SETTING A NEW RECORD

December 28, 2013

A longstanding record from a different era

As this season began for the Germantown boys basketball team, the Warhawks were on the verge of breaking a consecutive wins record a record that was set during a different era for Wisconsin high school sports. Looked at another way, they were on the verge of breaking two records. Public and private high schools played under separate sanctioning bodies until 2000, when schools in the Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association (WISAA) were brought into the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA). Prior to that time, there were separate championships for public and private schools. The consecutive winning streak record for public schools was 60, set by Milwaukee Lincoln from 1960-63. The overall record of 63 wins was set by Dominican High School from 1977-80. As the 2011-12 season began for Germantown, the Warhawks came off a 24-2 record, with the last loss coming in a dubious manner. At a March 15, 2011 Super Tuesday game at the UW-Oshkosh Kolf Center, Germantown and Appleton East were tied at 52-52 in the closing seconds following a missed free throw. A rebound off the missed free throw was first ruled to have been recovered by Germantown, with Germantown calling a time out with 3.8 seconds remaining. But the call was reversed, giving possession to East. On the ensuing inbounds play, a missed shot was then put back in by East for a 54-52 win, though video replay showed the game clock did not start on time. When the ball (the first shot) was in the air, it seems like the horn should have sounded. But I cant fix it, Germantown Coach Steve Showalter told reporters afterward. You play until the whistle blows, you play until the horn blows. Weve got to get that rebound. Germantown has not lost since. The Warhawks passed

the Milwaukee Lincoln record with an 88-42 win at Cedarburg Dec. 13. Germantown then broke the all-time record with a 90-63 win over Milwaukee Lutheran Dec. 17. Following Germantowns win over Milwaukee Lutheran, Showalter was asked if he remembered the last loss. I do remember it, I remember it way too well. Thats part of the reason why we keep trying to push this thing, Showalter said. That thing has netted Germantown two state championships along with a breaking records that were more than three decades old. While happy with the record, Showalter stayed focused on the next games ahead. Its a sense of relief with that number, but weve got a lot of work to do yet, he said. In the two games since, Germantown continued to win, adding to a streak that is more than two years old. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

A historic evening: Germantown sets all-time consecutive wins record

Few regular season high school basketball games were as special as the one won by the Germantown boys basketball team Dec. 17. The Warhawks broke the Wisconsin high school record for most consecutive wins that evening, defeating Milwaukee Lutheran 90-63. The game was the 63rd consecutive win for Germantown, a streak which started with a 73-58 win over Brookfield Central Nov. 29,2011. Germantown broke the record set by Whitefish Bay Dominican from 1977-80. Dominican set the record in the WISAA, which was the sanctioning body for private school competition at the time (WISAA schools were brought into the WIAA fold in 2000-01 school year) . Earlier this season, Germantown broke the previous public school record of 60 games set by Milwaukee Lincoln from 1960-63. Germantown tied the record with a 7529 rout of Dominican at the NY2LA classic Dec. 14. After setting the record, Germantown Coach Steve Showalter spoke to the Germantown fans. "This is kind of a nice break in December (and) we're going to try to keep this going," he said. "We're not all about wins, we're not all about win streaks. We're all about good kids and doing things the right way, and good people. We've had good people here for a lot of years." Showalter added that the record "is not just a tribute to this team and these boys here, this is a tribute to all the kids that have busted their rear ends here in this gym for us and all the kids that got this thing started and made it a lot easier on some of rest of these guys. They've done a great job and we hope to keep making you guys proud and making you guys happy and keep this thing going." Afterward, Showalter noted that his sons Zak and Jake have been part of the program and it has been "a family thing." "All these things have been family," Showalter said. Showalter, who became Germantown coach during the 2000-01 season, told media his team set the bar" with deep runs in the sectional bracket starting in 2006-07 followed by a few state tournament appearances. "We've had wonderful kids and wonderful players all the way through," Showalter said, mentioning Ben Averkamp, Josh Mongan, Dan Studer and Luke Fischer along with players on this year's team. "I could name 50 guys that mean so much to this program and really helped build this thing," Showalter said. He also mentioned the work of his assistant coaches throughout the years. Several former players were in attendance at the game. "It's a great accomplishment, it started with us," said Zack Kumbier, who was part of Germantown's first state title team in the 2011-12 season. "Like Coach said, it's a great group of guys and we did it the right

But Luke Fischer returned and turned in a season-long performance that earned him the states Mr. Basketball title. Jake Showalter and Lamonte Bearden became starters, with each having key performances throughout the season. Among the victories this season was a win against eventual Division 4 champion Dominican. Germantown again faced a tough De Pere team in the sectional final, and came out on top. way." He added that "even in life, (the goal is) be the best you can be. And I feel as a program we've done that. Tyler Heaney, who also played on the 2011-12 team, said the event "is a memorable thing, you had to be here to continue this. We were part of the tradition and we want to see it keep going and keep winning and keep going with the streak." Heaney said the lesson from the streak is "practicing hard every day. Coming to work hard and playing as a team." Heaney's comment was echoed by Lamonte Bearden, a senior on this years team. "We just came and worked harder each day and Coach told us that we can get better each day. We just have to work on everything in practice and get better, " Bearden said. Center Evan Wesenberg also cited the work done at practice and noted that players play in summer leagues and on AAU teams during the offseason. "We definitely know each one of our strengths and weaknesses so we play to our advantage," Wesenberg said. "We have a good team chemistry." Bearden said the team was focused on the task of winning the game before them while not talking about the record as much. "It's just another game and then we

"When you win a championship you're done for the year and you go home and celebrate," Showalter said. "Well, tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. we're going to be in here trying to get better. There's a sense of relief with that number (breaking the consecutive winning streak record), but we've got a lot of work to do yet. We've got to get busy." Germantown continued to add onto the streak later in the week. The Warhawks topped Grafton 73-50 Dec. 20, as Jake Showalter led Germantown with 25 points. The next evening, at the Al McGuire Classic, Germantown scored the first seven points of the game and followed that with a 23-4 run in the second quarter to win 6844. Following the win over Pius, Germantowns streak winning streak was extended to 65 games. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

SETTING A NEW RECORD

December 28, 2013

DEDICATED TO THE GERMANTOWN 2012/2013 BASKETBALL TEAMS, COACHES AND PARENTS

We believe . . . Whatever is worth doing at all . . . is worth doing well. The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra. Those who say it cant be done are usually interrupted by those doing it. Tough times dont last, tough teams do. When trust and skill work together we can expect a masterpiece. Thank you for

BELIEVING YOU COULD DO IT.

We believe . . . Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishment toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results. Thank you for your TEAMWORK. We believe . . . The character of any team is reflected in the standards it sets for itself. When a team of dedicated individuals makes a commitment to act as one . . . the skys the limit to what can be accomplished. Thank you for

going ABOVE & BEYOND.

We believe . . . Greatness is not where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it but sail we must, and not drift, nor lie at anchor. Thank you for MAKING IT

HAPPEN.
We believe . . . Go over, go under, go around, or go through. But never give up. Thank you for NEVER GIVING

UP.
We believe . . . People dont care how much we know until they know how much we care. Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow. Thank you for the

ACHIEVEMENT.
We believe . . . Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it . . . autograph your work with excellence. Excellence is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skillful execution and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities. Thank you for your EXCELLENCE. We believe . . . True leaders are not those who strive to be first but those who are first to strive and who give their all for the success of the team. True leaders are first to see the need, envision the plan, and empower the team for action. By the strength of the leaders commitment, the power of the team is unleashed. Thank you

for being LEADERS.

We believe . . . A leaders job is to look into the future, and to see the organization not as it is . . . but as it can become. Thank you for your VISION. We believe . . . Some people dream of success . . . while others wake up and work hard at it. Refuse to accept anything but the very best and you will very often get it. Thank you for the very best SUCCESS. We believe . . . . . . YOU ARE THE BEST!!! CONGRATULATIONS, Ben and Terri Lodwick, owners
