LOOKING BACK & MOVING ON! ARE YOU READY?

Get ready for great things to happen in 2014, and one of the greatest happenings will be our 40th Anniversary! Sixty-five people joined Reverend Glenn Atchinson on December 1, 1974 to establish The United Presbyterian Church in Fountain Hills; however, on March 20, 1983, the name was changed to Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. Three of our members (Jayne Haynes, and Ann and Earl Stavely) were there from the beginning, and we are looking forward to hearing more about their 40 years of experience at FHPC sometime during the year. Our year long anniversary observance starts out with our January 12th Kick-Off Worship Services and Western BBQ. We are planning a slide presentation of the beginning years along with an introduction of our official kick-off by Pastor Bill at worship. At 4:30 p.m. that day, the special dinner will include pulled pork, chicken, ribs, potato salad, baked beans, etc. Tickets are being sold in the Fellowship Center on Sundays between worship and in the office during the week. Your cost is $10 for adults, and $1.00 for children under 10 (special menu of chicken tenders and fruit). Dont forget to wear your most western get-up to church and the BBQ. There is going to be a prize for the best-dressed

western person at the BBQ, activities for the kids, fun activities for the adults, and other great entertainment. Our committee has been meeting since early October to make sure our 40th year is meaningful and fun for the whole family. In addition to our January 12th Kick-Off, we have planned the following activities during our Anniversary Year: April 27: June 8: Remembrance Brunch Birthday Party with lots of balloons, music, hot dogs, etc. Its a Surprise! The operational results for November contain some good news and some bad news. The good news is that Income exceeded expectations. The bad news is that Expenses also exceeded expectations. Combining the two sides, the Church recognized a net ($2,042) budgetary shortfall for November. While not desirable, it simply eroded some favorable results from previous months. As we head into the final month of 2013, we need to watch both sides of the equation Income and Expenses to ensure we end the year on Plan. I am confident that, with your help, we will do just that. The first great commandment is to love the Lord your God with your whole heart and mind and soul . . .To do this, we must know Him. Beginning Monday night, January the 6th, 6:30 p.m.8:30 p.m. we will take a journey with Beth Moore through the gospel of Luke. The video filmed in Israel will take us through the life and death of Jesus of Nazareth. For those ladies who dont go out at night, the study will be offered on Tuesday mornings beginning January 7th from 9 to 11 a.m. Please come and bring a friend or neighbor. All are welcome. Remember, if you schedule your appointment online you will receive a $10.00 coupon (one per family) toward any purchase you make. This coupon will be e-mailed to you when you receive your photo appointment date reminder. Also, bring a nonperishable food item and you will receive a $5.00 off coupon (one per family). These food items will be donated to Extended Hands Food Bank. . Final sittings are scheduled for January 9, 10, and 11 in the Education Classrooms just across the playground from the Fellowship Center. Please allow one hour for your sitting.

Stewardship
Thanks to your generous pledges we can continue doing Gods work here on the hill. We will continue to evaluate and nurture programs with Gods help. We also ask for your ideas on ways we can improve our reaching out to others. In addition to the Treasure element of Stewardship, any contribution you can make in Time and Talent would go a long way in helping achieve the goals set forth by church leaders. If you are interested, please seek out an Elder or Deacon to discuss possibilities. Ask what they are doing and what you can do to be a part of it. Thank you again for your support. Mission Ministry
delivered the gifts to McDowell Mountain School on Wednesday December 18th. Thank you to all who so graciously selected and bought for these local children. Indian Angels were available by the angel tree. We partnered with Fort McDowell Reservation again this year. They selected a tribe on the Hopi reservation. We agreed to by things for 12 foster children that live on the reservation. Terri Schmidt delivered them to Fort McDowell on December 22nd. What angels the congregation, doesnt select, the Mission Committee purchased gifts for and placed in bags. Terri Schmidt and Susan Owens, Elders

Extended Hands
We continue to help Extended Hands Food Banks Friday Night Fish Fry. Thank you to Susan Lickman, Melba Versaw, Susan Owens and Susans Mother, Holly Sambora, and Terri Schmidt for helping on December 6th. January 3rd will be our next time to help out with the Fish Fry. We continue to collect food every Sunday and loose change for the Food Bank. We collected 33 frozen Turkeys for the Holidays for the food bank.

Changing Lives Center

Susan Owens and Terri Schmidt bought Christmas stockings and toys and gifts for the Women and Children at Changing Lives Center. There are approx. 40 kids and 60 Women. Stan Jones, Nancy Saine, Barbara Oakeson, Susan Owens, and Terri Schmidt then stuffed the stockings with age appropriate gifts. They were delivered on Monday December 16th; Susan and Terri gave them to the Women before their Devotions. The ladies came up and gave us hugs or shook our hands with gratitude. We also gave Changing Lives Center $200.00 for Holiday meals. We also gave Phoenix Rescue Mission $200.00 for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for the homeless down in Phoenix.

Meals for local Families

Susan Owens and Terri Schmidt bought supplies for a Christmas dinner for 8 local and needy families. The High School Principal and office staff will pick one boy and girl from each grade and notify their families that they have been selected to receive a full Christmas dinner. This included a $25.00 gift card at Safeway for the meat and fresh produce or rolls. We did this last year and the families were so grateful. These meals go strictly to needy families here in Fountain Hills. These were some of the things we did in December. We are looking forward to the New Year and more projects to help our neighbors who may be in need. If you feel that you want to help with some of our projects you are welcomed to join our committee. We meet the second Monday of the month, you can check with the office for times.

Arizona Brain foods

A check of $1000.00 was also sent to Arizona Brain foods to help with the expense of the weekend bags. This is food brought back to Fountain Hills for kids in the Charter School, Middle School and the grade school. This food is sent home with the kids for them to have food on weekends. There are so many children here in Fountain Hills that are hungry on weekends; this is a small amount of money that helps these kids. This is a joint effort with several other Churches.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
MISSION PROJECT HOLIDAY BOXES FOR OUR TROOPS It takes three long months in order for our Holiday Boxes for the Troops project to reach completion. 25 boxes were shipped to Afghanistan and Kuwait on December 9th, most headed for the far remote mountainous areas of Afghanistan. Because of the success of our please sign Christmas Cards campaign, a minimum of 25 cards were placed in each box. I know that will in itself place a lot of smiles on the faces of our guys/gals so far from home. Each box contained toiletries, magazines, games, socks, t-shirts and snacks. Many thanks to the Deacons and everyone else who donated various items for the boxes and/or funds to help cover shipping costs. Attached is a picture of a group of soldiers and airmen opening up their boxes. Just look at the smiles on those faces; makes all the hard work worthwhile.

The 2014 Sweethearts Brunch

The Mens Fellowship will once again offer what may well be the best opportunity of the year for the men of our church to show their Special Sweethearts just how much they are appreciated. We are talking about the annual Sweethearts Brunch, which consists of a catered brunch and some wonderful entertainment. It all takes place on February 8 in the friendly confines of our Fellowship Center. Once again, the very capable Jim Bates is in charge. He and his supporting cast have planned a great event. You know it will be a memorable experience. Dont miss it!! Tickets for you and your sweetheart will be available in the Fellowship Center on January 26 and February 2, following worship service. You can also buy tickets during normal working hours at the Church office from January 27 through February 7.

JANUARY

Its a brand new year and our church is just beginning to celebrate our 40th year as a congregation. We are busy with activities so you have many choices for being involved. I wanted to paraphrase some of the leaders notes from the advent devotional provided this year. We join small groups, thinking about what we get from them, forgetting what God gets from our gatherings. When we get together to talk about Him and honor His name God is delighted. Isnt it amazing that these times are so special God calls for a scrapbook or book of remembrance to be put together for Him of what people say. He counts those who gather as his special possession. Then those who revered the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord took note and listened, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who revered the Lord and thought on his name. They shall be mine says the Lord of hosts, my special possession on the day when I act. Malachi 3:1617 Jesus also spoke of the special blessing there is for just the two or three who gather in his Name. (Matthew 18:20) For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. So this month, or any month, Id like to encourage you to try attending one of our three circles. You dont need to make a commitment to every meeting and you will be welcomed whenever you can come. It is a time of friendship and sharing concerns as well as a biblical lesson. All are welcome but not required to join the discussion. Our Bible Study for this Year is called An Abiding Hope.

Martha Baxter, leader of the Afternoon Circle provided this account for the December meeting of the afternoon circle. Our precious afternoon circle met on the first Tuesday of December in the activity room beside the assisted living chapel of the Fountains Retirement Residence. By one oclock, seven ladies were gathered in a circle to enjoy the good news from the scriptures. Mary Lou Dresser presented several Christmas articles. We were led to decipher the tune The Twelve Days of Christmas and to learn how Christians survive during hardships. The Bible lesson was on the Old Testament rules for honoring a good harvest. In Deuteronomy is listed the people to invite the family, the servants, the Levites, the aliens, the orphans, and the widowsto their Feast of tabernacles, the name given to the fall harvest feast. Had the Pilgrims followed these rules for their feast that thanked God for a good harvest? If you are interested in attending an afternoon circle, please call Marty Baxter, 480-837-3275.

WINTER GATHERING
January 20 at 5:30 pm in our Fellowship Center This is a wonderful opportunity to gather with the other women of the church for a special evening of inspiration and music. Bring a salad to share and expect to have a wonderful time. Our guest speaker will be Martha Sadongei (Kiowa/Tohono Oodham). She is a teaching elder and 1996 graduate of Austin

Presbyterian Theological Seminary. She is active in Native American ministries in Grand Canyon Presbytery and serves Central Presbyterian Church in Phoenix. Her topic is Sacajawea and Pocahontas: Debunking the Myth of Native American Women Come and learn about the stereotypes often used to portray Native American women versus the realities they face. We have invited the women of Fort McDowell to this special evening and hope that some of them attend. It will be a wonderful gathering. AND our own Debbie Fisher will be adding to the program with flute music. There will be an offering taken for 2nd Mile Giving too. The needs are so great and every gift is used to help. Delicious food, the gathering of other women, good music and a great speaker...COME JOIN US. Sign up on Sunday mornings after church.

HOW DO YOU RECOGNIZE A CHRISTIAN?

A Christian can never be raging with hatred, intent on revenge, grim-faced without mercy or forgiveness. No, a Christian will reveal sincerity through and through, throbbing with compassion and love, quick to smile and laugh, and always checking to make sure the spirit of Christ in in him or her. Christ in us is the hope of glory (see Colossians 1:27, NRSV).

Our new study ON THE WAY. . . Nearing Home: Life, Faith, and Finishing Well a book by Billy Graham
Billy Graham begins this fascinating book with this: All my life I was taught how to die as a Christian but no one ever taught me how I ought to live in the years before I die. I wish they had because I am an old man now, and believe me, its not easy. In typically simple, straightforward, yet faithful fashion the 95-year-old Graham then sets out to fill this void, sharing his experience of aging, his expectations for death, and his anticipation of life beyond with eloquent honesty. Growing old has been the greatest surprise of my life, he says. I would have never guessed what God had in store for me, and I know that as I am nearing home, He will not forsake me the last mile of the way. Come join Pastor Bill as we explore the realities of life as we grow older as well as the hope and fulfillment and even joy that can be ours once we learn to look at these years from Gods point of view and discover His strength to sustain us every day. Class runs for 7 Wednesday evenings beginning on Jan. 15th. Join us for a homemade meal and homegrown fellowship from 5:45-6:30 pm and stay for class from 6:30-7:45pm. The Entertainment Concert Series at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church is now selling single ticket for all shows. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! How exciting to start a New Year with added programs, upcoming events, also challenges. Check out what is going on at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Carol Hencz, Elder Church and come and join our spiritual family. from Bible Study, please join us each Sunday, starting January 19th at 10:15 in the Adult Center. We welcome your participation. John Bivens Blessed Beginnings Ministry The former class study for this group has been replaced with our new Intergenerational Service which is being held from 11:15 - 12:15. We are offering Blessed Beginnings Ministry for infants. And a Ministry for preschoolers if families choose not to keep younger ones with them, or if a child needs extra attention. We will always offer more to provide a Christian ministry with children - even the babies. THE WAY On Wednesday evenings, after a GOURMET DINNER by Chef Arlene, Pastor Bill leads the adults to the Bible Study from 6:30 7:45 pm. Sabbath Day Bible Study What we know about God and what we do for God have a way of getting broken apart in our lives. The moment the organic unity of belief and behavior is damaged in any way, we are incapable of living out the full humanity for which we were created. This is the way Eugene H. Peterson introduces the Book of Ephesians in his version of the Bible, The Message. We plan to start a study of Ephesians on Sunday, January 19th continuing for a period of six weeks. As you may know, the Sabbath Day Bible Study is for an hour from 10:15 to 11:15 in the Adult Center. CLAF graciously provides light refreshments to go with coffee. Those participants who would like to attend the casual worship service at 11:15 can certainly be excused from the Bible Study in time to do so. There will be ample opportunity to ask questions, express personal perspectives, and have an open discussion of the scriptures. Ephesians is Pauls letter to the church in Ephesus. It may also have been intended for other churches as well. Ephesus was an important coastal city ranking in importance with Alexandria in Egypt and Antioch in Syria. Ephesians presents a picture of Gods plan and the role and mission of the church and life within it. We will explore how we fit into Gods plan and our role and mission in Fountain Hills. 8) The study will start on January 15th. Come and join us for fine food and fellowship at 5:45 pm. We will be joined by the Elementary Kids and our Teens. We ask for a small donation of $7.00 for dinner. Kids and Teens eat free. The Elementary Kids (Kid Community) meet from 5-6 pm. Their ministry has worship, music, traditions, storytelling, response and small group conversation and activity time. Wednesday Night Live for Teens meet at 6:30 pm. Teens will use a way of being together followed by facilitating a topic/lesson/issue, then a D-group discussion. Included will be a teen adopted community mission of choice, summer camp, variety of socials.

The Main Event Social for Teens is January to kick off the New Year. Coming in 2014: Zombie Apocalypse Survival for Teens. Actually it is part Walking Dead and part survival journal... but it will be fun thinking about lifes most important issues and considering them from a biblical perspective! Questions about coping with pain and suffering, drinking, loving difficult people, temptation to indulge. I am interested in hearing their responses and doing the survival games!

The Environment of our Faith Community
Yes, God has designed us to live and be formed in community. We are to experience Him in ways that many times can only happen in close proximity to each other. FHPC is a beautiful Debby DeBernardi loving and gracing community to create an environment for parents and children to be equipped and discipled; to celebrate God and His faithfulness; to bring worship through both traditions for a childs identity and heart response for deep change. Our love for each other reflects the love we have been given from God. One can tell a lot about a church by the way they care for children, families, elderly and those with special needs. We are in a growing time and although parents are the primary ones to disciple their children, we are here to come along side of them in this holy endeavor. Our baptismal vows echo this! Why would God bring more families until we can offer ministry to and with children and families? Thank you for those who have taken the risk to step into unknown territory to join parents and grand parents in shaping lives of faith. We need more people to do so now. Lets take it to the next level! God is faithful... let us continue to walk with Him, with children and with their families. Opportunities to learn and be formed with children and family available. Commitment to children not to a program required. Ministry done in teams so that you may select a schedule and rotation that works for you. Doing Life With God for Elementary from 10:15 - 11:15 am Sunday mornings began the end of last year! One couple who was to be part of the team sold their house and so are moving. Debs Doodles
Congratulations FHPC! Debby received one of two grants from Presbyterian Youth Workers Association to offer a special time of retreat with youth workers in the Fountain Hills area in 2014. Please be in prayer as she plans and invites others and goes through the reporting process. The PYWA was very excited for the project that included various denominations. They desire to place this project on their website to inspire others in ministry. Baptism Blessings for Summer Jones! Summer will be baptized January 19th. Please come celebrate with her and her family on this glorious Sunday!

Special thanks to all who participated in the Advent Lighting of Candles and Readings. The Live Nativity with Petting Stable was once again a hit. People in the community are now asking if we are bringing the animals and gave great compliments. Even the mobile petting zoo team told people Fountain Hills was their favorite event of the year and that teams all request FHPC because of how well they are received and treated. Thank you church! Mens Fellowship
Mens Fellowship
As most of you already know, the Mens Fellowship at FHPC has always been a rather informal organization. For most of its twelve year existence it has avoided having a formal organization structure. The original goal was to simply have monthly breakfast meetings so men of this church could meet for an hour or two of, well, fellowship. Sometimes we had a pre-planned program and sometimes we would simply eat and sort of wing it insofar as the agenda was concerned. Over the years we did adopt some programs that have become traditional parts of our church life. Most notable of these are the annual Sweethearts Brunch and an annual Worship Service conducted by male members of FHPC. Additionally, Mens Fellowship provided ushers for some Worship Services, crews for periodic campus clean-up days and volunteers to take food donations to Extended Hands Food Bank each week. It also does all the outdoor Christmas decorations on the campus each year. Participation has always been strictly voluntary. Any male, from teenage and up, is welcome to attend our meetings and is encouraged to volunteer to help with any of our projects. We do not maintain membership rolls, but we do maintain a list of those who have participated in some way in the past. We make a special effort to make those people aware of future events. Recently, we came to the conclusion that we should formalize our organization structure to the extent that we at least had a clearly identified leader. So, for the next year, Norm Collins has volunteered to be the Moderator of Mens Fellowship at FHPC. As such, he will be the contact point for Mens Fellowship and he will be responsible to coordinate the staffing, planning and promoting of future events. Obviously, if this is to work out well, Norm will need volunteers to assume the leadership role for specific events/projects. (NOTE: An announcement of some near term future events appears elsewhere in this bulletin) In closing we want to invite all males in FHPC to be a part of this Fellowship. As you consider this, remember, our emphasis is still on Fellowship and we continue to abhor too much organizational structure.

A breakfast will be held in the Fellowship Center at 9:00 a.m. Any male who attends our church is certainly welcome. Bringing a friend from our community would be a wonderful way to reach out to our community. Past participants will be contacted by phone so we can have an estimate of how many will attend. Others wanting to participate should call Norm Collins at 480-860-1273. We would love to see some new faces. Following breakfast there will be a very short meeting and then we will take down the Campus Christmas decorations.

These two gentlemen have successfully collaborated on previous all Mens Fellowship Sundays and we fully expect this one to measure up to their normal standards.

The Annual Sweethearts Brunch will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Center on this date. Specific information on ticket sales and pricing will be provided in weekly worship services bulletins in January. This is probably the biggest social event of the year by the Mens Fellowship, for FHPC. It would behoove all you men to keep this date in mind and to make sure you dont disappoint your Sweetheart.

Mens Bible Study

Start the New Year off right! Come and join other men of FHPC in Bible Study on January 9th at 7:00 a.m. in the Adult Center. We enjoy coffee and donuts, fellowship, and trust in God and each other. Our sessions only last an hour so you can have a full day doing whatever you wish after a meaningful Kickoff. You will be missing out if you dont take advantage of this opportunity. Fill a jar Need a new tradition to begin the new year? One way to reflect on your blessings as the days and months pass is to fill a Blessing Jar. Simply find a container (ideally with a lid) and place it in a prominent place in your home. Next to it, set slips of paper and writing utensils. Encourage each family member to jot down one thing theyre grateful for every day. If you have a large family, you may need one jar per person. You can also use different-colored paper slips for each family member. Every week, sit down together and review the many ways God is present in your lives.

Music Ministry
Happy New Year from the Music Ministry staff, the Celebration Singers, Celebration Ringers, Committed, Celebration Youth, Pearwood Recorders and Hilltop! We have lots to present this new season, and I look forward to all we can offer toward enhancing the worship experience of this Debbie Fisher, Director of Music church. I certainly want to thank all of those involved in the Music Ministry for their fine achievement in putting forth such a great quality of music this past Christmas Season. To be able to move the choir into the direction of greater choral works has been such a wonderful experience. There are so many fine musicians within our ministry, Singers and Ringers and instrumentalists, alike. It's a privilege to work with them. I'd also like to thank our team of ladies who took on the project of selecting the scarf colors, fabric, and design, along with coordinating the tie colors for the men, which dresses our choir in an elegant style for special presentations. Helen Quigley, Susan Phillips and Arlene Olsen all scouted the fabric stores and narrowed down the choices, and with the choir's choice of fabric and color, gave the material to Violet Weider, who did the seamstress work. They turned out beautifully! Working with the Youth for the Christmas Pageant during the Family Christmas Eve Service was great! The whole service of musicians was put on by the youth of our church. They are becoming such fine musicians! The event of a pageant during Christmas Eve dates back through many generations, and I think the experience is one which was enjoyed by our children, and the children who came to visit, as well as the congregation who were able to delight in the presentation. I hope to continue this as a new tradition in our church. It works so well for their young spirits to participate and contribute to the experience in worship. Our Second Service, "Home By Another Way" also offered a wonderful Christmas experience with a lessons and carol style presenting some of the newer Christmas Songs along side traditional Christmas Hymns, accompanied by Christmas Scripture and Christmas Readings. We are fortunate to have the musicians of Hilltop creating the kind of professional sound that works so well when creating the kind of atmosphere necessary within a service which offers such a unique and enriching experience worship style for all those who attend. Now, let's look forward to the entertainment developing for the Jan. 12 celebration of our Church's 40th year. Wow! I know the entertainment will be fun, unique and somewhat presentable, with singing, poetry reading, fiddle playing, banjo picking, jug blowing, and the like, all for your entertainment pleasure. It's sure to be a year of wholehearted appreciation for those who have built, and continue to build this wonderful house of worship, that we might come together to create an environment of praise and thanksgiving for the One who created and continues to transform us all.

One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: To live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.

Member Spotlight . Did you know?

Earl and Ann Stavely
Ann was born in Minneapolis, MN and grew up with one sister that was three years older. Ann said that her sister was a role model for her. Earl was born in State College, PA. He had two brothers. Earl feels his greatest accomplishment was becoming an Eagle Scout and two of their three sons also became Eagle Scouts. Earl and Ann met on a blind date and have been married for 68 years. Anns only advice to young couples on having a long marriage is Patience! Earl was an engineer and worked for G.E. for 32 years until retirement. Ann worked for five years as an assistant engineer with G.E. in Schenectady , N.Y. and quit to become a stay-at-home mother The reason they retired to Fountain Hills was because Earl had business connections here while working for G.E. They moved to Fountain Hills in 1973 and have been members of Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church since its formation. The members met in several places until the actual church was built. Yes!! Members for 40 years! They were Presbyterians before moving here, so joining this church was not a hard decision for them. When asked what they liked about our church, Earl felt our best feature was the informality and Ann felt that the sermons were meaningful and the congregation is friendly. They wont admit to doing any crazy or silly things in their life. Earl feels the best advice ever given to him was , Be true to yourself. Earl also said that he feels his father had the most impact on his life. And, both of them feel they had a positive influence on their sons. And they stated that Being honest is the best advice they would offer someone today.
