Tips on night driving

To improve your view as far as possible, keep your lights and windscreen clean. Use main beam, but when other drivers are approaching make sure you dip your lights to avoid dazzling the oncoming traffic. Make sure you can stop safely within the distance you can see to be clear. If youre feeling tired, caffeine alone is not a fix. Take a break and have a 20 minute nap. If an approaching car forgets to dip its lights, look beyond the lights, but to their left to avoid being dazzled as much. Look at how the traffic ahead behaves for clues to possible problems you cant see yet. If its gloomy in the morning, dont forget to put your lights on

Avoiding Whiplash
Plan ahead: keep a reflective jacket, warm waterproof clothes and a torch in your car. Put the number of your breakdown company and your membership number in your phone. Some breakdown services offer free mobile phone apps, often even if you are not a member. Use the phones GPS system to find your precise location. Get out of the vehicle by the left-hand door and make sure all your passengers do the same. If you have a high-viz jacket, put it on and make sure everyone is standing well away from moving traffic. If there is a safety barrier, wait behind it. Where possible, coast to an emergency telephone. If you use your mobile phone, you may be asked to give the number on the nearest marker post, located every 100 meters or on a square blue sign every 500 metres. Dont attempt a repair on the hard shoulder of a motorway, call yo ur breakdown company. If you feel threatened by someone, get in the passenger seat, lock the door and dial 999. Be safe and be patient while you wait for help to arrive.

After a car accident

If you have the option, stop where it is safe. Turn the engine off and put your hazard lights on (if appropriate). Keep yourself safe and check others are too. If you need the emergency services, call 999. Stay calm. You must swap some details with the other driver(s). Unless that isnt possible due to injury or because they drive off. If you dont, you must report the accident to the police within 24 hours. Give your name, address, and registration number and the name and address of the owner of the vehicle. You should get these details from the other driver(s). If someone is injured, ensure you exchange insurance details. Report the incident to your insurance company as soon as you can. Get any witness contact details and take photos of the scene and vehicle damage. Note carefully how many people are in the other vehicle.

Long car journeys

Plan your journey to include a stop at least once every two hours. If you feel drowsy, stop at the next motorway service area and walk around. If you are tired, you cannot ignore its effects. Where possible, share the driving with another driver. Make sure you drink enough fluids.

Dont plan to travel late at night if you can avoid it. The overnight hours are particularly hard if you are tired. Dont ignore warning signs of fatigue. In extreme cases, have a caffeine drink and sleep for 20 minutes while it takes effect. You can only do this once in a journey; it wont have the same effect if you do it more than once.

Parking tips
Park on the left-hand side of the road if possible, and always at night. In a car park, try and reverse into parking spaces. Its safer when youre driving out and more fuel efficient as youll be manoeuvring with a warm engine. Check your mirrors and over your shoulder frequently you need to know whats going on around you. Dont just rely on parking sensors. When looking for a parking space, dont stop suddenly. Drive slowly past it and size it up to see if your car will fit. And if you cant stop because you have traffic behind you, drive on. Dont stop suddenly. At the supermarket, try and park away from trolley parks and corners to avoid your car being damaged by trolleys. Leave enough space for a large vehicle to pass your vehicle and for pedestrians to get past easily.

Driving Attire
Proper shoes for driving play a BIG part in driving safety. Yet there are a lot of people who drive with thick-soled shoes, high heels or sandals or no shoes at all ! Using footwear not suitable for driving may cause accidents on the road. The choice of footwear for driving must allow the foot to feel the pressure needed by the pedals to achieve the desired braking or acceleration. Shoes with soles of over 10 mm or clogs with hard heels are unsuitable for driving due to the extremely hard bottoms of these types of footwear that obstruct the feeling required by the feet to operate the pedals properly. Both accelerator and brake pedals are worked with the heel on the floor. Wearing high-heeled shoes will be a problem since the heel is elevated and the operation of the pedals is hampered because of this. In the other end of the spectrum, driving barefoot - although providing the maximum feel of the pedals - might result in injury on the feet. In cases of traffic accidents with nothing to protect the feet, one might tread on broken glass and sustain major injuries. Slight pain in the foot might hinder stepping hard on the brakes in case of emergency. So what's the best footwear to use while driving ? But there is no need to buy another pair, you may already have one that will do just fine. Here are some features you can look for in the shoes you already have to check if they will do: For these considerations, your basic trainer shoes ( not the thick soled type) or plain flat shoes is best suited for driving. Not only do these provide enough feeling on the feet, these are also hard and thick enough to help you give the exact pressure needed for braking and acceleration. Most importantly, these types of shoes are comfortable enough for long driving.

When the left hand side of your front bumper lines up with the right hand side of the front car's rear bumper turn your steering wheel smartly to your right or away from the kerb 6. The car will now begin to straighten up in the parking bay. As soon as it is parallel with the kerb, stop. Ideally you should aim at getting your wheels 0.3m from the kerb.

7 Your front wheels can be left turned outwards to the road. However, it may be necessary for you to drive forward slightly in order to place it in the centre of your bay.

Check your mirrors-look over your right shoulder to check your blind spot. 7. If necessary, give your correct signal before moving off. 8. Release the park brake very smoothly. At the same time, push the accelerator down a little more and let the clutch pedal come up very slowly. 9. The car will begin to move forward gently and more gas can be applied as necessary. Let the clutch pedal come right up smoothly. 10. Do not attempt to change second gear too early after starting off on an upgrade.
