Application of statistics to biological systems Introduction and brief history, average, mean, mode, median, variation and standard deviation and examples for problem solving. Experimental designs Principles and types of experimental designs, comparison of different designs, replication, randomization, control and tests of significance (students t test, F test, chi square test and ANOVA). Biometrics Introduction and brief history, biometric techniques used in crop improvement; biometrics in relation to biosciences. Major contributions of famous statisticians/biometricians. Polygenic variation Introduction, polygenic characters, type of polygenic variation, source of variability, difference between qualitative and quantitative traits, loss of variability, features of polygenic traits, assessment of variation, some definitions and technical terms for application of biometrics.
