RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Name of School : SK SERI IDAMAN, PARIT YAANI, BATU PAHAT

Name of researcher: SHARMINI A/P T.THAMBIDORAI
Research topic : EXTENSIVE READING AND LANGUAGE
PROFICIENCY

1. Reflection

While carrying out the SBOA, pupils do not read enough and this adversely affect
the ability to speak well and write well. Oral skill is equally hampered due to lack of
reading skills. A random survey by the show of hands revealed that those who performed
better in tests or examinations were also those who had read more than others.
.

2. Research focus

I realize that pupils tend to rely on their text book to improve their vocabulary and
language proficiency. .I therefore would like to teach students to see the importance of
reading extensively to improve their language proficiency. I would like to show them
how relevant and important reading is to successful living. We can kick-start their love
for the written words, and hopefully with this established they might develop the other
skills necessary for language mastery.

3. Research objective

The objectives of the study are as follows:

i. General Objectives
To improve pupils language proficiency.

ii. Specific Objective

• To enable pupils to read extensively varied materials in print as well as in other
forms including electronic and be able to talk what they have read.
• Focus will be more on the ability to communicate ideas (information) rather than
on language accuracy.
• To help pupils sustain their interest in reading so as to widen their vocabulary and
knowledge base.
• It is hoped that with reading, students will develop better writing and speaking
skills for more effective communication purposes.

4. Population and sample

This research involves 22, year 6 pupils.

5. Research Proposal

i. My focus was on extensive reading and its effects on other language skills. Also, the extent of
students’ reading (comprehension) was reflected in the how well they were able to talk about it. I
have gathered information on students’ participation in the experiment as well as their responses
(reflections) to it. For these purposes 3 research instruments will be used:

i. Pupils’ Reading Log

ii. Reader’s Survey
iii. Pupils’ Questionnaire

6. Method : “What Have I Read About Today?”

I am going to use a simple 5-minute programme at the beginning of each English lesson.

i. Based on a poster “What Have I Read About Today?” I ask

pupils to talk about what they have read in the past week.
ii. This is done in the first five minutes of the first lesson of the week.
iii. 2 - 3 volunteers shall have the chance to share.
iv. New volunteers will share week each.
v. Focus is on content rather than language accuracy
vi. pupils are encouraged to share their reading experience
(reflections) rather than “telling” the audience what they have read.
vii. Each pupil is given a “scaffolding” as a guide to their reading
and later, to talk in class about what they have
read.
