The Cube

According to psychologist’s points of view, the human being is one of the most
controversial and exciting themes, from which socialists can take a lot of material to discuss.
Some film directors are interested in creating stories using these themes. That is why, I choose
“The Cube” film as one of my favorite ones; since it drives us to a reflection path to uncover
different human behaviors related to life.

First of all, every human being has different talents within each other. These talents
might be natural. That is, people are born with one or more talents. An example could be a
mental sick teenager who cannot keep in a habitual conversation, but, can figure out extremely
difficult math codes. On the other hand, there are people who are able to relate their aptitudes
on their professional lives. That is the case of a psychologist woman who shows her ability of
easily understands anyone to discover how to solve their unfavorable situations. The third case,
involves people who develop some abilities along their life, giving as a result, people with
fabulous talents. Their characteristic is that their talents are latent, but it is broken out at
unknown specific situations.

In the second place, it is important to point out how life plays a unique value within
human mind. One thing is to live, and another, the precious place people give life. In the
already mentioned film, characters uncovered an opposite personality they used to show in
emergency situations. For example, the sweety and protectable policeman became a psycho
killer when he noticed his life was in danger. Similar but different, people long for their life at
every moment. So if they discover they can lose their life, they do anything possible to keep it.
That is the case of the noisy boy who made everything to maintain himself quite in order to
survive to a life-death situation. Other cases talking about typical behaviors, are the ‘ego’ ones.
Here, people just think of themselves. All their decisions are based on their security; and in
panic situations, they might forget family and loved relationships.

Lastly, symbolism resource became a key for developing in an original way this confused
theme. Scenery was the theme base of this picture. The title of the movie: The Cube does not
represent an ordinary rectangular geometric form at all, but it symbolizes how life is given to us
as a rectangle and it depends on each one to give it the form as we desire. In the same way,
colors represent different personalities, style life, and emotions. It is easy to analyze each
character by simply looking at his clothing; but in this film, the director used neutral colors to
project neutral spaces in order no to influence characters at react when facing adverse
situations. Finally, every face cube represents a footpath opportunity life. Every day we have to
make decisions; these decisions are opportunities to mold our life. The results might be different
but they will depend on our decisions. That is the way the film show us the importance that
characters have when they decide to open one cube face.

To sum up, “The Cube” is one of my favorite films because it shows in a creative way, an
enriching human being and life theme reflection. The topic might figure as a simple game in a
strange place; but is a complex matter with a pinch of fantasy represented by signs, where
audience identify their self at strange behavior changes, multifaceted reactions, and life value
interests because are compounds natural human characteristics. In spite of drive a well-worn
matter, also, the detail that makes it different and singular from any other film, is the way the
director used symbols at the film for the principal premise, which might appear a little
controversial and sick, but is the reality of our human nature and all of us are part of it.
