By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Whether hes a Bulldawg or a
Bear, Brown University standout
swimmer and Haddonfield Me-
morial High School alum Tommy
Glenn moves like a fish in the
water. With an impressive resume
already under his belt, Glenn is
poised to have his best season yet.
The success Ive seen and the
team has seen is a tangible culmi-
nation of the rest of my career at
Brown since I was a freshman,
Glenn said. The team has gotten
faster every year, and the work
Ive put in each year has put me
in this position.
In his first Ivy League Champi-
onship meet in 2011, Glenn placed
second in the 200 butterfly on the
way to an NCAA B cut, scored in
the 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle
and was a member of the 400
medley, 800 freestyle and 400
freestyle relays. Not bad for some-

4 THE HADDONFIELD SUN
briefs
Submit your family
photos for celebration
The Haddonfield Tricentennial
Committee and Haddonfield
Civic Association are asking all
Haddonfield residents to submit a
photograph of their families in
front of their homes, with the
family in the foreground and the
home in the background, to me-
morialize life in Haddonfield in
2013. One hundred of the 4,600
Haddonfield households have
submitted photos so far, and the
deadline has been extended to
Jan. 15, to accommodate families
who were not together until late
December.
We want to capture the people
and places that made Haddonfield
what it is in 2013, and preserve
this snapshot of time for future
generations, said Maureen
Eyles, executive director of Had-
donfields Tricentennial. Along
with the photo, we want to record
the family names and address of
the home.
To view the instructions for
submitting digital or printed pho-
tographs, please visit www.had-
donfield300.org/photo.
Digital and printed photo-
graphs will be collected for publi-
cation in a town-wide photo
album, which will be donated to
the Historical Society of Haddon-
fields archives for future genera-
tions to view and enjoy.
I have enjoyed seeing the re-
cent submissions of families in
the snow. In 100 years, I think peo-
ple will enjoy seeing the people
who lived in their homes, how
they decorated during the holi-
days, and even what they wore.
This is a great memorial, Eyles
said.

Dangers of wood smoke
topic of Jan. 14 EMD meeting
The holidays are past, and youre think-
ing of curling up with that new book by the
cozy wood fire. Wait! Did you know this
could be bad for your health and the envi-
ronment?
At the Evening Membership Depart-
ments Jan. 14 meeting, Walter Delengows-
ki will speak on the dangers of residential
wood smoke. Wood smoke emits fine par-
ticulate matter and polycyclic aromatic hy-
drocarbons, which pose a significant
health risk, and are the largest source of
PM2.5 in the states area source emission
inventory.
Residential wood burning accounted for
9,363 tons per year of fine particulate mat-
ter in New Jersey in 2002.
Delengowskis presentation will show
you the health risk to you and your loved
ones from breathing wood smoke. Most ref-
erences will be from the U.S. Department of
Environmental Protection Agency.
The meeting will be held at the Haddon
Fortnightly, on the corner of Kings High-
way and Grove Street. Delengowski will
speak at 7:45, before the regular business
meeting. Refreshments will be served fol-
lowing the meeting.

T
he ball has dropped. The new
year is here. Resolutions have
been made, and hardly any
have been broken so far. Were all back
to work, for full, five-day weeks. Life is
back to normal.
You may be in settle-down mode
following the holidays, but there is so
much to look forward to in 2014. To wit:
Cold weather...and lots of snow?
OK, so maybe this isnt your cup of tea,
but the kids in the community are sure
to get fired up about this. The new year
rang in with blisteringly cold, winter
weather. Will there be more in store? If
so, how will it affect traffic, business,
school and our mood?
Speaking of weather potentially
disrupting our lives...the Super Bowl is
coming to New Jersey next month! The
Farmers Almanac is predicting pretty
lousy weather for the Sunday, Feb. 2
game. Wonder if the NFL will regret
its decision to host the game in a cold-
weather city with a non-enclosed field?
Online gambling will be in full
force. At the end of November 2013, on-
line gambling was rolled out to New
Jerseyans, with casinos offering every-
thing from online slots to craps to
poker. Registered accounts eclipsed the
125,000 mark at the end of December,
with numbers rising sharply each
week. How high will it go? How suc-
cessful will it be for the casinos? What
impact will it have on our economy?
President Obamas health-care law
is in (relatively) full effect. Some line
items are still to be phased in, but
major initiatives such as the public
health-care exchange are here. The
time has come for the real assessments
to begin.
New Jerseys minimum wage in-
creased by $1 to $8.25 per hour on Jan.
1. Some think itll help workers; others
think it will hurt business. What will
come of it?
As is the case each year, local issues
such as school and municipal budgets
and elections will be hot topics. And, as
always, well be right there along for
the ride, keeping you informed on
every tidbit of information.
Heres to a prosperous 2014!

BRIEFS
JANUARY 8-14, 2014 THE HADDONFIELD SUN 7

Join me in making
a commitment to a
more sustainable
Camden County as
our New Years reso-
lution.
After every holiday
season residents up-
grade and replace
many of their elec-
tronics. From new
televisions to computers, many
products that used to be solid
waste are now E-waste and can no
longer be put curbside to be picked
up on trash day. In light of this
buildup, the Freeholder Board will
be providing free E-waste disposal
throughout the week and on some
weekends.
To make E-waste recycling more
convenient than ever before, Cam-
den County residents can drop off
their unwanted and traded elec-
tronics at the Camden County Pol-
lution Control Financing
Authority (PCFA) facility in
Pennsauken Township every busi-
ness day. Best of all, its free of
charge to county residents.
The E-waste is accepted at the
Pennsauken Sanitary Landfill, lo-
cated at 9600 River Road in
Pennsauken Township, during the
PCFAs normal business hours:
Monday through Friday from 7:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A special Saturday
session will take place on Jan. 18
from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Another Sat-
urday session will take place on
Feb. 15 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for
those of you getting new televi-
sions for your Super Bowl party.
In addition to E-waste recycling,
there are several other after-holi-
days tips that can make your
household greener and reduce
your familys carbon footprint.
Consider donating your familys
unwanted clothing or toys that
your kids haven outgrown to a
charitable organization rather
than throwing these items in the
trash.
Wrapping paper
can be placed with
your paper recycling
unless it is wax-
coated or made of
foil. Other paper
goods accumulated
around the house
during the holidays
can also be recycled
using the same
guidelines. Next year, look for
cards and wrapping paper that can
be recycled or are made from post-
consumer recycled material, or
use old maps or the Sunday comics
as gift wrap instead. Save your rib-
bon and bows and large pieces of
wrapping paper for use next year.
Remove your name from mail-
ing lists of any catalogues you no
longer wish to receive. Remember
that many of these catalogues are
available to you online. Give envi-
ronmental gifts like reusable tote
bags, lunch bags, travel mugs,
house plants, homemade foods and
handmade items. They are always
appreciated.
To determine the proper way to
dispose of your cut Christmas
tree, please contact your munici-
pality. If you compost, reduce
your tree into smaller sections be-
fore adding it to the pile. As an al-
ternative, consider purchasing a
live tree with a root ball in the fu-
ture so that it can be planted in
your yard and enjoyed for years to
come.
For more information on recy-
cling and the environment, please
contact the Camden County Divi-
sion of Environmental Affairs at
(856) 858-5241.

about sustainability or County
services, please call me at (856) 225-
5563, or email me at

ones first appearance on the big
stage.
That was a big step just com-
peting on that level. Ive been
building on it ever since, Glenn
said.
The next year, Glenn won the
100 and 200 butterfly at the Ivy
League Championship meet,
achieving NCAA B cuts in both
events while also setting Brown
school records. He was named
first team All-Ivy in the 100 and
200 butterfly and was an All-
American Honorable Mention for
his performance in the 200 butter-
fly. As a result, he was named the
2011-2012 NCAA Male Breakout
Swimmer of the Year.
The 2013 season brought more
of the same. Again at the Men's
Ivy League Swimming and Div-
ing Championships, held at
Brown's Katherine Moran Cole-
man Aquatics Center, the eco-
nomics concentrator defended
two Ivy League titles, competed
on three relays for the Bears, set
three school records and turned
in some of the fastest times in the
country. Despite his own success,
Glenn speaks more about goals
for the team.
I was the first person to score
at NCAAs from Brown in more
than 50 years, so for me, the goal
was to bring the team to that
level, Glenn said.
Brown completed its new pool
at the end of Glenns sophomore
season, which he feels put the
team in a position to succeed.
Its a great pool, one of the
best on the east coast. Before that,
we were swimming in a tempo-
rary bubble pool, and the team
was honestly less than motivat-
ed, Glenn said. That facility
pushed our team to another
level.
Though his collegiate career at
Brown ends in the spring, Glenn
took steps over the summer to en-
sure his swimming career is far
from over. He trained at the North
Baltimore Aquatic Club made fa-
mous by some swimmer named
Michael Phelps.
Working with Bob Bowman
(Phelps swim coach) was a great
experience. I had an internship
with Wells Fargo in Maryland
over the summer, so I reached
out to him. I got to train with a
group of 10-15 swimmers, all of
who had competed at the
Olympics or World Champi-
onships, so yeah it was good com-
pany, Glenn said.
Training with Olympians has
not caused Glenn to forget his
roots.
Brown reminds me of HMHS
because its provided a lot of av-
enues for me to explore and a lot
of opportunities, Glenn said.
Haddonfield was a great place to
grow up. The town was good to
me.
