Adding a Disk-Array Enclosure

To determine the AC/DC power consumption and requirements for a system upgrade, you can use the Power Calculator for your system type, available on the EMC Powerlink website (http://Powerlink.EMC.com). To add a disk-array enclosure (DAE) to a storage system, you must use the Disk-Array Enclosure Installation wizard as described in this guide. This wizard determines if you can add a disk-array enclosure to your storage system, and if you can, it recommends a bus and enclosure address for the enclosure and tells you how to install and cable the enclosure. The Disk-Array Enclosure Installation wizard is part of the Unisphere Service Manager (USM), which replaces the Navisphere Service Taskbar (NST). The USM is available from the Powerlink website (http://Powerlink.EMC.com) on the CLARiiON Tools page for the storage-system type. If you are not running the latest version of the USM, we recommend that you download and install the latest version as described in this document. Before you start

The Unisphere Service Manager (USM) must run on a Windows host that is: Running a supported operating system version. For supported versions, refer to the EMC Unisphere Service Manager Release Notes. Connected to the Internet and able to communicate with the management ports on your storage system. Running Java Runtime Environment (JRE). For supported versions, refer to the EMC Unisphere Service Manager Release Notes. If you do not install the correct version prior to downloading USM, the USM setup wizard gives you the option of installing it for you.

Handling field replaceable units (FRUs)

This section describes the precautions that you must take and the general procedures you must follow when removing, installing, and storing any field replaceable unit (FRU).

Power issues and FRUs

Your storage system is designed to be powered on continuously. Most components are hot swappable; that is, you can replace or install these components while the storage system is running. Front bezels should always be attached and each compartment should contain a FRU or filler panel to ensure EMI compliance and proper air flow over the FRUs. You should not remove a faulty FRU until you have a replacement available. When you replace or install FRUs, you can inadvertently damage the sensitive electronic circuits in the equipment by simply touching them. Electrostatic charge (ESD) that has accumulated on your body discharges through the circuits. If the air in the work area is very dry, running a humidifier in the work area will help decrease the risk of ESD damage. Follow the procedures below to prevent damage to the equipment. Read and understand the following instructions: Provide enough room to work on the equipment. Clear the work site of any unnecessary materials or materials that naturally build up electrostatic charge, such as foam packaging, foam cups, cellophane wrappers, and similar items. Do not remove replacement or upgrade FRUs from their antistatic packaging until you are ready to install them. Before you service a storage system, gather together the ESD kit and all other materials you will need. Once servicing begins, avoid moving away from the work site; otherwise, you may build up an electrostatic charge. An ESD wristband is supplied with your storage system. To use it, attach the clip of the ESD wristband (strap) to any bare (unpainted) metal on the storage system; then put the wristband around your wrist with the metal button against your skin.

Use the ESD kit when handling any FRU. If an emergency arises and the ESD kit is not available, follow the procedures in the Emergency procedures (without an ESD kit) section.

Emergency procedures (without an ESD kit)

In an emergency when an ESD kit is not available, use the following procedures to reduce the possibility of an electrostatic discharge by ensuring that your body and the subassembly are at the same electrostatic potential. These procedures are not a substitute for the use of an ESD kit. Follow them only in the event of an emergency. Before touching any FRU, touch a bare (unpainted) metal surface of the cabinet or storage system. Before removing any FRU from its antistatic bag, place one hand firmly on a bare metal surface of the storage system, and at the same time, pick up the FRU while it is still sealed in the antistatic bag. Once you have done this, do not move around the room or touch other furnishings, personnel, or surfaces until you have installed the FRU. When you remove a FRU from the antistatic bag, avoid touching any electronic components and circuits on it. If you must move around the room or touch other surfaces before installing a FRU, first place the FRU back in the antistatic bag. When you are ready again to install the FRU, repeat these procedures.

Downloading and installing the Unisphere Service Manager

The Unisphere Service Manager (USM) replaces the Navisphere Service Taskbar (NST). If you are not running the latest version of USM, we recommend you download and install the latest version as described below.

1. From the Powerlink website, select Support > Product and Diagnostic Tools > CLARiiON Tools > About Unisphere Service Manager 2. On the About Unisphere Service Manager page, select the Unisphere Service Manager link and select the option to save the software to your host or management station. 3. In the folder where you saved the USM, double-click the executable (.exe) file, and if necessary, click Run to start the installation wizard. 4. Follow the instructions that appear. After you accept the license agreement, the wizard verifies that the server is running the supported Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version. If the server is running an earlier version of the JRE, select Yes when asked if you want to continue with the installation. The installation wizard prompts you to download and install the later version of the JRE from the Sun website. If the server is running a later version of the JRE, the installation wizard asks if you want to continue with the installation. Select Yes to continue or No to quit the installation.
Important: If you select Yes, the USM may not work properly with a later JRE version. If you select No, and manually remove the later version of the JRE, other applications that require this version may not work properly.

5. When the installation is complete, click Done.

Running the Disk-Array Enclosure Installation wizard

1. Start the Unisphere Service Manager by doing either one of the following: Click the Unisphere Service Manager icon on your desktop, or Select Start > All Programs or Start > Programs, then select EMC > Unisphere > Unisphere Service Manager > Unisphere Service Manager.

2. Log in to your system. 3. From the System screen, select Hardware > Hardware Installation > Install Disk Array Enclosure. 4. Follow the instructions that appear, and be sure to click View Instructions on the Installation Instructions page. 5. If you are told to use the Back-end Bus Speed Reset Wizard in Navisphere Manager: a. Before continuing, stop all I/O to the storage system because the wizard reboots both SPs. b. In Manager, from the Tools menu, select Service > Back-end Bus Speed Reset Wizard to start the wizard. c. Follow the instructions to change the back-end bus speed.

Verifying the operation of the new disk or DAE with Navisphere Manager
1. In a browser window, start Navisphere Manager for the storage system by entering the IP address of one SP in the storage system. 2. In the Navisphere Manager Storage tree, locate the icon for the storage system in which you installed the new disk or new DAE, expand the storage-system icon, and select the Physical icon. 3. Expand the enclosure in which you installed the new disk or expand the new DAE. 4. Verify that the new disk or new DAE and the disks that the new DAE contains appear and are not faulted. If you added a new 2 Gb disk or a new 2Gb DAE to a CX4 series storage system and the new disk or disks in the new DAE do appear, then repeat step 1 with the IP address of the other SP in the storage system, and then repeat steps 2 through 4. If the new disk or disks in the new DAE appear, then the new disk or the disks in the new DAE are available for use. If the new disk or disks in the new DAE do not appear in either case: a. From a browser, open the setup page for one SP: http://sp_ip_address/setup where sp_ip_address is the IP address of the SP. b. Scroll down to the Refresh Management Server State option, and click Refresh Management Server State. c. In the confirmation page, select Yes and Submit. d. Repeat steps a through c for the other SP. e. After refreshing the management server state for both SPs, verify that the new disk or disks in the new DAE appear in the Navisphere Manager physical tree when you start Navisphere Manager for one SP, and then the other SP. When the SPs appear in both cases, they are available for use.
