limit, but no more. It is not without reason that the Antichrist and the false prophet are called animals (KJV translation beasts). Their spirit has become so immune to God that they no longer can think or respond in a spiritual manner. Why were animals used for sacrifice? Because the serpent was first in line to be deceived by Satan (Genesis 3:1). The serpent then deceived Eve, the woman; thats why the woman is excluded from the priests office. When dealing with this and other subjects such as, Will we see our loved ones in Heaven?, we need to remember Gods Word, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him (1 Corinthians 2:9). Heaven and eternity are something totally out of this world. For example, Jesus dissolves Gods ordained family with the words, For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in
heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother (Matthew 12:50). That is the answer He gave to the one who asked, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee (verse 47). The words, Behold, I make all things new are so overwhelming that we cannot even grasp the things He has prepared for them that love Him.
The Year 2012 Dear Sir, I am sure you are already familiar with Jack Van Impe. For several months I have held onto the page enclosed [regarding December 21, 2012 being earths final day]. As I did watch this program last year, I placed an order in the mail for a book from this ministry. The order was lost in the mail and the book never came. My check never cleared the bank. My sister told me divine intervention was involved. I will not argue with that. Later, I stopped watching this program that is here on my TV on Sunday night at 10:00. This idea that this prediction will come true is a little bit alarming to me. I am 78 years old, so I may be six feet under by this date. I do not know the verse right now, but I do know Jesus told the disciples, I do not know when I will return to earth. Only my Heavenly Father knows that.
